Being absolutely amazing? I was a Mooncup virgin until this month. It's great! I had NO IDEA about the really cool suction thing.

I don't understand why they are not more widely promoted as an envirinmentally and body friendly choice. And surely they, with the appropriate funding, could be a great mentstruation product for women in poverty/crisis situations?

Hello. This thread is a little old now. Take a look at our round-up of Mumsnetters’ favourite menstrual cups - with a handy guide to finding and using the right cup for you - for more up-to-date advice. MNHQ.

I wouldn't rinse it in any sink other than my own.

hollinhurst84 · 02/08/2016 16:08

Happen - nope. I pinch the base and wiggle it until I hear the suction break then sort of rock it out. I end up holding the whole cup upright between two fingers. No mess

Sofabitch · 02/08/2016 16:11

I recently went camping with mine... no sinks anywhere near the toilets. I just took some wipes and a small bottle of water to rinse. A bit more faff than tampons but still totally manageable x

TheDowagerCuntess · 02/08/2016 16:48

Happen, if that were the case, do you think they'd have taken off as a successful product? Grin

HappenstanceMarmite · 02/08/2016 21:18

Well that's why I'm asking Dowager. I can't imagine doing it without ending up looking like one of Jack The Ripper's victims 😳 I'm trying to find out whether I am catastrophising and it really isn't as I'm imagining, or whether it is like that but other people are just less squeamish than me and don't mind a bit of mess.

BigPantyGirl · 02/08/2016 21:29

I can't get on with the mooncup at all, I've bought the larger one but it hurt when inserting/removing it, and so I bought the smaller one but nearly gave myself a hysterectomy removing it. I just seem to have a small vag and the insertion is soooo uncomfortable.
I really want to use one though as my periods are very heavy, I think I'll try the lily cup as a PP has suggested, bit softer apparently...

DeadGood · 02/08/2016 21:42

They are amazing.

The best thing about them is the way that you can almost forget you've got your period. I put it in after showering, then don't think about it all day.

Curls you can and definitely should use them overnight! Only way I don't get blood all over my sheets is by using a mooncup.

The thing people should understand is that we don't work 7 days a week, and our periods are not ultra heavy for 10 days. Say I get my period on a Friday. If I didn't fancy every emptying my mooncup at my place of work, I would

  • use tampons/pads on Friday
  • use my mooncup over the weekend
  • by the time Monday rolled around, I'd be on day 4 of my period and wouldn't need to empty it during work hours

There you go - you've used three tampons for an entire period, as opposed to 30, and none of your colleagues will know a thing.

Regarding no access to a sink. To be honest, in that situation I would empty the cup, hold it upside down (over the loo) for a few seconds, then just re-insert it. I don't see the need for bottles of water (too fiddly) or wiping it with loo roll (seems like a recipe for left-behind fibres inside my vag?!)

Lillagroda · 02/08/2016 21:50

Changed my life. I am quite light so I can wear it for the full 12 hours at a time without needing to empty. No more sitting in loooooong meetings wondering when I can get to the logo and change. Literally forget I am even on.
I sterilise it at the start of each cycle, just in boiling water; it goes in on the morning I am due since you can use it preventatively unlike a tampon, then follow 5 days of zero hassle. No dryness or irritation, and I have a lot less cramping since using it. I use a small Fleur cup, very soft and comfy.

Couldn't be without it now.

amusedbush · 02/08/2016 22:10

I didn't get on with the Mooncup at all. Too big, wide and rigid. I'd be really sore after a few days of removal/insertion and it was so wide that I couldn't even pee with it in as it clamped everything shut Blush

I switched to a soft 'shorty' Meluna cup and it changed my life. I can't even feel it, I don't get cramps anymore and it has actually brought my period down from five days to four.

WiddlinDiddlin · 02/08/2016 22:24

I need to find an alternative to my mooncup as although it is comfy once in, it does stop me peeing properly and after a few days I am a bit sore.

That said I would NEVER go back to tampons or pads though, I think a cup is far more hygienic than fibres up yer floo or sitting on a pad soaked in drying blood.

Really never had an issue with dealing wtih it in public toilets (better now I use the disabled loos, but fine before that) and I am NOT a flexible or agile person I am stiff and clumsy - no disasters.

I do find these threads amusing though when you get people weirded out by their own blood/body fluids, (not spotted any this time) - how do people cope if their own vaginal discharge or blood or whatever, freaks them out??!!

MsStricty · 02/08/2016 23:06

I LOVE my menstrual cup. Love it! Wouldn't go back to tampons or towels in a million years.

hollinhurst84 · 02/08/2016 23:06

Yy to deadgood. Sometimes I do use tampons or a pad but it's nice to have the choice
And I can confirm that I've been upside down on a pole and aerial hoop and ridden my horse and it's never leaked

CalleighDoodle · 02/08/2016 23:56

Im having similar issues with the moon cup leaking
And after trying another. Never heard of the ruby??

HappenstanceMarmite · 03/08/2016 09:17

Right. I'm going to order one!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/08/2016 09:40

Calleigh - did you see the earlier posts about turning it once in to form a seal?

ItsMeTheMummy · 03/08/2016 13:54

This is probably going to be TMI but aswell as turning it to make the seal I've found that inserting it with almost the full step sticking out and then getting on with my day works best, after about a minute it's worked its way up a bit and tends to find the perfect position. This also makes turning it to make the seal much easier as its quite low when I insert it (I know they all should be worn low but I was inserting it where I wanted it to sit iyswim). I'm the poster who mentioned that I've tried a few cups but found the Ruby cup to be the one for me Grin I hope I won't look like s fool next month if I leak, I've had one very successful month using my Ruby cup so I'm hoping it wasn't a fluke Smile

CallieghDoodle, the Ruby cup is the one where for every one bought one is donated to a girl in Kenya so they can continue going to school during their period rather than missing out on education each month.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/08/2016 13:56

Oh I just got rid of the stem completely, much easier.

CalleighDoodle · 03/08/2016 14:08

dame yea i turn it. Still leaks. dont know what im doing wrong!

HappenstanceMarmite · 04/08/2016 14:17

Mooncup ordered and on its way Smile. Can someone please clear something up for me first though? I thought the idea was to clamp it onto the Cervix with suction (like the cap). But I just saw a picture where it was just held up within the vaginal walls? How does it stay attached if that's the case?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/08/2016 14:27

Oh no, no clamping on the cervix!!!!Shock

You wear it much lower down, twisting it forms a seal to hold it in place and stop it leaking. Not like a diaphragm.

minipie · 04/08/2016 14:32

That is exactly where I was going wrong Happenstance - I thought it had to cover the cervix like a hat and was pushing it much too far up which meant it stayed folded as it didn't have room to unfold. It's lower down than that. As a pp says the tip of it is pretty much at the exit of your vagina. You will think it's going to be uncomfortable there but it isn't.

HappenstanceMarmite · 04/08/2016 14:45

Thank you for saving me from having to call out the fire brigade with a tow rope to retrieve the wretched device from my Cervix ShockGrin

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 04/08/2016 15:35

This is really informative, I had no idea there were so many.

I bought a mooncup a few months ago but I don't find it comfortable - it's always too low down and I think the rim is too rigid because it feels a bit pinchy when it's in.

Think I might have a little search for a different one.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 04/08/2016 15:36

They make great birthday cards and do next day delivery.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/08/2016 15:41

If it's too low down have you tried wearing it higher, sounds like you're wearing it too low to be comfortable.
