to keep my remote

My freeview/dvd player remote.
Ds has recently decided staying up all night watching crap is a cool idea. (1 or 2 in morning)

Along with not getting up in time for school. Not having time to shower.
Not having time to wash 3 plates, cutlery and a saucepan.
Not doing homework...

He has been "going to bed" at 9 ish.
Waiting for me to go to bed, then sneaking back through when I am half asleep...

I don't mind watching something lighthearted or funny for an hour before bed, once everything else is done...
But most of the time, we don't bother.
We play in the garden or chat in the kitchen or are out until bedtime.

I took the remote to my room.
Put it on a shelf.
It disappeared.
Ds came in to my room and managed to find it 3 shelves down.
So I put it in my bedside drawer.
It managed to go in to the front and switch the dvd thing on. All by itself...

So it is now hidden in my room...

I am thinking of giving the damn thing away. We rarely use it. And it costs £120 a year or something for a licence.

Ds (12)
Dd (3)
The cat.

The cat lives outside. He doesn't even come home every day.
Dd is still in a cot. She can't escape. She is not quiet enough to go to a different room without waking me.
"Ds you have left a stink sock in the hall. It needs to go in the wash. ""A book. That needs to be in the book shelf"
Non-stop...
Me. I was reading a book in my bed.
That leaves ds.

Lock it in a box and let him earn TV time through doing homework, chores and general niceness (playing with 3 yr old)?

That's the plan.

Bit he has no interest in doing even the smallest of jobs.

Taking his plate from the table to the sink is beyond him...

I went through a tough time with my middle teen DD, but the rule was that everyone sleeps of a night (so phone etc off).

You need non negotiable rules, with consequences, before he hits the teen years.

I wouldn't play a hide-the-remote game with him, but tell him clearly the internet password will be permanently changed and the TV forbidden to him should this happen again.

TV until 2am aged 12 needs tackling.

Leave the remote, take the batteries out. You can keep those in your pocket more easily.

Yes.
His motorsport has been cancelled!
And the remote hidden.

And he has had to cycle to school as he missed his bus...

He has other batteries for remote cars and things.

There is no WiFi. So no password.

I think I will just shove the TV in the shed.
There is only one shed key...

Can you isolate the electrical circuit that the tv is on, on the fuse box? Flick the switch when you go to bed. No power, no tv.

I could, but I think it trips the whole house .
(Bungalow, so no separate circuit)

It would also mean climbing over a whole load of stuff in the garage...

Knowing ds, he would put the cooker fuse in or something. ..

Glad I'm not being U.

All the other kids are allowed to watch what they want! I must be a meanie mummy.

He has been told.
It is now MY TV.

It is no longer a family TV.

(Mind you, in 1987, when both Yvonne AND Pamela in year 9 were allowed alcohol it DID feel like ALL the other kids are allowed and I am not)

Could you put the TV in your room? So it's still available as and when you want to watch it, but he can't sneak into your room in the middle of the night!

On top of the wardrobe would be fine!

I don't usually bother watching it.

This reminds me of when i was a kid, i had a tv in my room which i was put on at night - she got so fed up she cut the plug....I figured out how to fix the plug and used to watch with the volume right down haha, she never found out till I eventually told her Halo
