To ask for wisdom teeth removal experiences/support!

I had a wisdom tooth removal today of all 4 teeth, plus 3 other teeth at the back (2 were broken, one had an abscess under it) I got home about 3 hours ago, and I have dental phobia. I am worrying so much now I am home, and would love love love it if anyone could give me some support or stories of their own experiences with this surgery and recovery period!

I was not given much info on waking up about how the surgery went. I had a general anaesthetic in a hospital.

I got given painkillers, antibiotics and mouthwash, told to start the antib's and mouthwash 24hrs after the surgery. I can't swallow tablets at the best of times and normally get dissolvable painkillers etc. My throat is super sore from a tube being down it, I keep choking and it's so dry and hurts to swallow, even when drinking.

HOW am I meant to take the antib's?? and it was recommended not to spit so how do I do the mouthwash and will it hurt? I am terrified of getting a dry socket. Any advice greatly appreciated. I can't speak because all my face is numb so can't really call the hospital just yet and am panicking

I was up since 6am, didn't eat all day, now it is 2am the next day, how am I meant to sleep? I'm exhausted and am a wreck.

If anyone is awake right now, please come and talk to me!

Oh gosh good luck with the GP - you can't be the only one who has problems after surgery so you would think they would hand out liquid to start with Confused

Fluffyears · 08/06/2016 19:16

Use ice regularly on your face (I swelled up like a balloon) it actually feels nice. Take the strongest painkillers you can and stay upright when sleeping as apparently it helps the pain. For the first 24 hours take hit salt rinses but don't swish just put it in your mouth and hold them let it pour out without spitting. After 24 hours start gentle rinsing with salt water. Also once it feels less sore you need to gently brush over the stitches so they dissolve and come out. It took me 6 weeks to be able to eat normally I was on mash and soup and smoothies the whole time. I was violently sick and in awful pain in the 3rd day I think it was ibuprofen on an empty stomach (I can't take codeine).

Brush the stitches out?! Arghh!! My mum and DP managed to talk my GP around, went there and got a telling off as he said I should've gone to the dentist instead (even though hospital advised to go GP...), I now have liquid antibiotics!! So happy Grin

DP on his way back from asda now with yoghurt for me to eat, I am starving! Somehow I don't think yoghurt will be that filling haha, can't really eat anything else just yet though... DP went and got himself a KFC though of course Envy

I have to say, I could have warned you about that. Your GP will not go anywhere near a dental issue, especially as you're already under the care of a dentist for this. I've been there, nightmare...

Your DP got a KFC when you can't have one??? I'd be expecting mine to eat raw spinach or something, anything to make me feel better about being unable to eat!

You're probably taking metronidazole? You definitely can't drink alcohol while taking those. Just incase you were thinking of self-medicating for the pain!

Yumdoritos · 08/06/2016 21:32

I have co-amoxiclav, but I don't drink anyway. Seeing DP eat that KFC is making me want to murder him!! I had 3 small 'munch bunch' children's yoghurts and am somehow full though, so can't complain. Got a smoothie too for tomorrow.

I am new ish to this area and I have only been to this dentist once which is where they referred me to hospital for the surgery - don't even know the name or phone number of my dentist tbh! And with dental phobia I wouldn't really want to go there anywayGrin really glad the dr gave me a prescription, I hadn't even thought of the dentist til he mentioned that since I had been doing everything through the hospital so far Shock

How have you been today yum?

exWifebeginsat40 · 09/06/2016 19:31

i had my wisdom teeth out under anaesthetic at the dentists, back when they used to knock you out and just sort of hope you woke up again. it was horrible for 72 hours at which point it suddenly got much better. i was swollen for about a fortnight though.

could you maybe try using a soft handkerchief or a muslin to soak up the drool? would be kinder on your mouth than loads of loo roll.

Yumdoritos · 10/06/2016 11:20

Yesterday was the worst - had a tiny bit of pain and was very uncomfortable. Face swollen loads. Face even worse today! I have a tooth near where wisdom was taken and it's super loose. I was doing salt water rinse yesterday and honestly thought I was going to spit the tooth out, it feels like it's lifting upwards and if I gently bite I can push it back down again but it doesn't stay down for long Sad

I called my dentist and he said its normal and that I had plenty of gum left round all my teeth so after healing things should tighten up. Still terrified whenever I eat or drink or even swallow! I just woke up, been still sleeping sitting cos I am scared now that I will choke on this crazy loose tooth. Dreading doing a rinse this morning but I have to Sad

Dentist can't even check my tooth out yet because my mouth is so swollen I can barely open it at all. Thought everything was over after the surgery that I had been terrified of for so long, and now this happens and I can't stop worrying!

Have been lots less drooly though, been swallowing most of it now my throat feels better. I am flying at the end of the month though and now worried if that's too soon? Pressure from the plane and holes in gums/blood clots doesn't sound like a good combination? Or am I overthinking it Confused

Quietlygoingmad67 · 10/06/2016 23:05

Wow! What a few days you have had! If you are concerned about flying then just have a word with your dentist to put your mind at rest! Hope your face goes down soon

Lovetobeme · 10/06/2016 23:12

I had 3 wisdom teeth out + 2 next to them...so 5 in total.
I had the same types if problems after, drooling etc. I think I remember eating lots of jelly. It took a good few days for me to be able to open my mouth anything resembling normal....and the bruising and swelling was immense. But I was pretty much back to normal after 2 weeks

Senpai · 10/06/2016 23:28

I had one of those plastic syringe tubes to inject numbing gel in the holes. You're also going to need it to "flush" the holes out.

Stick with the diet schedule they give you for soft foods to hard foods. Don't use any straws.

My gums healed just fine.

Yumdoritos · 11/06/2016 08:36

Ah thanks Lovetobeme, I was worrying that I should be able to open my mouth wider by now and still can't do it properly. You have reassured me!

Had a nice sleep last night, mostly laying down at a weird angle with my head propped up rather than sitting like the last 3 nights. Woke this morning to a nasty taste though and have spat out yellowy saliva Confused

I did a salt water rinse and took more ibuprofen (my face is still MASSIVELY swollen!) and am hoping the yellow stuff is nothing serious. Google doesn't really bring anything up and my dentist is closed all weekend so can't ask. Surely can't be an infection when I am on antibiotics? It wasn't a strong yellow but was definitely coloured and tasted weird, almost like snot?

As you can tell I am not dealing with being ill so well Grin have never been poorly at all really except for coughs and colds before! I feel so stupid for taking chewing and speaking for granted before... then start imagining people with long term health conditions and wonder how they do it and feel so bad for them Sad ahh my thoughts are running away with me again..
