Dc eating too much over summer

ChicagoBullz · 31/07/2016 20:13

Dc eat normal amounts in term time but are eating me out of house & home at the moment 😩
I did an £80 shop at Morrisons on Friday & it's mostly gone I can't bloody afford this.
Another problem is the plates & cups they're going through, why can't they use one cup for the whole day??? Grrrr

Well it sounds like you are saving a fortune in holiday club fees? Smile

Maybe the elder two could start a project to find and make cheap, healthy snacks and meals which are gluten free? Must be a ton of info online?

reader77 · 01/08/2016 10:10

Agree that the fruit bumps up the bills so much.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 01/08/2016 10:14

Fruit does bump up the bill but Lidl and aldi do the super six options-I bought a punnet of nectarines and one of peaches for 59p each-if they're not fussy you could buy what's on offer. Can they have flapjack? Could you get them to make their own? Agree this must be difficult for you.

SharonfromEON · 01/08/2016 10:15

Mine is eating more..Remember how much they grow in the summer.. I am ensuring more milk, more protein, plenty of fruit but yes eating more..

Mine looks like he is a starved urchin at the mo so to be honest he can eat what he likes..It did a huge bowl of cereal this morning.. twice as much as I usually give him he ate the lot...

He is very active though.

not sure what your concern is

If it is finance...you are worried about, do things to make snacks cheaper, then do things like buy a block of cheece and cut it up into protions, buy a stack of yoghurts on offer, as others have said look at cheap snacks

If it is boredom, then get them some structure , it helps

If you are actually worried about weight look at healthy snacks and increasing protein.

I have wondered how come DS seems to need to much more but have no real concerns about his diet...Would he eat junk food all day if I let him...probably...But he knows how to eat properly..

Champagneformyrealfriends · 01/08/2016 10:15

You could make scotch eggs minus the bread crumbs?

TendonQueen · 01/08/2016 10:30

Bananas and apples as filling fruit. A pack of 9 bananas is 1.50, and they could have three a day each then if needsbe. Carrots are 50p a bag and they could eat those with hummus or by themselves. Cheese strings will be relatively expensive so get big block of cheap cheese. Likewise the big packs of wafer thin ham/chicken. Gluten free pasta is cheaper in comparison with standard pasta, than gluten free bread is in comparison to standard (in my experience) so get that and make pasta salad?

Given their ages, I think you could set them a task to go to the supermarket and buy their snacks for the week, within a budget you set them. Like the Big Brother house used to be Wink

TendonQueen · 01/08/2016 10:31

Oh yes and popcorn you make yourself is a cheap filler. Asda sells the popcorn kernels for a pound a bag and they will last for many, many bowls full.

MackerelOfFact · 01/08/2016 10:39

A pack of 9 bananas is 1.50

Bananas are nearly always cheaper loose - they're usually around 10p each!

MachiKoro · 01/08/2016 11:10

It's not particularly healthy to have three bananas a day, though. My youngest wouldn't be able to move his bowels if he did!

aldi fruit sounds good value though- 59p a punnet.

My difficulty (not the OP, but hey, I have similar issue, and my eldest cannot eat gluten either) is the filling them up. I do bake things wheat free, but I don't want them eating muffins all day!

I struggle with savoury snacks- sweet ones are easy, but I think they eat way too much sugar already!
My youngest only likes two types of fruit and two types of veg.

MachiKoro · 01/08/2016 11:11

Plus, if anything, mine are less active in holiday times, as thats the chance for them to do things such as catch-up on reading, craft, and lego which they don't get chance for in term time (due to sports, etc).

Goingtobeawesome · 01/08/2016 12:05

MachiKoro - when I bake I put half the sugar stated, or less, and the kids haven't noticed.

WorraLiberty · 01/08/2016 12:08

If they're free ranging, does that mean they're not eating a proper breakfast, lunch and dinner?

Or are they bored?

ChicagoBullz · 01/08/2016 13:09

They're mostly across the park on their bikes meeting up with friends etc though tomorrow we're out on a day trip & Wednesday I'm dropping them at the leisure centre for a supervised swim (which is when I'll do my next shop Wink) No we're having meals together.

Thanks for suggestions, popcorn is a good one, also muffins. Gf ones are esp filling! I've made a rice salad today & boiled eggs for the fridge which has been met with a bit of groaning. Mean mum not going to the shops yet !!

Big pot of soup, filled with veg, chicken & with rice / barley / pasta (gluten free!) to bulk it up. Crusty rolls etc. Should last at least a couple of days & should be inexpensive to prepare.

Ilikebats123 · 01/08/2016 13:22

Although my children aren't, I'm coeliac, so we generally eat the same things at home.

I've just done a massive tray of jacket pots here - they'll do for 2 lunches here with beans/cheese/tuna.

Yesterday I did a big pan of GF penne pasta with tomato and garlic sauce.

I bought one of those huge sacks of rice in Tesco 2 weeks ago. That should last the 6 weeks or more.

I'm buying the basics/value range all through the hols and only eating meat 2/3 times per week.

Fruit is more expensive, but basics apples and bananas are reasonably priced. Tinned fruit is cheaper too.

ChicagoBullz · 01/08/2016 13:31

Plus I am making them use the same cups all day those stickers are gonna fall off any second aren't they
