To secretly join the AA

The one with cars not alcohol.

DH is very good at getting the best deal on pretty much everything - he always switches utilities very year etc.

Our breakdown cover is £150 pa he's convinced that given we've never broken down it would be much cheaper not to have any and simply pay to be towed when and if that happens.

I can't cope with the idea of not being covered. I'm imagining standing by the side of a wet road with the kids desperately phoning around to see who is prepared to tow us. I'm thinking of joining the AA and not telling him, he won't be covered but that's his choice.

I'm I being a bit nuts?

I pay £20 a month to the RAC for home and recovery for me and dh, can't believe how cheaply some of you are getting this!

Jenda · 29/06/2016 23:15

Just do it! I've needed to call AA twice and they've been out within an hour. Once when I was on the motorway they literally arrived in 5 minutes! I don't have kids yet but it was horrible enough waiting on the side of the dark road in the rain on my own let alone with little ones!

AA are very expensive and offer a shite service in my experience. I have had much better and cheaper service from green flag.

I joined the RAC and one month later I hit a pothole and smashed my wheel. I had to be low-loadered back home, 5 hours away. If I'd not had RAC that journey would have cost me £1,000 approx. Money well spent.

I usually get green flag but this year went for the RAC using club card points.

We have RAC under £100 for three cars tow home from anywhere in the UK.
Dh is a mechanic, he would never be without tow cover and he's the only one in the family that has ever used it, twice.

MassiveStrumpet · 02/07/2016 09:15

I would never be without it.

As for the dynamics of money in marriage, I would simply say "well, I want to be covered so I'm buying it." Any argument from him would be met with a dismissive shrug.

I've had RAC cover for about 7 years... called them out about 9 times (sometimes more than once in a year)...

My fan belt snapped in my car - lovely chap came out, had a spare one in car... fixed it (this was on Christmas Eve and he still got to me within an hour)

My sisters cars fan belt snapped and I was driving us in her car - the SAME chap came out, sadly couldn't fix it but towed her car back to my house.

My partner was trying to swap around part of the starter motor as mine was corroded on my old Corsa - couldn't get it right so it kept misfiring... called the RAC out and within 5 mins, the guy had put it right (and from then on my partner NEVER touches my car, it always goes to a garage).

I've had 2 flat tyres... both time, lovely chap has come and put on the spare for me.

My oil light came on when driving on the motorway - Lovely guy came out and sorted it out

I've never once had an issue with the RAC and all of their people seem really nice and helpful. I'm quite chatty in general, so whilst they're 'doing their thing', I'm asking them if they have many female RAC Engineers, how long they've been doing their job, what's the weirdest call out they've had etc..... They have all been happy to chat and sort things out so I won't be changing any time soon! Smile

I use driver guardian. £65 for the year and a 10% discount each year for renewals.
