Masters and a low 2.1?

Got low 2.1 from top 5 uni (63%) in modern languages. I'm not applying for a masters currently but just wondered how any future applications may be regarded. FWIW I would prob be applying for a literature masters and most of my literature module results are 65+ and a couple of high firsts in coursework. These aren't on my transcript but could get lecturer to perhaps acknowledge them in reference?

Sorry: my AIBU is, do I stand a chance of getting onto a good master's programme with a low 2.1 undergrad degree?

Autocorrect omitted all my apostrophes in the word master's, great Blush

Yes. You'll be fine.

I have a 2:2 and I'm just finishing my second masters. Don't see why it should be a problem, if it is just shop around. I did my undergrad degree part time in only four years while working full time including pregnancy and birth of DD towards the very end, so I don't feel at all bothered by having a 2:2. It's just a result, it's not the sum total of who I am and I've still got a BSc (Hons), same as the people who got a first.

University's love people who want to do masters. They obviously won't just take anyone as they need people to pass, but with those grades you should be fine. You can always email the course coordinator to check before you apply to set your mind at ease.

I agree with Dona, but I would suggest emailing the graduate admin or similar.

My uni just requested a 2:1 for masters in my department. Didn't specify a level within that. Although you got discounts off fees (this was pre loans for postgrad) if you got a higher 2:1 or 1st, and an alumni discount if you had done your undergrad there

redexpat · 30/06/2016 18:52

Yes youll be fine Smile

FoggyBottom · 30/06/2016 21:07

Yes, you'll be OK. Those marks wouldn't get you non-existent funding though.

I have a 2:1 and a MA. It depended a lot on the reference I received from my undergrad dissertation tutor. She was (and is) highly respected in her field, and my MA was in a closely related area.

Mouikey · 30/06/2016 21:21

I got a 2:2 (loved the vodka!) and got into an amazing uni for my MA - actually best one for my subject! The vodka obviously affected my undergrad as my average score was way higher for my MA!!!

Gabilan · 30/06/2016 21:22

You can get on a course. I've known people do masters without an u/grad degree. But yes, highly unlikely you'll get funding. If you've got other relevant experience that will help.

honeycrumpet · 30/06/2016 21:29

I have a 2:1 and an MA with Distinction from the best university for my postgrad subject. Just like the others have said, the 2:1 didn't hold me back at all and nobody asked about the actual specific numbers. Absolutely get your tutor to highlight marks you are particularly proud of, if they'd be especially relevant for your MA course.

CalleighDoodle · 30/06/2016 21:43

Ive got an Master's and a 2:2 (graduated in 2000) and also had a year of the fees paid.

PaniWahine · 30/06/2016 22:12

We ask applicants for full transcripts but 2:2s are definitely given offers unless the courses are marketing / PR / Digital; those are over-subscribed so offers are being made to be firsts and borderline 2:1s

You'll be fine

acasualobserver · 30/06/2016 22:49

Have you got the money?

Yes?

You're good to go.
