It's now becoming accepted. On a site that prides itself on its snark and acerbicity it's seen now that the OP has to POINT out in which mood you should reply to a thread.

Plus it's naff cutesy and Facebook. #blessed #lovemylife etc.

someone was ' How utterly OFFENSIVE' the other day about me slagging off some item of clothing
LADY YOU NEED TO GET OUT MORE

ScrambledSmegs · 04/07/2016 10:20

Does the 'D' not stand for Dratted then?

That's me told.

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 04/07/2016 10:20

Don't pander to the twats! In times gone by if you were too thick humourless to get it you would have it pointed out. Now we are dumming down to an absurdist position

Exactly.

Someone is always offended about something usually nothing

Absolutely. It's beyond belief the crap people are supposedly offended by. They need to save their energy for things that actually are offensive - there's enough out there to get their teeth into.

LazyJournalistsQuoteMN · 04/07/2016 10:21

It's lighthearted, if it is funny/lighthearted.

StrangeLookingParasite · 04/07/2016 10:21

maybe if there weren't so many utterly humourless and nasty twats just waiting to jump in on what are clearly jokey threads and give the op a good kicking and crap all over the thread, there wouldn't be so many people trying to get in there first and stop them before they start.

Totally agree with this.

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 04/07/2016 10:23

Scrambled. For me it stands for a variety of things 😁 ...it's just a way of making the H S D stand out as a 'person' rather than a random letter. It's easy to 'lose' single letters - I don't 'read' "Dear" at all.

EdmundCleverClogs · 04/07/2016 10:24

Moving, I was thinking chat but 1. I can only find that forum through Googling it (where the hell is it on the forum list??) and 2. it's not always 'lighthearted' there either.

I think the other issue is that AIBU is clogged up with so much nonsense threads, it's become troll central recently. Difficult to know what's serious, jokey or just plain goady at the moment.

StrictlyMumDancing · 04/07/2016 10:26

Actually I love arf suggestion of mood OP highlighting. Not sure how practical it could be. But it would be hilarious to see comments like:

If you aren't even going to RTFT just look at the OP FFS. ITS PINK. PPPIIIINNNNNKKKKKK

Well that's me amused Grin

EdmundCleverClogs · 04/07/2016 10:29

Dratted Hmm. It's just lazy, who can't take half a second to write 'husband, wife, dog'? Then gets confusing when the person may be talking about 'dear friend, father, fiancé, fuckface'. It just adds to the whole pretentious, middle class stereotype this place is known for.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 04/07/2016 10:36

Perhaps some posters are a bit humourless but then again, some thread-starters think their threads are funny when they're just embarrassing like a bout of 'dad dancing'.

If a thread is really funny, you don't need to put 'lighthearted' anywhere in it, surely? The complainers should perhaps not 'post for traffic' if they can't defend their humour? Wink

Agree with Edmund about the D-whatever, nauseating. If you can type, you can add the requisite characters!

I feel like I've found my people Grin

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/07/2016 10:46

D-whatever has been around forever, there's a list of acronyms at the top of every page. If you want to deviate and start using DS for Sister then that will cause confusion. So maybe don't do that if you want people to know what you're on about.

Chat is actually chat and you can find it on any list of active threads. Go into any thread in chat and you can start a new thread from there in chat by clicking on the V or "Start thread" at the top of the thread.

I'm actually very happy for there to be a clear culture on here. It's what I like about it. I don't want it to be accessible to anyone capable of typing in the Mumsnet to Google. I'd like the bar a fraction higher than that please.

EngagementRing · 04/07/2016 10:48

I get so confused by people bemoaning the 'D'H thing. It's internet-forum wide, not invented by or for MN. Talk forums I was on in the late 90's did it. Others I still use also do.

Sparklingbrook · 04/07/2016 10:50

I don't read 'dear' either and don't see an issue. Everyone knows what DH means etc.

If you just typed 'H asked S what he wanted for dinner but D wanted something different that would be odd.

But if you feel the need to type out husband/son/daughter that's up to you.

StrictlyMumDancing · 04/07/2016 10:51

I love how people read the acronyms in their own way. I used to think STBXH was stupid bastard ex husband. In most cases that applies perfectly so I keep to it in my head.

EdmundCleverClogs · 04/07/2016 10:55

Yes, I'm aware other sites use it. Doesn't make it any less nauseating and lazy (especially for a forum that bemoans bad language skills, suggests anyone who uses bad grammar sod off to 'nethuns').

fattyfattytoadgirl · 04/07/2016 11:01

I am new here.

I wouldn't normally have used "DH" but I used it because I saw it so often here, that I thought it was de rigueur!

Now I know better, I will go back to typing it out in full.

StrictlyMumDancing I thought that about STBXH as well.

Birdsgottafly · 04/07/2016 11:23

""especially for a forum that bemoans bad language skills, suggests anyone who uses bad grammar sod off to 'Nethuns""

The 'Forum' doesn't bemoan bad language skills, a few Twats do, who can be told to fuck off (regardless of how long they've been posting), as easily as anyone else can.

As for it diversifying, to include people, who may need the bar lowering, occasionally, I think it's a good thing.

We can't have the World populated by the fuckwits, who barely seem to manage life, at a level that most of us can only dream of, with massive amounts of disposable income, mutiple bathrooms, cleaners etc and think they still have it tough.

Forums such as this help to burst the bubble that lots seem to live in, which is a good thing.

Sparklingbrook · 04/07/2016 11:58

I don't see how it's 'nauseating and lazy'. Everyone knows what it means and there's no confusion.
It's not bad grammar, just accepted acronyms.

It's overthinking things a bit to read any more into it.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 04/07/2016 12:21

Mostly if you're not being a fuckwit then you won't need it pointing out

This.
