To wonder why so many people are misusing the word "brought" lately?

I've been on MN and other forums for about ten years now. I've never before seen SO many people write "I brought a new top..." or "I went to Tesco and brought one of their kettles." etc...instead of bought.

It's a really hard mistake to make in my opinion!

Brought....bought....totally different!

BossWitch
I dont even care if I get deleted... your superior attitude stinks.
You clearly know fuck all about dyslexia or the effects of a shit education can have on peoples use and understanding of vocabulary.
Of course you have the right to think what you want,.as I have the right to think you are ... well, no I wont say it out loud, coz that would be mean.
In your eyes all the adults in our house are fuckwits. Nice.

language skills and maths skills are completely different. Its hardly like you are.going to be tripped up by not knowing your tables on a day to day basis

Horrid to sneer. Really unpleasant behaviour.

I know we have a laugh at autocorrect sometimes (weeping bicycle monkeys, anyone?) but y'know, it's a chat board. For chat. Not for A level grammer* markers.

BossWitch "And I accept your thinking that!"

Is it because I'm dyslexic that I can't understand that sentence?Confused

Bue · 17/06/2016 11:27

bakeoffcake well yes language is fluid and does change, as it should, but I'm not sure that extends to randomly swapping in the past tense of one verb for another. Swapping 'brought' for 'bought' is surely as random as swapping it for any other verb. "I bought the sweater" could become "I swam the sweater". It makes no sense.

This also seems to be a curiously British problem. My FB friends are about half British and half American/Canadian. I see FAR more strange grammatical and spelling errors from my British friends. I'm not sure that this is an educational issue so much as an accent issue. For example, 'chest of draws'. Not an error that occurs across the pond because we have a very strong R and you can't mistake one word for the other. Rs also seem to creep into places where they shouldn't, which makes me wonder if this is partly responsible for brought/bought. I also see 'thort' a lot for 'thought' Confused Hmm Again, you'd never see this in the USA because it simply isn't possible given the accent to think there would be an R in the word.

Incorrect grammar etc only bothers me in pompous people who boast about their abilities and then get something wrong by over compensating:

Using "I" in a sentence when it should be "me" eg : He gave it to Jane and I to hold."

When someone says "me and Dan went on holiday" - it doesn't bother me and I just think that's how they speak.

Similarly someone pompous saying "N Haitch S" would bother me.

Using "myself" incorrectly by someone who prides themselves on their education - I would find it secretly amusing. However, in someone not pompous - I would just think that's how they speak.

The one I have noticed for years on MN which is used incorrectly (by some that boast about their grammar etc ) and use it every time is : discreet and discrete.

I think it can be that everyone you mix with uses a word incorrectly and it's a way of fitting in/comfortable.

Meh - I can't be arsed to worry about it.
I like to think my grammar is pretty good.
I will, from now on, be using 'kerb' correctly.
I'm sure I don't so will double check myself every time from now on!
