So few people seem to grasp the basics. And economics doesn't lend itself to soundbites.

The thing is, things can get so, so much worse. The potential toxic combination of a recession and a mandate given to the more right-wing elements of an already right-wing party will do vast amounts of damage.
This was a protest vote but it hit the wrong target.
What if the jobs that there are in the poorer areas dry up, and there's no more jobseekers? It happens. In poor countries in many parts of the world, there is unemployment of 40 or 50% and absolutely no formal social safety network.
What if we become even say more like the US, which is hardly a stretch. After the recession, there were people living in actual shanty towns.
So as crap as an impoverished area of England might currently be, and the neglect and underinvestment is bloody shameful, it really can get so much worse for people.

Roonerspism · 26/06/2016 21:08

Unemployment in Greece is 45 per cent amongst the young. Merckel is quite happy with that. Suicides amongst the older citizens are increasing.

Yep, the great liberal EU project in fine form there

froubylou · 26/06/2016 21:21

But an impoverished area in say Rotherham is a luxury to some of the eastern Europeans Toastdemon. That's the thing. Whether they are working illegally cash in hand, registered as self employed and in receipt of wtc/ctc they have so much more here than back home. They have the NHS, schools, dental treatment. They have running water and indoor bathrooms, heating, rubbish collections. There are jobs if they take cash in hand, work nights for below NMW (and it does happen) or do a shit job with no rights and a 0 hours contract.

We have been told by each and every government that things will get better. That childhood poverty will be gone. That the jobs with better rights will come. That the industry will come back to these towns and cities.

So what do we aim for? A bit better than a shanty town? A bit better than a Romanian slum and tell ourselves 'it's better'.

I want more than that personally. And immigrants are not the problem. I don't blame anyone for wanting better. And it's not a case of 'its us or them'. But it has been a case of 'we got near to fuck all, you have nothing more to give us and yet there are more people coming? Why?'.

Back to the OP's theme of education and the curriculum, I believe that there are fundamental flaws in our education system. The nature of government targets on schools means that the breadth of the curriculum has been reduced and that many results are fudged by teaching to the test so that beyond that test, many students move through the school system with inflated results. To demonstrate the required progress they're regularly tested and the curriculum is focused on higher level skills to the detriment of a good base of basic skills to underpin them. In short, how do you expect people to make an informed choice about the EU when they can barely find and label those countries on a map.

A system that is expecting 11 year olds to identify subordinate clauses when they struggle to string a coherent sentence together is not preparing the majority of society with the functional skills they need in life. Yet another example of the government's warped priorities.

Sunsetplumset · 26/06/2016 23:54

Does being able to read and write in English make you a special superhuman or something?
What about dyslexic people, should they not be allowed to vote?

A better thing will be for people to stop being so ignorant and learn some different languages and not expect that because you speak English you are some superior being.
Just a thought

Wordsaremything · 27/06/2016 19:32

I wasn't implying brexit voters are stupid. But to understand the issues properly, some knowledge of economics would have been helpful - as well as constitutional issues. To say this was too complex an issue to submit to a referendum sounds crass. But perhaps that's the truth?

mrs mook exactly. Thank you!

People voted leave because they have nothing to loose? God help anyone relying on food banks now, because that's hardly going to be improved with the departure of the 'relatively' moderate DC and the arrival of the further right BoJo and Gove. A worse economy hits the poorest hardest.

The referendum question was far to complicated to be boiled down to a simple yes or no vote, and it was far to complicated to ask the public to vote on.

As a side issue to the referendum, there absolutely should be more 'general life skills' taught - some basic economics and money management skills, basic politics etc.

What a strange proposition op.

I think many subjects need to be on the curriculum.

Incl personal finances, saving and so on. But for me philosophy to help people think beyond their confines, and POLITICS.

RainYourRottingMyDhaliaBulbs · 27/06/2016 20:29

toast people are already living in shanty towns, slough sheds anyone?

people are living several families to a room, several men to a room....

BMW6 · 27/06/2016 20:37

But to understand the issues properly

OP can you really hear yourself? The sheer ARROGANCE of you!
Loathsome. Absolutely loathsome.

LightDrizzle · 27/06/2016 20:39

Another person who studied economics (only A-level, A grade) and managed to drag my knuckles to Oxford University where I got a first in an unrelated subject. I have volunteered at two local charities working with refugees and asylum seekers for the last 5 years (I work full time in a paid job too) and I voted leave.
