Renting issue.

Ok, I want to know if I'm being unreasonable before I contact the estate agent.

We have a landlord, he owns all the houses on our row. We appear to be the only family and the rest are all sharers. We handed in our notice a while ago due to change of finances meaning the house was over our new budget - landlord very kindly lowered the rent to accommodate our new budget.

However, I can't just have a lazy day with the little ones as he turns up all the time and opens the door and lets himself in to check lightbulbs, talk about him painting the railings, wanting to do a boiler service. Never any notice.

I feel like I can't relax as I'm always waiting for him to turn up, and you know how it is you feel like everything has to be like a show house for landlords and I've got 3 under 3 and I really really need to be able to have the occasional day where I can nap when they nap but I just have to sit in the house on edge, I can't even have a quick shower incase he turns up. It's been 6 times in the past 8 days for various things he wants to do around the house and outside....

You do not have to let him in at all, no matter how much notice he gives you, or what is written in the tenancy agreement.

Fact.

I'm a landlord.

I actually think he's being really creepy and can't imagine any justification for popping in that frequently. You poor thing, this is really out of order. You need to stand up and say this isn't ok, OP

Agree it's creepy. 6 times in 8 days??

I would lock the door and hope he gets the message.

It is very unusual for a landlord to even bother themselves with lightbulbs, that is usually the tenants responsibility!

Boiler service needs to be done once a year, by a qualified gas person.

Painting railings, iffy ground, depends on the tenancy.

I am inclined to think he is looking for excuses to come round, just to see exactly how grateful you are for him lowering the rent!

Right that letter, get it sorted now, before he does actually try it on with you. Left as it is, I am pretty sure he will at some point!

Sorry for being a realistic cynical old bag, but there you have it!

Also just FYI (I am also a landlord) whether you keep your house tidy or not is nothing to do with your landlord - his only concern should be for things which are fixtures and fittings i.e. Stuff he would have to fix or replace if you broke it like kitchen cupboards, sinks toilets etc. Incidentally anything that you damaged and he had to pay for would come out of your deposit anyway! So you need to relax and enjoy your home with your family, if you can't do this then I would honestly suggest you find another property as all this nonsense must be having a detrimental effect on your life which is not on!

One more thing, would I be right in thinking that the landlord has never just let himself in when your partner is at home?

Get your partner to be there tomorrow. This is not on.
