To think school internet should be safer!

My 7 year old has come home from school today and said that while using the computers at school "a picture of a man with his bits out" popped up.
It was a friend next to hers computer, she got my daughters attention and mine "clicked the cross and got rid of it"
It actually happened yesterday and for various reasons it seems they've both neglected to tell anyone about it until now! I've messaged the other child's mum to see what she knows of it, and will of course be going into school first thing in the morning!
This is an infant school! How on earth can this have happened?! I mean SURELY this should be impossible?!

I think with the best will in the world sometimes dodgy stuff comes through. Did they tell the teacher ?

I learned the hard way as a teacher that google images doesn't get filtered in the usual way 🙈 Were they using Google?

It's the internet! As soon as one site is blocked, another one springs up.School filters are some of the best there are, but they are not infallible. Children are told repeatedly that if anything comes up they are unhappy with, to report it to the teacher straight away.

I once had a student search for white baps. (I'm a food tech teacher) LOTS of the search results were something other than floury muffins. 😂

The child was playing a game ( I don't remember the name, a coding game from how she described it) and the rude picture popped up in a separate window. No googling going on, but it was an internet based game i believe as she said it has an e on it when you click to play it. From how she's described it, it sounds like an advert, she said there was writing at the bottom.

They got rid of the picture and carried on with what they were doing! My child got called away to do something else quickly after, can't say why the other child didn't say anything.

Possibly a virus? Let the school know asap.
With the best will in the world these things will happen on the internet. The bad guys are always a step ahead I'm afraid.

I will be straight in first thing tomorrow! I just though my my child would get past 7 years before viewing pornographic images!

it is very hard to make it completely safe for children unfortunately but if it was a pop up then pop ups and adverts should be disabled. of course there is nothing to say that they weren't disabled and a different child from another class changed the settings - I have known that to happen in primary schools....

Pop ups don't work like that. They don't just spring up willy nilly from safe sites and no school would knowingly allow access to a site with dodgy adverts and their AV program should have detected malicious script. Kids were probably on something they weren't supposed to be. I would be asking what the game was personally. With all the will in the world the best filters aren't infallible. Kids get onto things. We had four different ways to bypass the myspace block at school.

It's an infants school, 7 is the oldest child! I understand mistakes happen but they weren't being silly they were on a game that has a permanent short cut to it!
It just seems to have happened too easily!

School internet is the same as the actual internet, just with stronger filters!

The school might have OKed the game site at some point but anything can happen to an external website - it can be hacked, it can change ownership, it can bring in new advertisers, the domain could be sold to another website - any of these things could affect the content that appears. The school can't be expected to check every website every day!

By all means let the school know but don't go in all guns blazing. Your DD obviously knows what to do about unwanted images/content online (i.e. close it and tell an adult about it) which in the long run will stand her in better stead being safe online than just internet filters.
