So I'm trying to cut back on our food shop. First option is to switch from Sainsburies to Aldi.

What things are good? Anything I should avoid?

We tried one of the curry sauces and didn't like it at all, oily, lacking in flavour and hard to get the lid off the spice bit.

Foxedme · 21/06/2016 19:24

Pesto is so much nicer
Fish - especially Salmon, Salmon Wellington
Mature cheddar is so much nicer than all the popular brands
Choccie - lots of fun new ones to try
Crisps
Frozen veg and pizza have all been great
I'm a fan of their roast beef joints - British beef, much better cuts than we could get in Tesco and cheaper.
All the cheese is good
Some nice posh yogurts
Cheap biscuits like hobnob copies
Shower gel a bit like Original Source is nice
Boxes of raisins
Light cereal bars called benefit which are an Alpen light knock off for half the price and great for slimming world

We used to spend so much money in Tesco or Sainsburys but are really happy with Aldi.

Foxedme · 21/06/2016 19:25

Their earl grey tea bags are better than any I've tried

Foxedme · 21/06/2016 19:28

They do a really good Sauvignon blanc

purpleladybird · 21/06/2016 19:30

The only things I won't buy are the tampons. I felt like I had prolapsed (I hadn't).

Other than the incident above, everything has been excellent.

Tummyclutter · 21/06/2016 19:32

I avoid everything.

witchofzog · 21/06/2016 19:37

Their Lacura caviar cream and Q10 serum is amazing. The cream is supposed to rival Is Prarie which retains at the £200 mark. My skin has never been better and I look years younger.

Grocerywise I love their mustard, washing powder, fishcakes, Benefit cereal which is nicer than Special K, fresh juices and baked beans. The only thing I hate is their mayo which is an odd consistency

witchofzog · 21/06/2016 19:38

And yes to avoid the tampons too. They get stuck Shock

JacquesHammer · 21/06/2016 19:43

I honestly can't think of anything to avoid. I do a full weekly shop in Aldi and never have to shop elsewhere.

They even do Yorkshire Tea for about 1/3 of the price of anywhere else Grin

Burgers
Brioche buns
Lemon sorbet- so lemony
Mature cheddar, milk
Fruit and veg fine
Most dried and tinned stuff fine
Nuts
Chocolate
I bought lacuna sun spray ( recommended by which) put it on at the weekend and it attracted bees! 10 landed on me in 1 hour - I had to go and have a shower!

onlyslightlyinterested · 21/06/2016 20:24

Their frozen minted lamb shanks, are to die for Smile

SabineUndine · 21/06/2016 20:27

Fabulous cheese, and also bottles of Henney's dry cider were 75p cheaper than S*y's last time I bought it there.

fishandlilacs · 21/06/2016 20:31

We always shop at aldi or lidl. We get everything there. Its fine, their ketchup tastes different to heinz but I find heinz too sweet now

notamummy10 · 21/06/2016 20:32

Their own cola, it's the only supermarket own brand cola that tastes virtually like Coca Cola! I also love their own version of Cadbury's snaps - especially the mint ones.

Palomb · 21/06/2016 20:41

Yes the Coke is fab but Lidls is better!

witchofzog · 21/06/2016 20:54

Ooh and St Etienne lager is lovely too

notamummy10 · 22/06/2016 08:16

Palomb we only have Aldi near us (that's in walking distance), but the next time I'm near Lidl I'll try it.

Palomb · 22/06/2016 08:47

£2.40 for 6 2l bottles... Tastes just like Pepsi!

JoffreyBaratheon · 22/06/2016 09:56

Ah yes, my 14 year old is addicted to the red berry Benefit cereal. He keeps asking if he can "be on benefits". The joke wore thin long since but he never gets bored of it.

JoffreyBaratheon · 22/06/2016 09:57

And how did I forget the Swedish fruit cider! As nice as Kopparberg.

bibliomania · 22/06/2016 10:26

Another Aldi-lover here.

Wonderful

  • rosemary crackers
  • wine
  • Irish sausages (I don't buy much meat so haven't tried much else)
  • fruit and veg (esp. avocadoes, aubergines, ginger, fresh herbs)
  • Lacuna face cream.

Not so good

  • I don't like the washing powder and conditioner. I prefer the scent of the big brands like Persil/Comfort. Your nose may vary.

And I love the element of surprise in the middle aisle, even if I don't usually buy.

Rattymare · 22/06/2016 12:47

Their Salmon Wellington (2 Pack)is delicious.

redshoeblueshoe · 22/06/2016 13:22

Individual brie with chilli - baked mmmmm

ILOVEMATHEWPERRY36 · 22/06/2016 21:08

Mince, lasagne, quiche, cereals, yoghurt, croissants, pan au chocolat , crisps, cheese, chops, bacon, mince round.... To name a few
