to be confused about cinnamon?

Can somebody explain this? The cinnamon sold in supermarkets is not really cinnamon and might actually bot be good for you at all. So why is it labelled as cinnamon FFS?
I use it every day on my porridge and always thought it was a healthy thing.
Is this common knowledge that shops sell "fake" cinnamon and i've been living under a rock?
Where can i buy the real stuff? And how will I know it's the real stuff?

Every day is a school day.

Very interesting.

What annoys me most is if you buy a little glass jar of any spice, they're too small to get a teaspoon in. Why?? Why aren't the jars shorter and wider instead of tall and skinny.

BarbaraOfSeville yes yes yes me too! One of my irrational ragey things that show I need to get a grip and a life

I won't buy Schwarz stuff for this reason. Gutted that Sainsburys withdrew their own, nice fat-bottled, brand and replace it with Schwarz. Though apparently they are bringing their own stuff back this week.

Is it wrong that I'm quite excited about that? I've been holding back on restocking Blush

The cinnamon challenge is hilarious Grin

Just looked at the back of my cinnamon packets (sticks and powder) and the sticks just say from the cinnamon tree?? The powder just says cinnamon from Indonesia - is that 'real' or cassia?

Get a spice spoon - fits perfectly.
So does a coffee spoon. Smile

I LOVE cinnamon. I have 'Chinese' cinnamon sticks but the powder I hve doesn't say what type it is.

The Barts spice hats are great, open one way for a shaker type top and the other way for a flip lid that is big enough for a teaspoon.

I buy Morrisons spice/herbs as they are wider and shorter and fit in my middle shelf..but you can also get a teaspoon in if you want too. Schwartz and just a tad too tall

It is easier to overdose on on cassia - Denmark recently tried to limit the amount of cassia allowed in bakery products because of that.

FilmaWlintstone · 15/02/2017 00:55

tiggy! Ooooold thread

Still gave me major giggles though Grin

Lakeland sell a set of measuring spoons were the spoons go from tablespoon right down to a quarter of a teaspoon and they are shaped as deep, long thin ovals so perfect for getting into awkward jars with tiny necks. .

Cassia type Cinnamon has high levels of Coumarin, a substance known to cause liver damage, while Ceylon Cinnamon is the only soft and brittle Cinnamon with ultra low Coumarin levels.

Well - you live and you learn.

ineedaknittedhat · 10/02/2019 06:24

Where do you buy the decent stuff then? I like cinnamon and have it on porridge, but also have a problem with my liver, so don't want to be eating anything which will cause it problems.
