Why don't people want my money?!

NoCapes · 23/06/2016 17:35

Is it just me that finds businesses just don't actually want their money?

We need some work done in the house, I've been trying endlessly to get someone in, nobody ever calls back
I even went to a family members friend thinking surely they won't let me down - yep I'm up to 3 unanswered messages

We need a dog sitter for when we go away, I went on a couple of dog sitter sites and I've messaged and messaged and messaged people, and nothing
One guy rang me, we had a good phone call he said he'd check what day was best with his wife for us to visit and text me, the day came and went with no word from him so I gave him a text, nothing

Trying to book my son a birthday party, got through to someone, he said he's not in the office he'd ring me back in an hour - this was yesterday at 10am and still haven't heard from him

Why don't people want my money!?!! Argh!

I contacted a dressmaker and left several messages.

She never returned my calls, not even to say she couldn't do it.

If you're in Herts I'll dog sit for you!

YANBU OP.

It has taken me three years to find a gardener who actually comes and gardens. Window cleaner said he would do it. So upstairs neighbour and I said great - he took six hours to mow two smallish lawns and never returned again for either windows or garden. Find another bloke - he only wants to do lawns and hedges - I am desperate for beds to be dug and planting of loads of plants I've been trying to keep alive in pots (I'm disabled and can't do it myself). He disappears, never to be seen again. Someone recommends a gardener who will dig beds and plant... but won't do lawns or hedges.

Finally I have a gardener who will do everything. The only ouch is that he charges 18 pounds an hour. Thankful I gave up smoking after a stay in hospital which pays for it.

I need some work done on a fence, I'm dreading trying to find someone.

Listen, if anyone has a problem with people not wanting your money, I'll gladly help you out.

Send me a PM and I'll send you a link so you can pay directly into my Paypal account.

It's a sacrifice, but I'm happy to help if I can...

moosemama · 23/06/2016 18:49

I'm so glad it's not just us.

We have been trying to get a builder to come and do several jobs for us, most don't return our call, others respond then disappear, some give a day/time for coming to quote, then don't turn up and others do come and look round, but don't bother to quote. I've actually lost count of the number of builders we've been through so far and one of the problems we have is getting worse the longer it isn't fixed.

Had the same problem with electricians a couple of years ago and plumbers a few years before that.

We're just about to start looking for a cleaner and dog-walker and I'm dreading it.

I'm starting to think dh needs to retrain but then I remember how monumentally bad he is at DIY and think better of it.

Anyone in West Scotland wanting a tradesman PM me.

arethereanyleftatall · 23/06/2016 18:51

We need to link to this thread every time a poster comes on and says 'there's no jobs out there.'
There's hundreds. As clearly demonstrated.

PoohBearsHole · 23/06/2016 18:54

plumbers, tried several. you might think that I was being lazy. it took a YEAR. A FULL ON 13 months (i kid ye not) we had no heating for 13 months as no one replied, couldn't do it, didn't turn up.

we wore a lot of jumpers. but we couldn't throw money at them 😰😯

Tworingsandamicrowave · 23/06/2016 18:54

I get that they are busy but would a quick call to let you know that or a message on the answerphone to say that they have no availability until such and such a date be too much to ask for?

FledglingFridge · 23/06/2016 18:55

Aye, anyone can be a sparky. Fuck training and time served. Same with plumbers,/joiners/brickies
Window cleaners fight like hell to get the council contract usually, you can't just start up with a bucket. The licence last for 3 years.
Most of these jobs are trades, qualified.
I wouldn't even let some random walk my dog with other dogs unless they really knew what they were doing.
Decent gardeners have landscaping qualifications.

arethereanyleftatall · 23/06/2016 18:56

Microwave - I guess it depends how many similar messages they get.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 23/06/2016 18:57

DH has been trying to get a house painter for his other property. It's a bit battered by the sea.

Can he get one to even ring him back? Nope. He's tried every company within a twenty mile radius and then the only one who did was a bid for a quote from over 100 miles away.

arethereanyleftatall · 23/06/2016 18:59

Clearly window cleaners don't fledgling.

Granted you can't suddenly start being a sparky/plumber etc

But you sure can be a cleaner/window cleaner. Start tomorrow if you wish.

FledglingFridge · 23/06/2016 19:02

Can't speak for England but in Scotland you need a license and they don't just give them out.

How to apply
You can usually apply in person, by post or online. You will need to pay a fee, which will vary from council to council.

You may also need to provide:

proof of your public liability insurance
a copy of the employers liability insurance that covers you, if you are an employee
at least 2 passport photographs
Displaying your licence
If your council issues an identification badge for window cleaners you must wear it visibly while working. Otherwise you must carry your licence with you while working.

Penalties
If you work without a licence or make a false statement on your application you may be fined up to £2,500.

If you don’t meet a condition on your licence and continue working you may be fined up to £1,000.

You must notify the council if you no longer meet the conditions for holding a licence. If you don’t you may be fined up to £1,000.

If the council demands you return your licence and you don’t you may be fined up to £500.

Aye, get your bucket out.

FledglingFridge · 23/06/2016 19:03

You also need to know how to use a ladder safely. You can't just grab your steps and be off. Working at a height is dangerous. You can also easily damage people's property putting large ladders up.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 23/06/2016 19:04

Gardeners for us. Any gardeners in North London, please PM me!

arethereanyleftatall · 23/06/2016 19:06

Not sure about Scotland, but I'll bet in England, there are hundreds of window cleaners who just knock on doors with a bucket.

trafalgargal · 23/06/2016 19:09

I tend to only use tradesmen who have done work for friends or neighbours. Mostly that means they are responsive.

I did find a gardener on FB last year when the garden needed serious landscaping after a wall needed to be knocked down after a storm and by the time it was all rebuild the garden was a building site.
I called the same guy yesterday evening as MIL needs her garden sorted before she moves. I left a VM he called back at 9am the next morning - went to see MIL same day and is doing the work this week. I have some more work to be done -I'll definitely use him again and recommend him to anyone who needs a gardener. He's also a reasonable price :)

Girlgonewild · 23/06/2016 19:10

The company that agreed to do some hedge cutting for me (big job) which I wanted to come before early April are still too busy to come. I might just do it myself at this rate.
I wonder if it's a sign that there are more people in work than ever and traders have a lot of work on. One reason I get a lot of work in my business is I give instant answers and do things within days.

JennyOnAPlate · 23/06/2016 19:11

I've been trying to get someone to clean out gutters out for a couple of months now. I've had 3 people agree to do it, arrange a day to come and then not turn up. Not even a phone call to tell me they're not coming.

DavidPuddy · 23/06/2016 19:13

It's because of all them immigrants stealing all the... oh wait...

Atenco · 23/06/2016 19:14

What happened to all Polish workmen, did they go home or have they gone native?

PUGaLUGS · 23/06/2016 19:15

Wanting someone to come and see our roof! No takers Sad

FledglingFridge · 23/06/2016 19:16

Scary. If they fall, is the homeowner then liable? Who covers your property if he puts a window out with a ladder?

Looking into it (am no a window cleaner) it's about £300 outlay excluding a van. They can make a fortune though, hence how patches are licenced here, stops arguments sometimes. www.cleaning-matters.co.uk/page_291469.asp

FledglingFridge · 23/06/2016 19:17

What happened to all Polish workmen

They're still here. Nice lads. I know of more Polish lads on sites than out and about.
