Watching eat well for less and I just can't believe people actually spend 200+ a week on a food shop

One lady was giving a teen 20 a week to get chips and chicken 😟

We have 6 in our family

One baby
One toddler
One teen
Me and hubby
And a cat

I spend £65 a week including nappies and toiletries

This gose up to £90 during holidays and the teen is eating at home not collage

It's mad what are these people feeding there kids

My children have breakfast lunch and dinner I don't encourage grazing all day they can have fruit in between meals and I cook from sctrach pretty much 5 days a week junk on a Saturday then roast on a Sunday

I'm always in awe of anyone who can do a shop for healthy, wholesome food, with plenty of variety, plus toiletries etc for under £80 per week.
Our household consists of just me, DH and two cats, yet we consistently end up spending at least £100-150, so a family spending more than £200 doesn't surprise me in the least.

AndNowItsSeven · 24/07/2016 21:06

This for example is the amount of pasta a one to four year old child should have . My four youngest are one , two, two and three.

Rinse mince in boiling water? Isn't that just washing all the flavour off?

Marynary · 24/07/2016 21:07

I mostly cook "from scratch" (or DH does) because of food allergies but I don't think it is necessarily any cheaper than preprepared food, particularly if you use good quality meat, fresh herbs etc.

FrancesNiadova · 24/07/2016 21:11

Mince boiling & Mumsnet chicken, all on the 1 thread! Happy Days! Grin

AndNowItsSeven · 24/07/2016 21:13

No its still plenty of flavour just no fat. I buy low fat mince, however there is always some fat left.

AndNowItsSeven · 24/07/2016 21:14

I don't boil the mince, I fry it!

dementedma · 24/07/2016 21:14

That is not a portion of pasta for a toddler. It is a portion for a gnat, if gnats ate pasta.
You want to see the size of the portion my 14 year old Ds eats.

AndNowItsSeven · 24/07/2016 21:16

And that's why we have a childhood obesity problem , because people havd no idea was a normal portion size should be.

Marthacliffscumbag · 24/07/2016 21:18

There's a massive difference between and 1 and 4 year old!!! So it's not only a stupid point, it's not a point at all.

dementedma · 24/07/2016 21:19

Oh come off it. You would seriously serve 8 pieces of pasta to a hungry 4 year old?

BeJayKayven · 24/07/2016 21:20

That pasta portion is measly. And how do you know that many people over feed their DC? I could cast an aspertion and say yours are underfed.

Artandco · 24/07/2016 21:20

That's not right. If you look underneath that picture of pasta it say 2-5 tablespoons. That's just a 1/2 spoon to show you they are talking about pasta!

Marynary · 24/07/2016 21:20

That might be fine for a one year old but I'm pretty sure that DD ate much more that when she was 4 and she was right at the bottom of the healthy weight range. Aren't they supposed to eat about 1,000 calories a day?

Dontlikejam · 24/07/2016 21:23

And that website is definitive? I see it popping up a lot on MN recently but it appears to be based on one study from 2014 and was created by the Danone group (although it is apparently "independent").

Love that the boiling mince has showed up Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/07/2016 21:23

My ds is 9.5 months and he would eat 8 pieces of pasta while waiting for his actual meal to cool down! That's a ridiculously small amount!

RJnomore1 · 24/07/2016 21:25

And now, they're supposed to have 5-11 of those portions away though. That's not a meal serving.

Plus I'd argue that's more the 2 tablespoon than the 5 tablespoon portion.

Happy to measure and photograph 5 tablespoons of cooked pasta next time I make some. I bet it's around what I eat as a portion. You're just going for visual effect to find a moral high ground.

RJnomore1 · 24/07/2016 21:26

Away - a day sorry

onecurrantbun1 · 24/07/2016 21:27

I think alcohol must make a huge difference too, we probably spend less than £20 a month on alcohol (including at pubs etc.)

I agree with other posters that we are quite comfortably off and we couldn't spend £200 if we tried. We probably spend about £70 per week all told (nappies, cleaning products, loo roll etc included) that includes one takeaway and one lunch out for DH per week. Again I see £40 for a takeaway cited but we only spend £25 if it's us plus my parents and 22 year old brother! £5-£15 if it's just us. (2 adults, 2 small kids and a baby still in nappies)

PoppyAmex · 24/07/2016 21:28

Again, my disclaimer of "foreignness" - but what is this insane business of boiling mince / rinsing it with boiling water?

Dontlikejam · 24/07/2016 21:33

What sort of takeaway though onecurrantbun? Five pound per head for takeaway would be impossible here (except maybe McDonald's or something)

MoonriseKingdom · 24/07/2016 21:35

Poppy if you search for it rinsing mince is a recurrent thread topic with people fiercely divided down the middle. Personally, I have never done it as it makes no sense to me.

Grittyshunts · 24/07/2016 21:36

We spend £90 per week on shopping. We are a family of 5 with a dog, 2 cats and a rabbit. But we don't drink alcohol so I think that saves us a lot of money! I shop online and meal plan so only buy the ingredients I need for meals, cook from scratch 5 times a week, make my own puddings and biscuits etc. We also grow a lot of our own salad stuff. All saves a lot of money!! Think most people would spend more but as I said, we don't drink.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/07/2016 21:37

Pretty much all takeaways are £5 per head here, for enough food for two meals. Chinese, pizza, fish and chips. Indian is a bit more - £7

AndNowItsSeven · 24/07/2016 21:38

The website suggests the portions for a one to four year old based on government guidelines.
