...to think this is gross? *throat picture included*

This is my 7 year old's throat. What's going on? Someone said maybe a tonsil stone? What do they do for those, does anyone know? She's had some ear ache and trouble swallowing but has had tonsillitis repeatedly since two years of age, so swallowing always a bit of an issue anyway.
If it was my throat if be poking it, but being as she's 7 I've stayed away Smile
She's booked into GP tomorrow but not sure what to expect?
Any wisdom would be greatly received Grin

Tell them you think she's got obstructive sleep apnoea. If she snores loudly she probably has got it. They can't refuse to refer you for that.

DownUnderBound · 21/06/2016 21:40

Mine cough them out. So satisfying

Helen1966 · 21/06/2016 21:48

Our GP referred my daughter re tonsils, but the consultant rejected the referral so we didn't even get to see him! In the end we saw the consultant privately, cost £120, who took one look and confirmed that they needed to come out. He did the op on the NHS though. So might be worth you seeing the consultant on a private basis in the first instance.

ohisay · 21/06/2016 21:57

Private may be an option if tomorrow goes the way the previous appointments have gone!
So frustrating when I've not yet come across anyone outside our gp surgery who doesn't think taking them out would be better for her! I have debated changing GP surgeries over this, fingers crossed tomorrow will get us somewhere and I won't need to!
I've only seen this dr once, well my daughter has, he seemed approachable enough.

My daughter has these! Her breath is vile even after brushing her teeth! Doubt she will try and get them out 😒

MotheringShites · 21/06/2016 22:57

OP there's another thread about Obstructive Sleep Apnoea running at the moment. Are your dd's tonsils large when not infected? My GP told me that no child should snore significantly. My DS had his out age nearly 6 and it changed his life.

MotheringShites · 21/06/2016 22:58

Oh and we went private to have it done. I can highly recommend a great paediatric ENT if you are near London.

TheDisreputableDog · 21/06/2016 23:06

OMG have had a 'scratch' at back of my throat after a mild dose of tonsillitis a couple of weeks ago and just looked to see I've got one of these! Popped it out with a cotton bud as instructed and another 2 followed... Gross yet satisfying Grin

This post should really be in Sporner Corner though.

Nessalina · 21/06/2016 23:10

I get these, I have a crevice in my right tonsil where one regularly develops. I can tell when it's getting big because I feel it when swallowing - cotton bud prodding easily pushes it out. I concur, they stink Shock
I had tonsillitis constantly as a child!

SloppyDailyMailJournalism · 21/06/2016 23:24

Do we really have sporner corner? Oh wow!

WIBU to wake my sleeping babes on the off chance that have one of these I can pop out?

ladyjadey · 21/06/2016 23:47

Get them out! My DD gets tonsillitis once a year or so. Every time she has it Drs suggest referral for tonsillectomy. Get them chopped, problem solved

ohisay · 22/06/2016 06:56

I looked for sporners section and couldn't find it, sorry!
Her tonsils look how they do in the photograph all the time, apart from the White lump, that's new.
I will update you all after the appointment later!

Bambooshoots14 · 22/06/2016 07:03

Good luck with referal

ohisay · 22/06/2016 07:04

Mini update, she touched it and it came out! She swallowed it and was almost sick Blushkeeping the appointment still.

Well dr decided it was puss she knocked off and not a tonsil stone! Thinks she has had tonsillitis.
When questioned about ENT referral he said book in with dr X he used to be ENT surgeon and see what he says.
The saga continues.......

TheCrumpettyTree · 22/06/2016 14:52

I think you need to ask what their reasons are for refusing a referral. Throw it back at them. Then see how their reasons match with the referral guidelines.

I've nursed many many children who have had their tonsils out so can't understand why they wont refer. Unless it's because they've been told to reduce their referral rate. Which doesn't help your dd.

GoudyStout · 22/06/2016 16:30

I used to get recurrent tonsillitis and tonsil stones, but they generally died away in my 20s. In my early 30s I had a quinsy - a really nasty abscess - and something you'd really want to avoid. I'd definitely push for getting her tonsils removed.

Somewhereundertheduvet · 22/06/2016 16:53

Well dr decided it was puss she knocked off and not a tonsil stone!

Did you show him the photo?
Looked pretty clear to us as a tonsil stone!
Confused

Have a look at the above...
If your dd falls within get the guidance, then she should be referred.

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 22/06/2016 17:17

Side note - where is Sporners Corner? I've been looking.

TroysMammy · 22/06/2016 17:18

Boy click on "In the Club" it's there.

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 22/06/2016 17:31

Thanks Smile

OP hope your daughter is ok.

ohisay · 22/06/2016 21:48

Told him numerous times that she said it felt hard, that it was irritating her and she cheered up once it was gone. Showed the picture. Still insisted it was puss Confused
