After all the stuff with brexit and families falling out with each other, our employer asked that we refrain from putting our political views on social media as it will impact the business.

It is a shame because vocally if conversation comes up I will add my own views like everyone.
I also wondered if we have to be careful about social media and its impact on our employment surely the same would be for when we are overheard in public by others?
Is there a difference between speaking in 'public' and social media?

where is the line drawn ? Am I over thinking this?

I have a colleague(we work for a company you will all have heard of) who has the company name at the top of his FB page and posts far right crap, pictures of semi naked women and extreme political views on his page. I don’t actually like him very much and although I wouldn’t do it in a million years, It’s seriously tempting to accidentally let it slip to someone important.

The company I work for has a social media policy. You can post what you like providing you don't say what company you work for. If you do put the company you work for then it is expected that you don't post homophobic/racist comments etc. (although I would hope people don't do this but I know that they don't). If you do and the company finds out (if it's offensive people will grass you up) then you are likely to receive a disciplinary or sometimes the sack depending on the seriousness of the remarks

For my work we have strict social media guidelines, and we are told that posting on facebook is publishing, just like writing for a newspaper. We have to be very careful what we say and are not advised to be political in any way. I'm a politically opinionated person do I find it tough! But conversations between people on real life does not count, they are private. And if someone filmed you or recorded you without your knowledge and then published it they would be in the wrong and it would not count as you having publically given your opinion.

Depends whether you have put in your FB info where you work or not, personally I don't so anything you have to I shouldnt be linked to the company.
Social media is a nightmare but you're allowed to have an opnion. But Religion, politics and finances would be a no-go for me in an untrusted forum of people I dont know

General rule is post nothing you wouldn't stand in the street and shout. No internet posting is really anonymous. Including this one.
