To want to reach into my head and scratch the shit out of my nose and throat

I know hay fever is a very minor health problem, but today has been CONSTANTLY itching, sneezing, streamy eyes and scratchy throat. Is today particularly bad or is hay fever plus PMT just an especially grumpy combination?!!

I have just washed my face with a nice scratchy wet flannel (weirdo). Felt good though.

I take fenofexidine and nasonex. They are only available on prescription, but have helped me tremendously.

Star8181 · 19/06/2016 20:31

OP, I'm so glad you have mentioned the itchy scalp and soft palate. When chatting with fellow hay fever sufferers at work they give me such odd looks when I tell them this. I get such a sore throat with hayfever!

Babymamamama · 19/06/2016 20:33

I can recommend my current fave combo; pirinase up the nose, Benadryl twice daily tablet and sodium chromolgate eye drops. Woe betide me I forget any part of that combination as my symptoms will come on double fast. The pollen is unbelievable this season.

SatansLittleHelper2 · 19/06/2016 20:36

Ooohhh, my ds does the clicking a lot but doesnt really get sneezey, more throat scratchy and clicky. What's the.best medication for clickers ??

ElleBellyBeeblebrox · 19/06/2016 20:37

I have never known how to describe the scratchy sore throat thing before, it's grim. What makes it worse some days than others?!

Older members of my family reassure me that once you hit your fifties you actually grow out of hayfever. I really hope that is the case although no help right now.

ScarletOverkill · 19/06/2016 20:40

Sorry Baby but my DM is in her 60s and still suffers each year

3amClub · 19/06/2016 20:42

Stupidly did the gardening today, it's really bad. Sore, itchy throat & mouth and inside of my ribs itch 😁 Can't breathe either. Excellent!

ElleBellyBeeblebrox · 19/06/2016 20:43

Probably a throat spray Satan? Or maybe piriton.

Hayfever is so grim and made grimmer as people who don't get it bad have no idea, including my old GP who looked at me like I was nuts when I said the worst symptom was the itchy roof of mouth. It's noise to dread it isn't just me. I also seem to be bad regardless of actual pollen count

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 19/06/2016 21:28

itchy scalp and soft palate
I get ulcers from scratching with my tongue in my sleep

sneepy · 19/06/2016 21:40

OMFG people stop whining and take some antihistamine! Hot squash is going to do fuck all. Piriton, Benadryl, Claritin, beconase... You can get them over the counter and they are vastly more effective than a hot drink. Honestly, if there's one thing that winds me up it's people snorfling and saying "oooh isn't the pollen bad today" whilst refusing to do anything about it.

ScarletOverkill · 19/06/2016 21:47

Some of us do take them sneepy but they aren't 100% effective Hmm

tametempo · 19/06/2016 21:47

Shock sneepy I imagine most other people on this thread are like me and are having these symptoms despite taking medication.

PourTheWine · 19/06/2016 21:58

This is the worst year yet for hayfever - I'm preggo on top and apparently can't take anything but I've had to as it's been so bad

sneepy · 19/06/2016 22:00

If it's not working then take more or something different. I can't imagine itching like that and not taking something.

Also, antihistamines work better if you take them regularly. If you know your times and start taking one a day early in the season you can get through most of it without too much trouble.

If you've done all that and are still suffering, take a shower, put your clothes in the wash and make everyone else in your house shower and change as well.

KP86 · 19/06/2016 22:00

I've had two one a day tabs today, as well as cold and flu tonight.

Some days I end up with phenergan and then have to fight falling asleep all day.

Just take a tablet. Super helpful, thanks.

Doilooklikeatourist · 19/06/2016 22:02

Satan in my experience the best thing for the itchy soft palate , and the scratchy clicky throat is a nasal spray , I use Flixonase every day { when I remember } and it solves the problem
If you think how the nose and throat are connected , by sniffing something in your nose it goes down the throat , honestly its worth a try

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 19/06/2016 22:20

Gee thanks sneepy Hmm Yes this is me with daily antihistamines. Showering does FA.

I guess I could ask my doctor for steroids to take for the rest of my life, I hear they have no side effects. I'll ring now, I'm sure the surgery has appointments available Hmm

DoreenLethal · 19/06/2016 22:25

Aah sneepy, if only eh? Do you think we are all stupid?

coco1810 · 19/06/2016 22:37

Just watching the weather forecast..... Rain tomorrow, woohoo! DD will be so happy as it's the dreaded sports day and she's been so poorly this weekend with the dreaded hay fever too.

5madthings · 19/06/2016 22:38

Oh god the itchy mouth, so horrible. I have eczema as well and take antihistamines all year round but hayfever still crap I end up with bloodshot eyes, the itchy nose and mouth etc yes to wanting to use a bloody bottle brush or something it's awful.

I have tried nasal sprays, eye drops, always take antihistamines at a much higher dose than packet says (okayed by consultant) but still suffer.

Lol at just having a shower, do that, wash clothes and never dry mine on the line etc and do the local honey etc but still suffer.

ursuslemonade · 19/06/2016 22:45

Sneepy I've tried all sorts. Nothing except for steroid tablets make a difference however they made me feel really strange and can't take it all the time. Just had a baby and thankfully it was ok up until now so I could avoid taking anything but now it's back with a vengeance.

My Mum uses swedish bitter to rinse her ears (with a cotton bud) and she claims it helps with the itching. Never tried myself though :-)

OP I think you're wrong about hayfever being a minor thing, it has made my parent's, sister's and my life hell every single year. Mine normally starts around April and lasts till October.

3amClub · 19/06/2016 23:31

sneepy I'm breastfeeding so stuck with 'natural' remedies this year. They do sweet FA but cost £££££, very helpful.
