To think this was a weird thing to call my DD

Just been to my corner shop with DD who is 6mo. I got talking to the lady who worked there and I mentioned that we are applying for nurserys at the moment and the woman said to DD (in that baby talk voice) "your going to have such fun with all the boys, you hussy you"
Now I'm not sure if it means something different to people of an older generation but I always thought a hussy was just another term for a slapper. I'm a bit Hmm about it

Wierd but people say all sorts of cra to kids. Smile and nod.

NeedACleverNN · 26/07/2016 15:15

It is another term for a slapper but st the same time I doubt the woman meant anything by it.

Was trying to be nice and went completely wrong. Forget about it and if she says it again just deflect it

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 26/07/2016 15:17

I'm not insulted by it just thought it a bit of an odd thing to say given that to me it means slapper!
DD is currently chewing her finger so I'm sure she doesn't care Grin

It means minx or tease not necessarily slapper though. Like slut means untidy but it's meaning has changed to slapper.

Still wierd though.

hastheworldgonemad · 26/07/2016 15:19

is she chewing her finger in a come hither way? Grin

ElornaElephant · 26/07/2016 15:20

Glad it didn't really bother you - the thought of a lady calling a baby a hussy made me Grin a bit! People say some weird stuff

pigsDOfly · 26/07/2016 15:24

Yep, that's weird.

Not sure on which planet a 6 month old baby could be viewed as a hussy. Perhaps it's the same sort of thinking as when people refer to their DC as a sexy little man or woman.

Don't know really. Odd.

Laiste · 26/07/2016 15:34

Hussy? Playing with all the boys specifically ...

Weird.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 26/07/2016 15:35

hastheworldgonebad I do have her food so maybe Grin

Hussy to me doesn't mean promiscuous, more bold and flirtatious. So not in the league of calling a baby a slapper (not that I think calling a women a slapper is ok either I should add!).

jollygoose · 26/07/2016 15:37

I`m a bit older than most mumsnetters and in my6 family it has always been used as a term of affection - meaning in the case of the baby that she looked like a future heartbreaker she was just being kind.

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 26/07/2016 15:40

It's a very outdated way of talking to a baby, but it's totally harmless. She really just means she's a pretty baby girl with a lovely smile or whatever. It's just 'chat'.

hastheworldgonemad · 26/07/2016 15:41
Grin
PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 26/07/2016 15:41

jollygoose I'm going to take it how you have said it. To me, my DD is an all round beauty. I did say in the OP that I didn't know if it has other meanings. I'm not sure I will go around calling other people it though.... Smile

OP posts:
AlpacaPicnic · 26/07/2016 15:45

She might have just had a case or 'word-vomit' though - you know when you think one thing and say another word halfway through... think Cady saying 'grool' in Mean Girls... half 'great' half 'cool'!

sizeofalentil · 26/07/2016 15:47

My family used to say this thing a lot - it's meant as a compliment: your baby is so beautiful all the boys will be chasing her and she'll be running rings around them.

A bit out-of-date and slightly odd in this day and age, but isn't that much of an unusual thing to say. Just slightly unusual!

LemonBreeland · 26/07/2016 15:48

Some people are just fucking weird!! What is wrong with just saying something nice, and normal!

DurhamDurham · 26/07/2016 15:50

A neighbour of my parents used to call my daughter 'hinny' when she was born, it's a pregnant pig as far as I know. Just smile and nod, she doesn't mean anything sinister, it's just a clumsy way of being kind I think.

ShatnersBassoon · 26/07/2016 15:51

It is weird Grin

LilacSpunkMonkey · 26/07/2016 15:54

Alpaca that is so fetch!

givemushypeasachance · 26/07/2016 15:55

A hinny is a cross between a male horse and a female donkey! Like a mule is a cross between a male donkey and female horse.

Gottagetmoving · 26/07/2016 15:56

I think she was probably trying to pay your DD a compliment that she is pretty but it came out wrong.
She was probably kicking herself after you left.

Creatureofthenight · 26/07/2016 15:56

That's definitely a weird thing to call a baby!
Hinny is a north east word isn't it, just like calling someone pet I think.

Curioushorse · 26/07/2016 15:57

Yes, 'hussy' to my mum does not have the whole 'slapper' connotation either. It's as others have said- just bright and playful girl.

jollygoose · 26/07/2016 16:02

oops I guess I must be fucking weird then as to me it would have been a normal thing to say I guess I had better watch my language in future. It does seem a shame that we ll have to be so careful these days for fear of upsetting anyone by accident.
