To think street parties are completely awful?

So, our road is having a street party today. The road is closed and lots of people have been up and about this morning stringing bunting from every available place and setting up their BBQs.

Anyway, I hate it. I want to spend the day with all the curtains drawn watching Netflix, drinking wine out of the bottle and eating pizza. But I can't because it's "for the children" and my DDs have been looking forward to it for weeks and most of the activities (oh yes, there's a tug of war and everything) are happening right outside our house. So I am going to have to show my face (at least for a bit), make small talk with the neighbours and pretend to be enjoying myself.

I know, I know. I'm a miserable old cow. But I can socialise properly when I want to, I promise. I just like to do it with people I actually like rather than people I just happen to live on the same road with. Every time I tell friends how I feel they just laugh and say "oh don't be silly, it sounds like great fun, you'll have a lovely time" or think I'm joking and actually I can't wait until it starts. No one understands!

I'm probably BVU aren't I?

YANBU, it sounds jaw clenchingly tiresome.

PovertyPain · 11/06/2016 10:37

I'd throw a street party if my shit head neighbours, on one side, moved out.

emotionsecho · 11/06/2016 10:38

I enjoy them but then I like where I live, my neighbours, people generally, children and socialising.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 11/06/2016 10:38

I do see where you're coming from OP and the royal shiz would get right on my tits. I'm shy/awks, so is half my family- but the other half would have a street party every day from 2-midnight if they could. Also I have a VERRRRY antisocial disease which involves possibility of shitting self at any moment

that said, I do always enjoy our street parties, although they terrify me. I find out LERDS of gossip Grin

go on OP get your karaoke face on and get out there

Oysterbabe · 11/06/2016 10:41

Yabu and a misery guts.

user7755 · 11/06/2016 10:43

I'd love to have a street party - why is everyone having street parties except for our street

NoMudNoLotus · 11/06/2016 10:44

Yes they are awful -2 mothers on our road took it upon themselves to decide the date and time of our party ( not involving anyone else ) and also conveniently arranged for the road to be blocked off between their two houses .

They haven't involved anyone else , just put flyers through doors explaining what's happening. No sense of community spirit at all.

I hope it pisses it down quite frankly.

ZippyNeedsFeeding · 11/06/2016 10:44

I loathe forced jollity and royalty in equal measure. I also live in a place with no streets, which is handy for nonsense like this. I live in Scotland so i wasn't aware of there being much of a fuss of the queen's birthday- I thought it was just a few parades and some tiresome speeches or something.

I do like community events when they are about the community, I'm not a total misery. But I do get really annoyed with the "It's for the kids" bollocks. that usually means "It's crap, but I've only got this one chance to boss the whole neighbourhood around, so toe the bloody line NOW!"

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 11/06/2016 10:46

Confused so because I don't like street parties that means I don't like people or children emotions?

OP posts:
emotionsecho · 11/06/2016 10:48

No not at all, I was just saying why I enjoy them.

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 11/06/2016 10:49

Apparently the fucking mayor is coming to visit ffs Shock

Is this STILL for the queen's birthday? That's why we aren't having one. We are in South Yorkshire - red central.

KayTee87 · 11/06/2016 10:50

This

Come to Scotland. We don't have street parties. And it's raining

I would actually like to go to a street party. Could you maybe invite a friend over to chat with while you're at it so you're not forced to make small talk with neighbours you don't know very well?

MerilwenRose · 11/06/2016 10:50

YABU, I think it sounds nice! Wish my street were doing something.

3dogsandacat · 11/06/2016 10:54

at the risk of getting my head chopped off

Yanbu
I'm thoroughly fed up with all this royal bollocks.

(even though I like and admire the Queen)

Even the Queen herself is starting to look fed up.
The whole thing seems to be never-ending.

Topsy44 · 11/06/2016 10:59

YANBU. I don't like them. Am escaping to my parents tomorrow with my DD to avoid mine!

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 11/06/2016 10:59

I like the Queen, it's just this is the 5th year in a row we're doing this fgs. Enough already.

Everyone has their Union Jack bowlers on and it hasn't even started yet.

How long can one birthday go on for?! Love a street party, think the queen ought to just let it go now though.

NoahVale · 11/06/2016 11:01

and what about prince philip, it was actually his birthday yesterday and apparently he doesnt like the fuss, really? are you sure? he is used to taking second place for her Official birthday.
its a touch of whose queen?

KathyBeale · 11/06/2016 11:01

We have a lovely street with lovely neighbours and I am still grumpy about our street party! We've had them before but this one feels a bit forced and shit. And it's on a Saturday so we have to somehow squeeze in two dancing lessons and a swimming gala (which we'll need the car for so I think we'll have to park elsewhere so we can get out of our own street!) and as my husband keeps grumbling - there are three football matches on today which he won't miss!

I have volunteered my face painting skills and we will pop out for an hour or so.

But YANBU I hate this shit patriotism. Even my Persil has got a birthday message on it. Does the queen use Persil?!

ohtheholidays · 11/06/2016 11:02

YABVU I wish our communtity would do things like that.

I'm ill and disabled now and we have 5DC having some entertainment right outside our door would be a brilliant help for me.

foursillybeans · 11/06/2016 11:02

Yep unfortunately yabu. It is about contributing to society and the local community. Street parties are great way of involving people who get less frequently contact such as older people and vunerable people and help children understand the importance of regular contact with others.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 11/06/2016 11:06

hold on

UNION JACK BOWLERS

Shock

I take it back. Stay in. Draw the curtains.

3dogsandacat · 11/06/2016 11:07

OP. Shame on you. You are the grinch of street parties.
Grin Wink

TwatbadgingCuntfuckery · 11/06/2016 11:10

The day I start celebrating with a street party is the day the royal family acknowledges my birthday.

I'm all for strengthening community bonds but do we really have to do it by celebrating someone who was born into wealth whilst many of our neighbours are reliant on food banks?
