Honestly how many of us drink too much?

Just wondering really how many other people are like us? reading the study in the guardian today and think DH and I probably fall into the worrying group of drinkers. I've sort of ignored it until now but really do need accept we drink too much and cut back. We probably share a bottle of wine 4 or 5 nights a week, sometimes maybe 6 nights a week. Its not like we get drunk ever and it is extremely rare we have more than a couple of small - medium glasses, but really have to accept this is too much! I do wonder though how common this is and potentially how worrying this could be for future health of our nation.

I had a routine once for a period of a few years of drinking just about every night and often having nearly to as much as a whole bottle of wine. I cut down by starting with one night a week "off". I now have mostly every other day "off" but can sometimes have a run of off days together or a run of on days together and I never have more than half a bottle of wine. I don't guard this and sometimes wake up and anxiously check the bottle to make sure. I think I feel better for it but the change was long enough ago that I don't really notice it anymore. I am silly on meals out though with those large glasses, I'm very tipsy after the first and incoherent and heading to bed after the second!

I drink too much. I've tried to cut out the midweek wine, which I did find easier than I expected as Wednesday was notoriously hard to get past without wine.

I'm down to 2ish wet days now but I've had a couple of big nights out recently which meant I couldn't stomach the thought of drink for a few days, which has helped.

As a pp said this thread will generally attract people who barely drink or minimise their actual consumption as they know they drink too much but don't want to admit it even to themselves.

I drink loads, DH is teetotal. My only hope is getting pregnant so I have a good reason to stop. Nothing else works.

I very rarely drink - brought up in a family where it's special occasions only, and even then very moderately. I'm always perplexed at threads like this where people say they have to keep alcohol in the house for visitors - I have friends over all the time, and visit other friends houses, and I've never been offered alcohol or been in a situation where I've felt odd not offering it. Also, people who drink in the week - don't you feel grotty the next day at work?

I used to drink loads but have stopped since having my son. I will have a few on a rare night out and a couple of glasses of wine here and there at home but not on a weekly basis.

I do think this country drinks a lot and it's just everywhere and for every mood! I noticed how much either soaps are centred around drinking when I cut down. It's just everywhere.

I know I drink far too much and have done for decades. I'm not overweight and I have a very good diet.

My attitude is that we all have to die of something so, if it's the alcohol that gets me, so be it. Who wants to live until 90 anyway? Certainly not me!
