To ask how many of you 'Remainers' actively campaigned/canvassed prior to the referendum?

To ask how many of those of you who seem to be so well informed/intellectually and morally superior and clued up on the EU actually bothered to canvas/campaign/promote the Remain campaign? Had people been privy to many of the wise words being spouting from said superior mortals after the event, might the result of the referendum have been different?

But to answer your question, no I didn't campaign. But I don't feel any guilt over that. I also didn't see any campaigners from either side here in Glasgow. I saw one Remain poster in a flat window and that was it.

TheNaze73 · 24/06/2016 16:31

Well said OP. I did the same as you

ExasperatedAlmostAlways · 24/06/2016 16:36

I don't see what difference it would of done for me to campaign when I can't stand campaigners stopping me or coming to do my door.

I prefer to personally, research things in my own time..Not have people turn up at my door in the middle of me making dinner or bathing the kids. Or stop me when I'm rushing down town trying to grab essentials. I find it an inconvenience and wouldn't want to inconvenience others.

So no I didn't. and I won't..Ever.

PickleSarnie · 24/06/2016 16:36

Previous to the results coming out, I'd seen articles claiming that it was going to be a remain result since it was all a big old fix. And there was the whole paranoia about pencil crosses in the leave box being rubbed out by "them" and changed to remain. Do you seriously think that if the results had been the other way that all the leave campaigners and voters would have taken defeat gracefully?

Yes, I did. My area voted to remain. I guess you could criticise me for not going out to where the, ahem, uninformed live?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/06/2016 16:48

I did. My area also voted to remain.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/06/2016 16:51

Please don't be angry at those who voted to remain but didn't campaign. You don't have to be an active campaigner to now be very worried

wowfudge · 24/06/2016 16:59

I'm angry that while the result is for Brexit, the margin means it's hardly a ringing endorsement. In my area the vote was split 50.5 v 49.5 out v in. Heartbreakingly close. I spoke to lots of people. With very few exceptions the majority said they wanted to remain.

I'm another remain-voter who is politically restricted so can't campaign.

The public were absolutely bombarded with campaigning on the referendum so I don't know what difference it would have made to have even more - People just listened to and believed the side they wanted to believe.

sorenipples · 24/06/2016 18:31

I could have done more. My immediate circle only contains a pinch of leavers , so I misread the situation and didn't see the need. I respect the right of people to want to leave, but now I am realising there are some I know, who had I informed better (and they believed me) maybe, just maybe, I would have influenced their opinion. Yes I feel guilty - as if everyone like me had tried, we may have influenced a million between us. We were complacent. I honestly didn't think leave would win.

CheeseFan · 24/06/2016 18:35

Seriously?! What a dick. Well done you for being superwoman/man.

Your medal is in the post.

InShockReally · 24/06/2016 18:41

Every single person I know voted remain. Our area voted to remain. Canvassing honestly seemed pointless - a bit like saying "would you all like to keep breathing tomorrow?"

As it is it's been almost a day and I'm not ok yet. Almost 50% of voters are not represented in the final decision. I honestly think it needs to go to a re-vote (not that it will of course!) to try and get more unity - I'm baffled that we can make a decision (either for or against, and I mean that) with that level of split.

CalypsoValdez · 24/06/2016 18:53

I did. So did DH.

Kitsa · 24/06/2016 19:11

Shrug. Drastic life circumstances right now mean I couldn't so I never even considered it, but tbh I probably wouldn't have anyway. I don't listen to campaigners, I do my own research, so it's hard for me to fathom the mind of someone who doesn't know how they'll vote till someone gives them a leaflet and talks to them about it. I did push my view a lot online, where I do my own research, but you probably don't count that.

DH, (housing officer) did a lot of arguing in the pro-leave hotbed that is his estate patch, but it seems to have done no good.

I don't think regret over the result should be restricted to those who meet your standard of involvement, though, OP.

yorkshapudding · 24/06/2016 19:37

Seriously? What do you want a fucking medal? So because you're some kind of superhuman who manages to be out and about campaigning, whilst singlehandedly looking after a baby full time but also simultaneously working full time (how does that even work by the way?) the rest of us mere mortals should shut our lazy, apathetic mouths as only people who campaigned are entitled to an opinion. You do realise that you're having a go about the wrong people here don't you? Why don't you save your sanctimonious bile for those who didn't actually bother to go out and vote? The people you're berating actually cared enough to participate in the political process. Just because you made the choice to hand out a few leaflets that doesn't make you morally superior. A lot of condescending drivel has been spoken on both sides during this referendum but to suggest that those who voted remain are actually to blame for Brexit and should have their feelings on the matter silenced if they didn't actively campaign takes the fucking Biscuit

throwingpebbles · 24/06/2016 19:40

I'm politically restricted too, so can't campaign. But yes I do feel very disappointed that "remainders" didn't fight harder. There was an air of complacency from many, and few attempts to really tackle the myths being spread about by the brexit lot.

Sad how many who voted leave are now openly admitting to regretting it.

EElisavetaOfBelsornia · 24/06/2016 19:48

I'm politically restricted, and I always campaign. Not in the area where I work, but the chances of being rumbled stuffing leaflets through doors after dark seem low enough for me to justify the risk. I'm not sure restricted even applies in a referendum, it's not party political. Beside the point, I know.

cupidstunts123 · 24/06/2016 19:52

The rules around restriction and 'purdah' as we call it were tougher than I've known for any other election. (In reply to pp)

In my job anyway Smile

LadyIncuntliaButtock · 24/06/2016 19:53

Nice going, OP. I think I hear the screeching sound of you peeling your judgey pants out of your arse crack from here.
