Was I BU to not reverse?

I'm a little bit unsure of the 'rules' on reversing up/down hills Confused

Was riding down the road near where I live (I ride a small motorbike) - said road is narrow in places so it is often necessary for one car to reverse to a wider point if 2 cars meet each other going in opposite directions.

There was a car in front of me that had another car facing the other direction in front of it, so obviously the 2 were trying to get past each other and having a bit of a stand off as neither was reversing.

When I arrived I expected the person facing up the hill to reverse as then there were 2 people waiting to come down the hill and as I am on a small bike I have no reverse gear and can't reverse up the hill. They didn't, they just continued to sit there until 3 or 4 other cars arrived in both directions causing a bit of a traffic jam! Eventually they did move but was IBU to not reverse before the queue built up?

That's ok Bengal, I should have said earlier that it was a blind bend! You were not U to think I was an idiot if I could see the blockage further down the road and continued anyway because I would have been Smile I'm sorry I didn't say that before.

Yes, my instructor was terrible. We did the whole day (9-5) outside in the rain in November in a car park. No classroom session. No headsets when on the road. Didn't show me how to pick up the bike or use indicators. Shouted at me when I didn't know what different road marking were. I even dropped the bike on myself at one point as the car park was full of pot holes and I hit one doing a manoeuvre. Burnt my leg on the exhaust in the process Sad. He spent most of the day talking to the other girl doing the course and just let me do stuff by myself. I couldn't get the hang of the clutch (kept stalling) and instead of teaching me and letting me practise, he just stuck me on a 50cc scooter for the road test, took me up a massive hill and then told me off after for not going fast enough. I burst into tears at one point during the day because I was so nervous and terrified. In all honesty he probably shouldn't have passed me but I really needed to be able to get around and since then I've done my own research and practised a lot. I now ride a clutchless bike because I'm not at all confident in my ability to handle a fully manual bike. I've actually booked myself another days training next week with a different company to get my skills up to scratch. Stupid thing is I could legally ride a manual bike if I wanted. It's a joke really!

What worries me is that he might be teaching others inadequately, especially young boy racer types, who won't get taught properly and will end up in accidents. I've actually made a complaint again he as I really think what he is doing is dangerous. Apparently he isn't qualified to teach the full direct access bike course but he does it anyway Angry

I can do a U turn. Just not on a steep uphill slope in a narrow lane with cars behind me

You could have if you'd left enough space when you stopped. And if you're going to say that you couldn't because of the blind bend, then you approached that blind bend too fast.

What part of the country are you in?

There will be loads of bikers who will give you decent advice.
Myself included, if you are north west..

Fedup if you are not sure about the road rules it could be worth downloading one of the theory test apps for your phone. When I was learning for my theory test I found that answering questions over and over helped me learn the rules. I know you don't have to do a theory but it's just for your own understanding. I found it went in better than just reading the highway code

Saying you shouldn't have a bike if you can't push it in all eventualities is fucking stupid and unworkable.

Agreed, but that isn't actually what I said RandyMagnum ...

OP find an instructor who will teach you about road positioning. It's one of the things that will keep you safest on two wheels on the road. Don't apologise and kerb hug - learn when it's appropriate to take the lane.

It's not just the hills it's the roundabouts and the trams and, well, just everything. I'll happily drive into central London but Sheffield gives me the willies.

I am SO glad you said that! I had to have extra driving lessons just to go round the roundabouts :-(
