Hi Smile looking for opinions on the name Mattie for a girl, possibly Matilda on BC.

OP posts:
Gingersdohavesouls · 09/07/2016 19:18

Love it! It's different but not too different which is perfect!

Gingefringe · 09/07/2016 19:20

My mum is also a Martha - we call her Mattie.

I love it of course.

fatcathatmat · 09/07/2016 19:21

I think it's cute, but if you're not already you should be aware that there's a Mattie in the first season of the UK house of cards, who likes to call the much older man she's sleeping with 'Daddy'. That would squick me out a bit.

Onedaftmonkey · 09/07/2016 19:22

Love it x

PinguForPresident · 09/07/2016 19:23

Cute, but definitely as a shortening of Matilda or Martha than as a given name.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 09/07/2016 19:23

I like Matilda, with Tilda and Tilly as NNs but definitely not Mattie, it is a boy's name to me, also very young childish, most Matthews shorten Matty to Matt as they get older.

AtSea1979 · 09/07/2016 19:24

Love it, also love other variants of Matilda such as Maddie or Tillie.

Undertone · 09/07/2016 19:26

It's the name of Ricky France-Lynch's favourite pony in Polo by Jilly Cooper

Just so you know

Zuccarelli · 09/07/2016 19:28

I'm not keen but I don’t like the name Matilda anyway as I know 2 dogs with that name Grin

TheWernethWife · 09/07/2016 19:29

I have a gorgeous kitty called Matilda

Bishybishybarnabee · 09/07/2016 19:31

Love it. A friend's sister is Matti, short for Matilda, and it really suits her.

pigsDOfly · 09/07/2016 19:32

I think it's lovely.

Don't understand though, if you like Mattie and that's what you would be calling her, why you would give her a different name on the birth certificate.

Whathaveilost · 09/07/2016 19:37

There's a baby name board!

How can this be deemed AIBU?
I really hope this board doesn't get clogged up with baby names. At the very least it could have gone in chat.
I know people may say why does it matter however if it didn't matter why bother having seperate topics. Let's just have a free for all.
Why not post about a failing relationship in Style and Beauty, why not talk about your new horse in Telly addicts section!

By the way, I don't mind it as a name.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 09/07/2016 19:38

I would always go for long name on BC, we did with both ours and they really like having all the options now they are older and people invariably assume the NN versions are shortenings anyway. DH and I are the same, we use both our long and short versions in different situations.

Crunchymum · 09/07/2016 19:39

Sorry but I loathe this phenomenon of packing a name and a nickname for a child.

It's greedy. Pick a name, if a nickname originates then let it do so organically.

All this 'DD is called Amelia NN Milly" fucks me right off. Pick a name.....

Mattie as a name for a girl is cute. It's actually quite nice but it's not really a 'name' as such.

It may well be a NN for Matilda but it may not. If you like it then use it but don't hedge your bets with this name is X but NN is Y shit

Crunchymum · 09/07/2016 19:40
  • pick not pack.
Crunchymum · 09/07/2016 19:41
  • Picking not packing. Fuck off phone.
inlectorecumbit · 09/07/2016 19:42

Horrendous Sad reminds me of matted hair

WamBamThankYouMaam · 09/07/2016 20:01

No. Don't like it. It puts me in mind of MATTE, which is a health and safety thing.

PotteringAlong · 09/07/2016 20:06

Not for me. Surely a shortening of Matthew?

SerenaWilliamans · 09/07/2016 20:08

Serena is better, honest.

FruStefanOla · 09/07/2016 20:10

Mattie is a lovely name/nickname - it could also be short for Matigan (which is probably an unusual name in the UK?)

Orda1 · 09/07/2016 20:26

'Mattina' Hmm

Artandco · 09/07/2016 20:28

Orda- Mattina is a very common Italian name

peppercold · 09/07/2016 20:31

It's cute
