Etc

MaisieDotes · 22/07/2016 19:26

Et cetera

Etc.

WellErrr · 22/07/2016 19:27

Et cetera.

So 'etc.'

Ect pisses me right off, especially on supposedly official documents.

RaeSkywalker · 22/07/2016 19:28

Etc!!! Etc!!!

wowfudge · 22/07/2016 19:29

Yep - etc. It's Latin.

WhatTheActualFugg · 22/07/2016 19:29

Who on earth would use ect?!

MrsHathaway · 22/07/2016 19:41

Ect upsets me. But then I'm a linguistics wanker and incorrigible pedant.

If you've done any French or Latin at all then you can remember that "et" means "and". In old novels it's often spelt "&c".

I find things are easier to spell if I know why they're spelt that way. I struggle with occasion and liaise because I haven't worked out the rule - thank goodness for autocorrect and spell check.

MaisieDotes · 22/07/2016 19:41

Loads of MNers fugg.

I'm surprised you haven't seen it.

freetrampolineforall · 22/07/2016 19:43

Ect is a spelling mistake at best. Even my autocorrect wanted it to be etc.

Nigel Molesworth always uses ect in his ramblings.
But that dates me.

Hrafnkel · 22/07/2016 19:45

I think people often get mixed up with this when young and learning to speak/write/widen vocabulary, as the letter combination 'ect' is found in English, but 'etc ' isn't, so it feels more natural to say and therefore write.

MaisieDotes · 22/07/2016 19:46

Also- it's etc.

Not etc

There's a full stop at the end. Although I'm happy to be corrected on that if etc is also correct.

Hrafnkel · 22/07/2016 19:46

Letter combination = consonant cluster.

EsmeraldaEllaBella · 22/07/2016 19:48

Oh gawd thanks op, I was going to start a thread on this myself. Seen so many mn'ers using ect it really makes me cringe!!!!

BringingYoniBack · 22/07/2016 19:50

Ect = electroconvulsive therapy.

So yeah.

Footle · 22/07/2016 19:51

Yes Latin , et = and. Cetera = the rest.

acasualobserver · 22/07/2016 19:51

ECT stands for Electro Convulsive Therapy.

oxcat1 · 22/07/2016 20:11

Maisie: I'm with you on the full stop.

I thought that was used when the letters omitted included some past the final one included (!), so, for example, a full stop is needed for 'etc.' as the full word is 'et cetera' - do there are five further letters after the last one included in the abbreviation, unlike 'Dr' for example, which has no full stop as the last letter of the full word 'doctor' is included in the abbreviation.

I think that's what I thought!

WhatTheActualFugg · 22/07/2016 20:21

I think in 2016 is fair to leave off the .

Just like 2 spaces for a new sentence is no longer required- even deemed incorrect in some circles. Something to do with the deign of modern typeface.

Maisie I've clearly been hanging out in the wrong threads. Or perhaps just not looking properly.

This is why Latin should be a compulsory subject in the national curriculum. IMHO.

My DH once accidentally called his younger co-worker an imbecile because she couldn't understand why so many people were making the same typo - using an M in a well known industry term for a thousand of something. She kept using a T. My DH isn't that old and went to a pretty ropey state high school but he was just ShockConfused at her ignorance. Poor love. Wasn't her fault.

Charlie97 · 22/07/2016 20:49

Phew.....but I do see lots of ect!

OP posts:
Charlie97 · 22/07/2016 20:50

And yes I do agree it's strictly etc.

MadameJosephine · 23/07/2016 19:43

My autocorrect corrects to etc (doesn't all the full stop though) so you would have to deliberately spell it incorrectly Confused
