To really detest the term 'little man' for a baby/little boy

Mimicat44 · 20/06/2016 09:21

It just seems that everyone is using this term now and it annoys me - they're not a little man, they're a baby or a little boy! Why impose any connotation of being a 'man' already on a tiny child, just let them be a child! I don't hear 'little woman' with reference to a baby girl so why the keenness to have it the other way round?! Is this some subconscious way of encouraging little boys to be 'manly' or stereotypically masculine or am I completely overreacting and it's just a cute term. I am prepared to accept that maybe I am Smile Anyway, anyone else got any terms/sayings they find (potentially) unreasonably annoying?

YABU and should probably stop getting irritated by things that don't matter, not a happy way to be. I call DS 'wee man' sometimes, it is not saying he is a man. Same as 'monkey' doesn't mean he's a monkey..

iwuddarryl · 21/06/2016 11:45

Ugggh.
I hate the term 'little man' as well.

iwuddarryl · 21/06/2016 11:46

I can't think why Confused
But 'little man' is just horrible.

I also hate to see a toddler in a suit.
It's all sorts of wrong.

No toddler belongs in a suit.

hmmmum · 21/06/2016 11:49

YABU because it doesn't mean you see them as a man or that you're in a hurry for them to grow up. It's just a term of endearment like monkey or whatever. In Scotland it's "wee man" - I've sort of seen it as a way of making a boy feeling encouraged that he's a big boy - you know how three year olds etc always say "I'm a BIG boy/ girl" - it's almost a way of affirming that.
But fair enough if you don't personally like it.

hmmmum · 21/06/2016 11:51

I don't think that people who call their toddler "little man" are going to then put them in a suit Hmm
Calling them little man says almost nothing about your parenting style. It's just random words.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 21/06/2016 12:03

Oh.
DH uses it all the time.
I thought it was just a regional thing.
Doesn't bother me in the slightest.
Pretty sure it doesn't bother DS either as if you use an endearment he does not approve of he'll go all Brian Blessed on you... I'M NOT such and such I'M first name and last name.
I quite liked it when my DD said: I'm not a monkey, Mummy, I'm a humans.
(no idea about the extra s, we had it for a while, Mulan was Mulans etc)

I thought it was just all sorts of clothes. I know MN wisdom says nothing but white babygros until they're 17 but I can't say I get upset if I see a be-suited toddler at a wedding.

ppeatfruit · 21/06/2016 12:10

Hmmmum I've seen a 6 month old "little man' in tight jeans, waistcoat, tweed cap, with a scarf fgs. Poor little boy.

squoosh · 21/06/2016 12:13

A bit fancy dress like I'll grant you but unless it was woven from nettles I'm sure he was fine.

JerryFerry · 21/06/2016 12:38

Yes I loathe lttle man, wee man. Ugh. When I see or hear it I immediately imagine a mini man swaddled, yuck.

I also loathe the suits and ties for toddlers and little boys, and the twlk of children having boyfriends or girlfriends. Tacky tacky

SaveSomeSpendSome · 21/06/2016 12:44

A friend of mine calls her 3 year old young man more than she calls him by his name!

Another friend calls her daughter little lady or little madam.

I just call my daughter by her proper name.

mygorgeousmilo · 21/06/2016 12:51

YANBU I can't stand it. Babies dressed as adults is my other major pet peeve!

houseeveryweekend · 21/06/2016 14:43

I have to dress my son in suits honestly if you saw him youd understand. He looks ridiculous in baby clothes. He has the face of an old man. He has a tweed suit and he looks amazing in it. He loves wearing it too!

dolkapots · 21/06/2016 15:07

house you do realize that we now need to see a picture of this little man baby who must be dressed in suits? Grin

jellybeans · 21/06/2016 15:09

I don't like it either. Along with people that say my sexy man about their baby or child.

dolkapots · 21/06/2016 15:10

Also slightly OT but how do you know when your baby loves wearing something? I met a woman once in hospital who had a baby that loved wearing open toed sandals apparently. None of my babies ever expressed joy at any of their handknitted by me clothes [DM sadface]

alltouchedout · 21/06/2016 15:10

Doesn't bother me. I only really get bothered when I hear people describe babies and children as 'sexy' or similar (the first time I heard it I literally gaped at the speaker). Where I used to live it was fairly common for parents to call their daughter 'my woman' or 'little woman'.
I don't recall calling any of my sons 'little man' but I have called them so many absolutely over the top endearments that they'd probably be quite relieved if I chose to call them that instead.

Oysterbabe · 21/06/2016 15:59

I want to see the Benjamin Button baby!

EmmaWoodlouse · 21/06/2016 16:14

Pickle, chicken, sweetpea....

I must have skim read because I thought I saw "chickpea" in that list at first, and now I almost want another baby (not really, existing kids are in their late teens) so I can call it chickpea!

Pinkheart5915 · 21/06/2016 16:57

I don't understand the babies dressed as adults what does that even mean?
Baby Ds wore trousers, White tshirt, braces, and baby bow tie to my wedding & a friends. Sometimes he wears shirts that match DH.
The clothes I put him in aren't made of nettles and his comfy so I just don't understand it, are we just really ment to put them in baby grows forever Confused

squoosh · 21/06/2016 16:57

What about adults dressed as babies?

That's way odder.

iwuddarryl · 21/06/2016 17:40

A toddler in a suit looks creepy.
It makes me think of Cage in Pet Sametary.

Creepy and sad.

Adults dressed as babies.

I think some men look like overgrown toddlers when they wear shorts.

It's the combination of the shorts worn with short socks and a baggy tshirt that shows their beergut stomachs. Shock

They waddle like toddlers.

They just need a dummy to complete the look.
