In a referendum where a large play has been made to make immigration a key issue, and to rouse the anger people feel over it to be translated into an economic tool then people are going to say this.
If you feel that leavers were not motivated by racism then you're very naive. I am not saying all are, some feel we are better off governing ourselves and immigration has nothing to do with it, but you just need to look around you on this site to see some of the horrific comments about taking our borders back and foreigners stealing our jobs.
As with anything, there are ignorant people everywhere. And they will be manipulated by politicians. Such is the way of life.
If you strip back all the niceties and get real for just a minute here, the vast majority of British people do not understand economics or what they have voted for and they base it entirely on principle rather than facts.
Many remainers have no clue what that means but they vote for "better the devil you know".
Many leavers have no clue what that means but they vote for "taking Britain back".
Part of the beauty, and horror, of democracy is that we vote on our general principles.
My general principles? that life on this planet is a team sport. That we belong in Europe, that we did not know enough about the impact long term of leaving the EU to have this referendum and we have acted rashly.
For those with the general principle that we are better off governing ourselves, and being responsible for Britain and only Britain - then all respect to them. Not my view, but a worthy view.
But as a remainer, I "remain" utterly convinced that many, many, many of those who voted to leave did so based on the misconception that our country is being taken over by foreigners and needs to be taken back.
To consider it not racist of being over-generous. I work in a restaurant where 70% of the staff are foreign, if they all left tomorrow the place would close down because no "white british" would want to wash dishes for minimum wage.
We are confused as a nation, but we have forgotten largely what national pride should be about. And it's not about closing our borders. It's about who we are, what we stand for and whether or not we stand together.
I hate the result of the vote, but I greatly appreciate that I live in a country where we get to vote.
So let's celebrate our Britishness this morning
