Am I fussy? Food related

Joolsy · 12/07/2016 18:36

Tomorrow is my birthday and OH and I agreed we'd get some ready meals that we could just shove in the oven, put on the table and everyone could just help themselves to. He mentioned a Chinese dish he wanted, then DD said "Oh, I didn't want Chinese, I wanted lasagne". I said it was best if we all had Chinese so we could all have a bit of each. OH said, well we can still do that, we don't all need to have the same type of food and called me fussy for not wanting lasagne/sweet & sour/pizza etc on the same plate! I think when you're all sharing food, it should all be similar or it just doesn't go together! AIBU?

I like a bit of a mix, it'll be like going to Red Hot World Buffet Grin

sooperdooper · 12/07/2016 18:38

Not fussy whatsoever if you're having ready meals for a birthday treat! Why not make something nice?

TheWeeBabySeamus1 · 12/07/2016 18:42

Nowt wrong with a ready meal - who wants to cook on their birthday?

pictish · 12/07/2016 18:42

Was that necessary sooper?

I'd just let everyone get whatever they want. You and dh can get a variety of chinese between you.

EdmundCleverClogs · 12/07/2016 18:45

sooperdooper, did you mean to be such a snob?

I don't mind a mix of food, but I tend to have things of a similar 'taste'. However, it's your birthday, what you say goes!

SpiritedLondon · 12/07/2016 18:46

It's your birthday, your rules! I wouldn't want a random mix personally ( so no YANBU)

isseywithcats · 12/07/2016 18:47

you could get an individual lasagne for your daughter and the chinese for you as its your birthday should be your pick

Crunchymum · 12/07/2016 18:48

I get what you mean OP and I'd not fancy a mixture of cuisines on the same plate. I'd start with a slice of pizza and lasagne however technically belong in the same family???

Its your birthday so your choice!!!

SpiritedLondon · 12/07/2016 18:48

If you're in London you could get Deliverance ( to deliver)....they do a wide range of foods!

Joolsy · 12/07/2016 18:48

Yes, we're having ready meals as I cook every day and want a break! We v rarely have them but the ones I've had in the past have mostly been perfectly acceptable. DD thinks Christmas has come early....!

I wouldn't say it was fussy as you're not saying you don't eat those foods, just that you don't want to today. A bit diva maybe, but it is your birthday Grin

DelphiniumBlue · 12/07/2016 18:49

Its your birthday, you get to choose!

Allalonenow · 12/07/2016 18:50

Tell DD that as it's your birthday you have chosen to have Chinese, and when it's her birthday she can choose lasagne.

SestraClone · 12/07/2016 18:52

Why do you all have to share? Can you all not just pick your own meal?

I'd rather go hungry than eat a ready meal though, never tasted a nice one yet.

Lilaclily · 12/07/2016 18:52

A buffet is just that surely, a mix of food
I usually get tummy ache after a buffet because the mixture of olives, coleslaw , chicken drumsticks, sausage rolls, mini pizzas, spring rolls, crisps etc etc then sweet stuff is all churning around together Grin

Queenbean · 12/07/2016 18:53

Your birthday = your choice

Chinese ready meals are much tastier than lasagne though, somehow they always taste purely of garlic!

LifeIsGoodish · 12/07/2016 18:54

What earth's wrong with sooper's response? Confused I agree, if it's your birthday treat, you get to choose. If you feel having all 'matching' is nicer, then go ahead.

OTOH, I don't think everything needs to match in a mix-n-match meal, especially if not everyone likes that particular cuisine. One of my dc doesn't care for curries, so when we're having a supermarket takeaway we'll usually get a few Chinese dishes for her - but anyone can have some along with their Indian dishes, and she'll usually have some naan with her bean sprouts.

Joolsy · 12/07/2016 18:54

I just like putting it all in the middle of the table and everyone helping themselves. I've already got some Chinese starters, just need the main courses.....

i like my food to go together as well, we do have the occasional snack night which consists of crispy duck, ribs, tempura prawns, chicken skewers, mozzarella sticks and onions rings though (all from iceland) and a bit of cucumber and spring onion.

Joolsy · 12/07/2016 19:06

anyold - now you're talking!

He is wrong. You are right.

Have a lovely birthday. Cake?

LifeIsGoodish · 12/07/2016 19:58

But jools, that doesn't 'go' any better than Chinese with lasagna!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 12/07/2016 20:03

The whole point of ready meals for me is that everyone gets what they want, that's the treat, same as going out for pub meal where one person might have lasagne, one curry, one noodles etc.

Trills · 12/07/2016 20:12

YANBU to think that the point of things like Chinese is to have a bit of everything.

If one person has lasagne instead, you have fewer nice things to choose from.

fusspot66 · 12/07/2016 20:16

Have you seen the size of a ready meal? You'll get a spoonful.each..I'm puzzled now.
