I sent DP to buy us bacon butties and said if there was anything else nice treat-wise to get us something (I want cake before I start the big 'don't want to look like a whale on holiday' diet tomorrow). There's been flooding here and road closures so we weren't sure the shop would be open.

This is the ensuing text conversation. DP started it.

How can people not know what a butty shop is

How big were these cakes/slices? Were they actual whole round cakes or individual ones? Posh places could easily charge £2 for an indivual cake/slice but you can get a whole large-ish cake for that money in a supermarket or cheaper bakery.

I also have never heard the term 'butty shop' (even my laptop is flummoxed as it has twice changed 'butty' to 'beauty' .

I presume it's a baker's.

Sordy for the 'butty shop' confusion! It honestly never crossed my mind that anyone wouldn't know what it is! I knew it was a northern thing but just presumed everyone would understand. You learn something new every day! A butty is just a sandwich...so it's just a sandwich shop. Where I sent DP to get the bacon butties! (And a mountain of cakes-just slices by the way!)

My phone's quite happy with 'butty' but didn't like 'sorry'! I need to rethink my priorities maybe!
