To feel like giving up on my degree

notgivingin789 · 25/07/2016 16:52

Hey all;

I'm in my final year at University (Spent 4 years at Uni, the last year I had mitigating circumstances so couldn't finish off my third year, so decided to take another year at uni. I have then asked for an extension as I missed out of a lot of classes due to DS having SEN, multiple appointments, assessments and so on.

I feel like giving up. I feel so bad for DS (6) as I've hardly taken him out anywhere during this holiday period. I put him into Summer camp so he does not get bored (and because I want to be able to finish off my work while his around at hime).

I have an extension; so I submit my final projects in two weeks time. But it's taking forrreeever, if any of you have taken an Art and Design course, you will know how intensive the subject is. To design my magazine layout etc ..I will spend two hours on one page!

I want at least a 2.1 as this is required to get into my Masters Course. But I'm struggling. I should be out there enjoying my summer, taking DS to a multiple of fun places, not stuck at home and working on projects.

I feel like giving up and scrapping this degree together.

Sad

Brenda it's funny you should say that; maybe it is my perfection. Though it could be heightened by the fact that I need a 2.1 in my degree to get into the Masters as they won't admit you into the course.

I've been there - needed a 2:1 to get onto my professional course, needed a certain grade on the professional course to get onto the Masters, and am now waiting to see if I've been accepted on another post grad course.

But if you don't finish you won't have any grade at all. If you can finish it to 2:2 level, you can improve it if you have time. If you throw it in now, you can't.

BrendaFurlong · 26/07/2016 12:03

Sorry that sounded trite.
But I now work in HE and have seen this in very dedicated and able students - they are so scared of it not being good enough that they risk total failure by not completing (on time or at all.)

wizzywig · 26/07/2016 12:08

If its any comfort, i think on masters courses the tutors are much more used to students with kids and family considerations

trufflesnout · 26/07/2016 12:31

What MA are you hoping to enrol on notgiving? longterm snoop and fellow art/design/science/academia crossover person

You have TWO WEEKS left! You are so so close to having this done, don't give up now. Your DS still has plenty of summer break for you to enjoy together once these 2/3 weeks are over - and you'll be enjoying that time together knowing that you did the best you could and submitted in time!

carefreeeee · 26/07/2016 12:38

Keep going!
If it's due in 2 weeks then you still have another 3 weeks of holidays left with your DS.
Don't worry about the mark just do your best.
And stop wasting time on the internet! (I speak as a fellow student!)

Anicechocolatecake · 26/07/2016 12:51

You're teaching your ds a very valuable lesson about ambition and hard work. You're showing yourself what you're capable of. You'll be so proud when you're done. Push through. You can do this. I agree perfectionism is fuelling this and it's not good. 2 weeks is nothing after 4 years of work

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/07/2016 12:51

Notgivingin - you are amazing. Look at what you have achieved so far - you had a baby at 15, have raised him for 6 years and have studied for A levels and got into university. That makes you superwoman, in my book!

And it gives you every right to be knackered now - but you know you are so close to the end of your degree. Push on now, and you will succeed in this, just as you have succeeded in other things thus far.

Even if you don't get onto the Masters course you want, there are other Masters courses out there, and the degree are about to get will stand you in good stead.

katiekrafter · 26/07/2016 17:50

Stick with it. You will regret it forever if you give up now. Keep going - it will so be worth it. But maybe postpone your Masters for a year and spend more time with your DS in the meantime if you are going to keep feeling guilty.

Hey everyone;

Just to give you an update!

I managed to submit all of my work yesterday. I got an email from my tutor saying that my work looks really good. So hopefully this is a good sign!

I'm so glad I didn't give up. Im nearly at the hurdle. Smile

Can you plan or discuss with your DS the things you will do once your degree is completed? That way you'll get to finish your degree and have something to look forward to in the future.

8angle · 18/08/2016 11:29

WELL DONE OP! keep going it will definitely be worth it - just focus on the end goal and all the great opportunities for you, DS and any further future family Wink

I know it is a cliche but focus on each step one at a time and always remember why you are doing it and what you have had to do to get as far as you have

Congratulations OP - it was hard but worth it!!

FitbitAddict · 18/08/2016 12:03

Well done! I'm about 1000 words away from finishing my MA dissertation due on 29 August, so I feel your pain. You've achieved so much and I'm pleased that you stuck at it. These wobbles are normal, I suspect.

notgivingin789 · 16/09/2016 21:50

**

Just to give a quick update.

I got my results and I received a 2.1! (a bit disappointed as I was initially aiming for a first) but at least I can apply to the Masters course as they only accept applicants with a minimum of 2.1 apply.

Thanks everyone for keeping me motivated and persuading me not to give up.

Thanks once again.

That is great news, OP! I was just about to say encouraging things about not giving up when I saw you now have your degree, and a 2.1 to boot! Bet you're glad now you didn't give up!

notgivingin789 · 16/09/2016 22:41

Thanks Better I'm so glad I didn't give up in the end! It was very very hard, but was worth it in the end.
