about smashed iPad screen?

DP has smashed his iPad screen again - third time in six months. After the first two smashings it was repaired at a cost of £150 (DSD cracked it the first time, he finished it off). Repaired iPad has now been dropped again. We have shared finances - I can see a 'when can we get this fixed?' coming. AIBU to say each of the following scenarios:

  1. no - iPad doesn't get fixed as pretty sure it will only get broken again
  2. iPad gets fixed but I get equivalent amount from money to spend on something for me, given its second time in 3 months
  3. iPad gets fixed but DP pays it back by making me breakfast in bed/dinner/washing up for a month as we could otherwise spend the money on a nice treat/weekend away for us both AIBU in each of the scenarios and WWYD?

That sounds too expensive first time mine broke it was pretty expensive but second time it was £50. I now have a tempered glass cover and a silicone cover as the DC use it. If it is a common occurrence, maybe you should get insurance, but not sure if they would pay up that many times.

It was an accident but he really needs to be more careful, a child doing it I can understand but a grown adult should be more careful. Between DC n myself we have also dropped my iPhone4 quite a few times n broke the screen, i refuse to get a new phone. DH has a friend who buys the screens of eBay and replaces them for free. Saying that I wouldn't trust him with my ipad only let him do the phone to fix as its ancient.

I used a 3rd party repairer (M Blue Ltd) and the ipad stopped working after a few weeks. They also kept it for 4 weeks after promising a 48 hour service, then held me to ransom over paying for express service saying if I didn't pay it anyway they were keeping the ipad!! Not always worth going cheaper...

DD has had her iPad since she was 7. She's now 11 and has never broken it. It's been on holidays, trips, camps and schools. She's got a cover on it, but only one of the £10 from Amazon ones.

Your DH is very clumsy. I'd go for not replacing it this time, and maybe getting a cheaper, more robust tablet instead (in fact I hear the Kindle Fire is almost indestructible- maybe one of those)

But bumsex (never thought I'd say that...) when you say 'you get what you need', does he need his iPad fixed a second time in 3 months?!

Before recently I would have said he needs to sort himself but then I had two screen breaking incidents in quick succession, having had apple stuff for years without so much of a chip... I've bought an Anker tempered glass screen protector and a speck super strong case so here's hoping!
If you can afford it then yes, get yourself an equal value present (though this could come back to bite you in the future!).

I have broken my IPhone's screen three times (admittedly in my defence I have an issue with my grip) and if DH posted this as below, I would not be happy (and I imagine everyone would call him controlling) YABU especially the third one!

Breaking it that often in such a short space of time is ridiculous! If it was my dh id make him wait a couple of months and then go for option 2, and if it happened again so soon id do the same but make him wait longer the next time

MackerelOfFact · 04/07/2016 10:35

If you can afford it then get it fixed, but 2 x £150 must be approaching the cost of buying the bloody thing brand new.

I would go with saying you want the equivalent money to spend on something for yourself - then perhaps he will take a bit more care of it, as the repairs will effectively start costing double.

kslatts · 04/07/2016 14:07

YABU - he is not a child.

kali110 · 04/07/2016 14:49

Insurance will only pay twice i was told

peppatax · 04/07/2016 18:26

Not seen a split opinion on AIBU much but DP has agreed that he'll wait a few months before any repair and put money aside towards it that he would have otherwise spent on himself so feel thankful I didn't have to write a 'breakfast in bed' contract although new shoes would have been nice
