AIBU?

to think that Andrea Leadsom should not be prime minister?

She is against gay marriage.
She has hugely exaggerated aspects of her CV numerous times in the past (she lied).
She has said some awful comments relating to Theresa May, indicating that Andrea will be a better pm because shes a mum.
She seems to have incredibly strong, extreme Christian views. I very much doubt she can fairly represent the views of the country.
She just to be a strong supporter of remain campaign but changed her mind for this election. Unclear why.
She can't win, can she?

I always thought TM was PM material well before all this. There something of Maggie about her

Interesting view user I think you might be right. Dangerous game to play, look what happening in the referendum, I don't think any of them really wanted the result we got.

After all the political stunts leading up to the vote I think user has nailed it.

AL is merely a pawn to make TM seem like the good option Gove had no one able to make him seem like a good option thus be in eliminated

YANBU, but I don't particularly think TM should be either.

I find her comments about being a mother hugely insulting. I've read comments from TM in the past making it pretty obvious that being childless wasn't a choice for her.

So to use TMs status as a childless woman is deplorable. She is either hugely stupid and thoughtless, or a vile nasty piece of work.

There is a huge difference between views put forward on an Internet forum, anonymously and views put forward by political figures

So unpleasant views stop being unpleasant when they're anonymous?

YANBU. I agree she is not fit to be PM.
However she could win because the people voting in this leadership election have some pretty fucked-up opinions (in my obviously not fucked-up at all opinion!)

I have only seen AL on tv once but her views on gay marriage and fox hunting were enough for me to hope she is not made PM

And yes Cameron was stepping down after this term..... it was all set up for a Boris takeover. It was meant to be a narrow remain win, making way for a new 'euroskeptic' PM BoJo, who of course never wanted to leave the EU, he just wanted to appear sympathetic to the electorate whom voted leave and everyone was a winner.

It was a watertight plan. Except there was no contingency for the leave vote winning and this is the fucking mess we are left with.

yes crunchymum - it was a Boris set up, due to Cameron's inability to deal with Farage and his own right wing/Eurosceptic.
Except we find out how v easily led the GBP really is.

idiot don't blame Brexit! Labour party is falling apart, and the Tory party is rubbish.

I'm finding the whole thing quite horrendous tbh. Out of the two I certainly think May should be chosen and I think she will be. But that is very far from a comfortable thought in my head.

The problem is, it is the Conservative party membership who will decide. They are not representative of the country as a whole (they tend to be older, if not all retired, and relatively wealthy). They also, on the whole, voted Leave.

I think the grassroots Tory associations will go with Leadsom. May is very unpopular for not dealing with immigration and deporting foreign criminals.

When I was canvassing and leafleting before the Referendum many of the people I spoke to said they had never heard of Leadsom before the Debates but thought she was terrific. Obviously I don't know how many of them are paid-up members of the Conservative Party and will be able to vote for the next leader.

And she wants to bring back fox hunting Sad

You are absolutely right, CruCru. Most of the people who run the Conservative Associations outside London were canvassing and voting for Leave.

It's v regrettable to think that should AL become PM, we will have to rely on senior civil servants to repeatedly say to her "Don't be fucking stupid. With respect."

Report
Cleo1303 · 09/07/2016 13:38

The other thing is that most of the Conservative Associations outside London wanted and thought they'd be getting the opportunity to vote for Boris. Gove shafted Boris and lost a lot of support from MPs for doing that so he didn't go forward. The Conservative Associations weren't too keen on Cameron and May is too close to him. They have been cheated, as they see it, out of getting Boris. He's supporting Andrea so they probably will too.

I too think she will get the membership vote. They will want someone who voted Brexit.

Imo she doesn't have the relevant experience to be PM, she really doesn't understand how it works.

I really hope she doesn't win.

Report
Brokenbiscuit · 09/07/2016 13:38

I think they both want to bring back fox hunting, don't they?

I think user may be right. I never thought I'd be hoping for May as PM. Have I been manipulated?

She could face a vote of no confidence very quickly given how few MPs want her as leader.

we will have to rely on senior civil servants to repeatedly say to her "Don't be fucking stupid. With respect." That's exactly it.
