To be really confused about NVQs

Every time a promotion comes up in my line of work I can't go for it, because I don't have an NVQ, but I can't get an NVQ because I have a degree!

Bizarre question but I would appreciate anybody who might know the answer telling me how I can obtain an NVQ! Hmm

Hi Lucy you sound like a fellow assessor!

Sleepy hippo is correct, however if a training provider wants to charge you £2-3k for an NVQ, then run a mile.

I've worked in care as a Learning and Development Manager and have used lots of different training providers and college. A level 2 should be around £800 and a level 3 around £1200. Always ask the provider for a copy of their latest Ofsted report too. Make sure they are graded 1 - outstanding or 2 - good. There are a lots of shit providers out there.

If you are working as a senior carer, then you should have no problems doing a level 3. If you are not, then your employer will need to give you opportunities to work at that level for your qualification, so,you can show competence. Just as an example, if you do the medication unit in level 3, you need to be observed administering medication and completing a Mars chart.

Hi Sleepyhippo. Not an assessor, but I have managed large SFA contract for big care providers, as a L and D Manager. I have contracted with a number of care training providers over the years.

I now work in Engineering, and manage the graduate and apprenticeship programme (amongst other things), so still need to keep close to all the latest developments, as we will have to pay the levy next year.

Thank you very much indeed, all :)

Sounds interesting Lucy. I'm on maternity at the moment so a bit distanced from it all but am going back soon! I love it, frustrating at times as I'm sure you can imagine; we must all get the same problems, but very rewarding.

2017 is certainly going to be interesting. Sorry OP hijacking your thread now.

Good luck with your search. Diplomas are so worthwhile and personally opened up so many doors for me, both into care management and into my current job.

Hijack away :) I have the info I need so it's nice to find out other interesting info even if it's not yet relevant!
