I have just got back from voting (thankfully I was able to) but there were 3 people who were 'not on the register' yet they all said they had not moved house and had very recently voted in the London Mayoral and local elections.

""I have just got back from voting (thankfully I was able to) but there were 3 people who were 'not on the register' yet they all said they had not moved house and had very recently voted in the London Mayoral and local elections.""

If this is really happening then the whole Election may be voided (or whatever the real name for it is).

People will not engage. I went to some houses five, six and seven times to try to tell people they weren't on the register but they wouldn't engage.

I can't imagine I was the only electoral registration officer who experienced that. The worst ones? Tenants and students. Councils invest significant sums into making registration easy, people don't engage.

I was really shocked as I've never seen that happen before. They did have someone on the phone who seemed to be trying to sort it out (well she was asking the other person on the line if they could still vote) but I didn't stay to see the outcome.

I do hope they managed to get it sorted.

I didn't get a polling card neither did DH.

I panicked about this a while ago and reregistered just in case, although I had voted recently in a local election. DH didn't reregister.

We've both been able to vote today. Annoyed we didn't get cards though. I know you don't need them but it feels like discouragement.

WanHeda, I found out by chance that I had been taken off the electoral register just before the general election. I spoke to the people at the council and said how unhappy I was and that if I had found out a day later it would have been to late to register. They told me that as it was a mistake I would have been allowed to vote so if I was you I would give them a ring and see why you have been taken off the register.

grannytomine · 23/06/2016 14:46

Just to be clear I had been taken off the register as someone else moved house and registered in a new area. I was told there was a problem with the automatic online system and it had deleted me not the person who moved so it isn't always due to people not registering.

Yes, feeling unsettled in a way I haven't about anything political since decision on Iraq war. Was very interested in politics when younger, got disenchanted and haven't voted for a very long time. This has been different and I've come right back in, to consider the issue a lot and to vote (to remain). Don't particularly trust promises / threats of either camp of what they will do after the referendum.

But it has really focused my thoughts. Main difficulties are: wanting to be part of Europe (have lived in there for almost half of my adult life in 2 different EU countries) but seeing all too well the heavy bureaucracy of Brussels and also, my biggest concern for our society: the attitudes, propaganda and racism wrt people from Eastern EU countries that I've seen (first on visits home and then since living back in UK) which have really shocked and disgusted me and contrast so sharply with my actual RL experience (personal and professional) of the work ethic etc of people from those countries
