... to go to A&E tomorrow?

I’ve had breathing difficulties in the evenings / at night for a while now, about a month maybe – wheezing, chest tightness, etc. (Doctor recently prescribed me antihistamines, which I subsequently realised I can’t actually take because I’m still breastfeeding my ds2.)

For about 5 months, I’ve had this horizontal ridge on one of my big toenails, which I’ve tonight discovered is called a Beau’s Line. Apparently (and this is all from Dr. Google, so y’know…) it can indicate a lot of serious things, including heart attacks etc. Had assumed for the last 5 months that it was just some weird toenail illness, but then decided to look it up tonight after discovering that another one was developing on one of my other toenails.

So now I’m sitting here wheezing (like every night) and worrying a bit. DH wants me to go to A&E tomorrow. I’d feel like a massive idiot going in because of a weird looking toenail (bear in mind my wheezing will be gone by the morning), and am more in favour of waiting to make a GP appointment on Monday.

But then I also don’t want to have a heart attack and die…!

It could be the mattress - it could be dust mites Shock

piknmixer · 31/07/2016 01:26

Could be dust mites. Could be cat dander from a previous tenant. Could be hayfever (all of these things set me off).

Don't mess around if you're really struggling - do call a dr if you need one. Steaming can help clear airways and also black coffee (weird, but true - it opens you airways).

Doinmummy · 31/07/2016 01:27

If you contact OOH or 111 and mention breathing problems they will send you to A&E . I would get an urgent GP appt. on Monday.

piknmixer · 31/07/2016 01:30

*your. Sorry - typing without reading it back.

I'd bet the mattress. Can you bin it and get a new one tomorrow? If it's old it'll be heaving with dust mites and possible cat hair and other nasties.

TyneTeas · 31/07/2016 01:33

less thankful for the dark replies

I understand you are concerned about your health but I haven't noticed any early replies. Or do you mean the ones that said A&E wasn't necessary and didn't add anything further...?

TyneTeas · 31/07/2016 01:34

Sarky not dark...

weirdtoenail · 31/07/2016 01:41

Doin that sounds sensible - I'll avoid 111 then and just ring the GP.

I am becoming increasingly suspicious of this mattress too! Will look into getting rid. Thanks piknmixer (and I'm glad you got to the bottom of your breathing issues - waking in the night with is sounds awful).

I was referring to incywincybitofa's reply, Tyne (so I suppose I shouldn't have pluralised, but whatever).

It might be worth checking you definitely can't have the antihistamines. A lot of leaflets say don't take if bf even if it is safe to. There is a breastfeeding and medication page - Wendy Jones on Facebook. You can message her and get an answer.

Doinmummy · 31/07/2016 01:53

Could you try sleeping on the sofa tonight , see if it makes a difference ?

ConfuciousSaysWhat · 31/07/2016 02:53

Tbh if I was wheezing and the medication to stop the wheezing meant I'd have to stop breastfeeding then I'd stop breastfeeding.

verite · 31/07/2016 06:20

When I was last pregnant my consultant did some research and told me i could take loratadine when breastfeeding. It is the ones that make you drowsy that you can't take.

cexuwaleozbu · 31/07/2016 06:38

Pretty much all medications say on the leaflet not to take if pg or breastfeeding. That's mainly because to do a fully scientifically rigorous trial to establish whether or not it is actually safe if you are pg or bf would require a huge number of parents to consent to a double-blind experiment to find out and for most medications that is never going to happen. However your gp should be able to identify an inhaler which is generally agreed to be probably safe.

surlin · 31/07/2016 06:54

My local pharmacist told me that I can take old style piriton while bfing. It can cause drowsiness but your symptoms are at night so no problem.

aspidistraah · 31/07/2016 07:02

Do you have asthma? I developed it after having my son. Non allergic as no allergies but really struggle with coughs. Adult onset asthma basically.

You could ask to see the asthma nurse at the practice to go through it properly (not all Gps know the correct process) or call asthma uk to discuss it.

blueistheonlycolourwefeel · 31/07/2016 07:12

If you can't speak in a full sentence and are looking blue around your lips, nose or extremities, you need to go to A&E BUT they will not be impressed that you've had the symptoms for A MONTH and have not taken the medication prescribed by your GP who may have dealt with this sort of thing before!!!

As for your toe nail, you need to get a grip!!!

mummytime · 31/07/2016 07:21

You can get anti allergy mattress and pillow protectors. I would get them and see if they help. If you could be sensitive to dust mites I would always use them anyway.
Try using more pillows/raising your head more and see if that helps.
