To glue on Beavers (Scouts!) badges

GirlOutNumbered · 07/06/2016 21:39

My son recently enrolled and has three badges I need to sew on.

Whilst I am familiar with the concept of sewing, I have never sewn anything. The thought of having to sew a badge on is making me sweat.

Could I stick them on with glue?? This is 2016, there must be a sensible solution out there??

The Scout Association sell badge glue in their online shop Wink
As others have said, if he carries on to Cubs / Scouts there are some badges that are supposed to move up onto the next uniform. And kids who take it seriously often have their old badges transferred onto a camp blanket. You can obviously buy a duplicate badge in the future if you are so inclined, although in theory only TSA leaders can buy them (otherwise kids wouldn't have to earn them....) The Colony will probably sell them to you - they cost anywhere from about 30p-75p depending on the badge.
Having said all that, bravo for the idea of sewing them on and teaching him how to do it. If he does one himself, send a note to his leader and ask them to count it towards his My Skills challenge badge or Personal Challenge!

Here is a link to the diagram of where the badges go on a Beavers uniform:

Thanks for the linke TCsMummy. This is a whole new world for me. I wasn't even in the Brownies.

Girl it was exactly the same for me. I am now a complete convert, or almost, as I still don't like camping Smile

I have ended up helping with most sessions and DS is now in Scouts!

wigangirl18 · 10/06/2016 19:39

as a girl guide i think that you should learn how to sew and teach your son that skill. It looks a lot smarter and they can be unpicked and re-sewn if needed. using wonderweb it often peels away after being washed regularly and it just looks scruffy when a badge is hanging off or flopping around.

tallulahturtle · 11/06/2016 00:12

I learnt to sew at school, out of interest how old are you. Also agree, learn and show him how too, its a life "skill"

GirlOutNumbered · 11/06/2016 21:50

I'm 40. Pretty sure that I did seeing at school, I'm just rubbish at it.

If you have a younger DC who may be in Beavers, you'll be glad if you can reuse the uniform. If you don't, the leaders will be grateful for a donation, or you can sell it.

If the scouting movement was run by women I reckon the badges would be iron on by now.

If the scouting movement was run by women, I reckon the first badge would be for learning how to sew badges on. Easiest solution, really. Grin

Kingsizecrochetblanket · 11/06/2016 22:13

There's a dry cleaners with a repair service near to where my cub pack is that sews them on for you for a small charge. Wink

EveryoneElsie · 11/06/2016 22:21

When I was a Brownie we had to sew on our own.

Gibble1 · 11/06/2016 22:22

I have to say that I have used badge glue on DS's cub uniform but the bloody things fell off in the wash so now I pin them and sew them. BUT you only need to catch the border of the badge so it's far easier.
My friend has a new way of sewing her DS's badges on which I can't get my head around. She sews from the back of the fabric and catches the border of the badge. When it's turned in, the badge pulls tight and looks immaculate. She has described it many a time to me but I can't fathom it. I think there is a vid on youtube though.
I now have DS's cub jumper with sewn and stuck on badges which he would like me to transfer to his camp blanket (along with several of my own badges to be sewn onto my blanket). I also have blooody hundreds of badges to be sewn onto his scout shirt. Grumpy Mum!

BaboonBottom · 11/06/2016 22:54

I've tried glue & wonder web neither worked. The only thing that worked is sewing. Sorry!
One of the mums at beavers does it for a donation to the group.

rookiemere · 12/06/2016 21:42

Sewed three of the little sods on today. The badge glue doesn't last forever. Sadly I find it hard to see the needle head these days so it takes longer than it used to.

crunchymommy · 12/06/2016 22:01

Just been doing this to DDs uniform tonight. I echo what others say badge glue is pretty useless. I'm a bad sewer but if I use the same coloured thread as the badge borders then you can't even see how bad my bodge job isGrin

GirlOutNumbered · 12/06/2016 22:20

It's Beavers tomorrow, but he's going to have to go badgeless! I will try the sewing tomorrow after work! I will definitely be watching youtube.

Oh lord glue 'em on. I had 3 dc at Beavers and Scouts. I was always sewing badges.

Then they all went through a growing phase and suddenly grew out of their shirts and I spent one weekend unpicking about 50 badges and re-sewing them on to the new shirts. Aargh!

This stuff is pretty good. I bought some the other day to mend a top. Wish I'd known about it during my badge sewing years.

BaboonBottom · 13/06/2016 09:22

Its trying to work out which badge goes where, and then they change the shape of them so you don't know its the same type .... arrrrrrhhhhhh

JoffreyBaratheon · 13/06/2016 09:25

My husband has been sewing since he was a teenager, and is a very neat hand-sewer. He painstakingly sewed on all my son's scout badges. Then son got bored of scouts.

In retrospect - total waste of time. We should have glued them on. Fabric glue might work.

RobotLover68 · 13/06/2016 09:49

I've been trying to teach my Cub Scouts (8-10 year olds) to sew on badges for their skills challenge - it certainly is a challenge - so good luck with that Grin

If you are going down the wondaweb route don't press straight onto the badge as they badges melt! I've had a few parents bring back melted messes to buy a new badge

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 13/06/2016 09:57

I love sewing but only by machine! I have now found a good way of getting them done is to have a little bag with a small sewing kit and take it with me when waiting for them at Swimming, dance etc and pull it out and do them then. I can usually clear 3-4 in each session and it would be otherwise wasted time.

MummyMaisy · 13/06/2016 11:20

I get a professional to do my kids' badges Grin I'm terrible at sewing. I did look at the official badge glue, but they don't recommend it for uniforms.

Loctite is fantastic, use it all the time - www.beavers-uniform.co.uk/beavers-uniform/badge-glue-beavers
