Tell me I'm being irrational about traveling to Germany

I'm off to Bavaria next week with my toddler DC and I've just read that an explosion has gone off outside immigration offices in Zirndorf. I'm starting to wish I hadn't booked the trip. Tell me I'm being an irrational idiot and that I've got more chance of being run over by a bus at home than getting caught up in something in Germany! I'm not usually an anxious person but events over the last few months are really playing on my mind.

You are being irrational but it is understandable.

I have never done this before but this evening I was actually in the middle of making up a list of information which is useful for people to have in the event of your death. It would be bad enough for my son and husband to deal with if something happened to me but if something happened to my husband and me my son would not know where to begin.

I am being irrational not going to Petra? I really want to and my husband is all for going but I am not keen.

Op your not being irrational at all.

I have a toddler in tow and life with such a creature is a different story than with older dc or even babies you can carry and run with.

I have anxiety going anywhere with mine because she will not play ball over anything.

I have to say I hate the - you ll let them win - posts as well.

I dont care about letting them win I want to live.

And I hate all the " I lived through the IRA blasts" well guess what, some poor people did not they are not here are they to tell us Angry.

Anyway op, what helped me, was a recent comment by someone on here re flying.

Go to heathrow or large airport and watch all those planes landing and all the planes taking off ( to land safely somewhere else).

think of the people who have to go about their daily lives.....go to work the office, they have no choice and they are OK.

Be vigilant but remember you are among thousands of germans on holiday and europeans and people from all over the world, all thinking like you. I would be vigilant but go and enjoy.

Sounds silly but I am holidaying in europe soon and I wont be sitting in the main square...or going to main obvious tourist areas...I am also nervous but am thinking as above and hoping....( I felt totally different when went away sans, DC earlier this year btw as can move more easily)

OP, I am supposed to be going there in the autumn - I am feeling concerned but will still go. I think. But I get the worry about being there with a child should anything happen - though it's very unlikely to happen to anyone, the news has has been so awful of late it's rational to be concerned. There are sensible precautions we can all take too. I've found myself thinking in my head how I'd explain DS's autism in (clear) German, in the event of an 'incident' - He is a young adult but I am worried about him, especially with increased security and his occasional outbursts.

BTW, if looking for veggie food in Germany, Happy Cow website is very useful. Most cities and many large towns now have veggie outlets - some are 'proper' restaurants, others are fast food places, and all the in betweens too. I've had some excellent veggie food in Germany in this century!!

Gute Reise, all!

We are going to France. Like you I'm slightly nervous and will be vigilant. But I am aware that I truly am more likely to be run over by a bus or have a car accident..... It's a horrible situation but seems to be how it's going to be for the foreseeable future.

My son went to Germany on Thursday with school, Friday they were 2km away from the Munich shootings. They were evacuated from the restaurant they were in to a school and were under armed guard for several hours.
I am very impressed by the German police force and although he is still out there I have not been too worried.
Some of the parents wanted the trip to return early but it was decided it would continue.
As I said to ds, something could happen on a day trip to London.

ilovesooty · 28/07/2016 00:20

I don't intend to change my travel habits at all. I don't think you can ever know what's going to happen when or where and at least main tourist areas and high profile events are heavily policed.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/07/2016 03:02

I was in London 7/7
I was in Taba a few days after the bomb
Our favourite place to eat was the same restaurant that was bombed in Marrakech
I was in Yunnan a couple of weeks after the knife attack
I flew two days after 9/11
I was booked to go to Bali a couple of days before the bomb
I was in an actual coup in Guadeloupe

But the only time I was actually in proper danger travelling was when I was hospitalized because of a stupid disease from a mosquito. One tiny insect. That tiny insect has killed more people than terrorism ever will.

So wear insect repellent and a seat belt and make sure anywhere you stay has a smoke alarm and you've reduced your chance of harm while travelling immeasurably.

Remus, there's a very good posh burger place at Friedrichstr, by the station - used to be called Hans im Glück, might still be now, or else Peter Pane. Lots of really nice veggie options. If you're in the south west, the (IMO) best Italian in the city is just off Hauptstr (Schöneberg), by the M48 bus stop called Hähnelstr. Trattoria del Corso. Brilliant food and I have no idea how they keep the prices so reasonable.

I live just outside Berlin and I admit to nervousness the first time I took the dc in since all this happened. But we were fine.

Savagebeauty · 28/07/2016 07:10

First time Remus,. Going with ds 17. His idea..also doing Krakow.

TlentifiniMaarhaysu · 28/07/2016 07:48

I lived within 200 yards of Trattoria del Corso for yonks and never stepped inside! Will have to try it now.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/07/2016 09:29

Thanks, everyone.

Savage - I haven't been to Krakow yet but it's on the list!

goodness me you have an interesting life MrsTerry!

OP, I know what you mean, I'm nervous too but am deliberately trying to keep my feet on the ground. It helps me ... might it be something that helps you?

About Petra, I would have thought that was one of the safer ME tourist locations. It's in Jordan and so far their security seems to have been excellent. Iran too, both are much more stable countries than Iraq or Syria
