...to not wash this knife?

Was chopping veg, used the knife I was using to stab the pack of chicken drumsticks so I could peel the film back more easily, then resumed chopping veg. DH thinks this is an unconscionable approach to food hygiene (and he said those exact words because he's weird), I think it's fine.

AIBU or is he?

Often wonder how people survived before everyone got so panicky over food hygiene at home, I dont think I ever had food poisoning or such at home as a child before this became so important, everyone always said how clean and hygienic Mum was in the kitchen as well but she chopped it all up with one knife on one wooden chopping board. There is sensible and there seems to be obsessive.

What if you don't have a dishwasher?
Are you allowed to wash up chickeny utensils then use the same brush/ sponge to wash up everything else?

I also second the question about spoons. If you've been prodding the raw chicken as it cooks, are you then allowed to serve with that spoon? Has the spoon also heated to the correct temperature to kill bacteria?

YNBU - you didn't chop the chicken - you just stabbed the plastic. And then you will cook your veg - no problems.

I'm totally paranoid about chicken. I don't eat meat, but cook it for my family and I have boiling water ready for dunking knives and cleaning chopping boards. I might be too paranoid, but it's because of the scary advert they used to show, with all the fluorescent salmonella travelling around the kitchen.

minifingerz · 01/08/2016 21:31

This thread is making me anxious about food poisoning.

Haven't even prepared raw meat for two days. :-(

VerbenaGirl · 01/08/2016 21:51

YABU!!! I would have sprayed the knife with antibacterial spray then run it under a hot tap then put it in the dishwasher then cleaned the sink. I'm very wary of raw chicken and turkey. My husband thinks I'm a bit OTT. However, my cousin got super-poorly with salmonella - and I really don't want to risk that.

dementedma · 01/08/2016 22:28

mini please don't worry. Some people are neurotic. Some eat chicken.

Blu · 01/08/2016 23:28

I wouldn't have done it.

I know the veg will be cooked, so that's ok, and it would be ok if I basically treated the veg and board the same as I treat raw chicken. I.e after I scooped up the veg with my hands I would wash hands, put board straight in the dishwasher, make sure knife not used for anything that wouldn't be cooked etc. I might forget myself with the raw-but-contaminated veg, e.g eat a bit of raw carrot while chopping, so would prefer not to mix raw meat with anything else.

gingerboy1912 · 01/08/2016 23:42

If the veg and chicken are both cooked then I've no problem with doing the same as you op.

You just reminded me of the time I was so excited to find somewhere that does vegan pizzas. Ordered meat pizzas for the younguns and vegan for me. The young fella cut the meat pizzas, then went to cut MY PIZZA with the SAME FUCKING PIZZA SLICER! When I stopped him, said he was going to use vegan slicer, put the slicer in a plastic container and lifted the green slicer out of the SAME container! Envy Nope I won't be going back.

PurpleWithRed · 02/08/2016 00:00

Good grief, if it's any consolation I've lived to the ripe old age of 58 happily mixing up stuff like this and can't remember the last time anyone in the house had the squits. If it's properly cooked afterwards it will be fine and even if it isn't mostly it will be fine too. Dh is ex army and fondly remembers eating 'lovely juicy' chicken that was a bit raw in the middle.

PovertyPain · 02/08/2016 00:01

I know that had nothing to do with the post, but I had to yap about it. BlushGrin

Bogeyface · 02/08/2016 00:17

I would have sprayed the knife with antibacterial spray then run it under a hot tap then put it in the dishwasher then cleaned the sink.

Now that really is OTT.

The dishwasher acts as a steam steriliser, so just put it in there and it will be perfectly safe when it comes out!
