I have witnessed some truly spectacular examples of bad driving in the last week.

The worst by far was the car on the outside lane of the M3 who realised he was going to miss the junction he needed. So he stopped. In the outside lane. Then indicated left. Everyone had to stop to prevent a mass pile up so he very calmly just turned left and drove across all the lanes of traffic and then across the chevrons onto the slip road (where cars were still exiting at high speed). I truly hope that was caught on camera and he's hammered with points on his license!

On the same journey on a normal road (with a 60mph speed limit) a police car came up behind with blue lights on. All the cars on my side were slowing and pulling over (but not stopping) except the car in front which panicked at the last minute and just slammed the brakes on in the middle of the lane which caused the police car to have to drive on the other side of the road and everyone else to have to stop as well.

Some people shouldn't have a driving license!

Very strange nighttime experance on a duel carriageway.

White headlights coming towards me as in facing me in the lane I'm using

Kungfupandaworksout16 · 06/06/2016 16:29

The other week I was going straight down a road a car pulled out from a side street, and darted out in front of me and headed straight into a no entry street!
And just yesterday in the car with the hubby on a 40 road, we are in the left lane, the other car in the right lane - they indicate left and within a second of indication dart in front of us. Luckily it was clear behind us so he slammed on. She then dashed back into the right lane at the traffic lights causing nearly another crash with another car. My husband shouted at her " what the hell are you playing at?" And her genius response was " I indicated didn't i? What the fucks your problem? " Hmm oh that's alright then, you nearly make two cars crash but it's ok because you indicated before nearly causing the crash!

chelle792 · 06/06/2016 16:33

About an hour ago i was driving along the road. There was a car indicating left as if he was pulled in. Weirdly it was opposite a t junction and I thought it was a stupid place to stop.

The car behind him went to go around him and the stationary car turned right into the t junction, nearly pulling into the overtaking car in the process.

World's craziest indicating

crazywriter · 06/06/2016 16:39

We have roadworks on the motorway where we live. I often see people try to drive in the original markings through some sections, which means they go between two of the roadwork marked lanes. Saw a string of traffic do it as I was overtaking a girl. She decided to follow what the others were doing, trying to cut into my Lane, right where I was beside her. She soon got a horn to warn her.

On Friday I almost had someone do that somewhere else. 3 lanes of traffic through lights over a very busy crossroad. I was in the middle and stuck to my middle Lane. The guy to the left of me decided he wanted to be in my Lane without an indication. Just started moving to force me to either slow down or cut up the guy to the right of me. He sounded his horn but was forced to put his own brakes on. The guy to the right of me was laughing (don't know whether at me or the idiot).

Today had another guy in the roadworks by me. He started swerving into my Lane without and indicator. Sounded my horn to alert him to the fact the I was inches behind him, and slowed down thinking he was switching lanes. He went back into his own Lane so I could overtake. Threw abuse at me for his damn mistake.

akkakk · 06/06/2016 16:47

around us - car drivers who are idiots - and those who are sensible
motorcyclists - ditto
cyclists - ditto
van & lorry drivers - ditto
about the only bunch who are generally sensible are horse riders...

pretty simple match to the same levels of stupidity and carelessness across humanity generally :)

PuppyMonkey · 06/06/2016 17:17

The woman turning right out of the petrol station onto a main road, who looked left but didn't bother with looking right and thus crashed into me as I was driving down the main road. She was quite a rubbish driver. Fortunately, she didn't kill me or DD. Sad

InTheSandPit · 06/06/2016 17:56

scary teacher same in the UK. Driving tests suspended in WW2. My Gran never took a test. And only refunded her licence last year on health grounds.

Frankly, the driving out here is scary in so many ways, I can't begin to start. But blatant disregard for lane markings - resulting in 5 lanes of traffic where 3 are marked, over and under taking, tail gating (sp???), lack of seat belt and child seat usage, mobiles while driving...........
I don't think I've come across a road that doesn't have a central reservation, and kerbs are about 12 inches high, to try and keep everyone separate.

Mycatsabastard · 06/06/2016 17:58

Some of these are horrifying! It's no wonder so many people are killed on our roads every year. 9/10 I think it's impatience or lack of concentration. The rest of the time it's sheer stupidity.

My dp was nearly killed by a car pulling out onto the road when he was on hit motorbike two years ago. He was left in the high dependency unit after major surgery to stop massive internal bleeding. Two years off work recovering from my his many injuries. The woman driving the car 'didn't see him'. She couldn't be sent on a driver awareness course as she'd already been on two. She got 6 points on her license and a fine of less then £400.

I passed my test only last year Blush and the day before my test I was approaching a junction. I had slowed down a little bit too early on my approach, but it was a closed junction so would need to stop anyway. Good job, as a boy racer turned right into my road, but turned too early, going far too fast (at least 40mph) and was in my lane for several metres before he corrected and got into the left hand lane. If I hadn't slowed down early (and as it was still had to do an emergency stop) he would have hit me, head on. As you can guess that did WONDERS for my confidence...! Still passed though, 2 minors, in your face boy racer!!!

FindoGask · 06/06/2016 18:04

On the school run recently I saw a guy in a black BMW watching music videos on his phone, which was in a holder attached to the windscreen, whilst navigating a busy roundabout.

Laiste · 06/06/2016 18:05

Worse recently? Not dangerous, but sooooo thoughtless.

Approaching a T junction near here yesterday i pulled slowly up behind a white mini which was at the junction stop lines, poised to turn right. Except there was no driver in it and the drivers door was wide open.

I think 'emergency happening nearby?' and look around - only to see a woman come out of her house about 4 doors down, walk to the car, grinning, waving her phone at me, and get back behind the wheel.

So she'd left home and driven off without her phone. Then remembered it - but rather than re-park the car like a normal person she'd just abandoned it at the junction and gone back in the house ShockShock

Evenstar · 06/06/2016 18:06

Yesterday I was in the right hand lane at a roundabout, both lanes could be used to go straight on, someone from the left hand lane cut across straight in front of me to turn right. I had to slam my brakes on and we missed colliding by inches, luckily the large camper van behind me managed to stop too, but my pug was flung out of her car seat Angry. She was fine, but I was very shaken.

MatildaTheCat · 06/06/2016 18:06
  1. Bus driver reading a novel whilst waiting for the traffic lights.
  1. Range Rover which had clearly been in an accident since the bonnet lid was wide open as the driver drove up a busy A road. With a baby sitting next to him on the front seat. Shock
MangoBiscuit · 06/06/2016 18:10

M3 IS dreadful! That's where some idiot nearly ploughed through my Micra, my DD1 and I. There's a bit near Winchester way where it drops from 3 lanes to 2, so the fast lane merges into the middle. I was in the middle, and I checked my mirrors before the lanes merged, to see if there was anyone close enough they were likely to nip in in front of me. Only one grey car, quite a long way off. I don't know if he saw me and decided to accelerate like crazy to try to over take, or if he was already speeding and hadn't noticed the lane change, but he came screaming down my right side, over the hatchings, headed straight for my front end. I swerved (nice lorry driver gave me room) and braked hard and he missed me by an inch or two. He swerved back and forth a bit in front of me, then sped off again. DD1 learnt some lovely new words that day and got to tell Grandma all about Mummy beeping the car at the naughty man! Blush

Mavisblewitt · 06/06/2016 18:11

Coming off the A303 to join the a36, two utter cockwombles in a red ford Ka PARKED on the edge of the slip road, no hazards on, they were looking at a map.😡
Luckily there wasn't anything on my right so swerved back out on the main road to miss them.
Reckon they crapped themselves when I blasted my horn at them, two heads shot up like meerkats 😉
I do around 30,000 miles a year I see some awful things because of twatty behaviour 😔

LordEmsworth · 06/06/2016 18:16

I was driving home tonight, narrow-ish road, NSL, doing 60.

Round a corner and someone's overtaking a cyclist, on my side of the road, coming straight at me. She couldn't pull in without killing the cyclist, and there were cars behind her so she couldn't brake - I had to brake to about 20 sharpish (no-one behind me fortunately) so she could overtake and pull in without hitting me or the cyclist. Impatient cow - if she'd waited to get round the corner the road is straight so you can see what's coming...

snowgirl29 · 06/06/2016 18:17

A car tried to overtake the bus I was on as we approached a four junction roundabout and almost caused an almighty pileup.
Unfortunately for the 'in a hurry driver' there was a police car coming the opposite way and witnessed the whole thing, swung round and went to have words with him. Grin

I see it regularly now. People not indicating then getting annoyed when you're not telepathic enough to guess correctly which way they were going to go.

Oh and recently a great big lorry at the side of our bus (in a bus lane) getting way to close for comfort and the lorry driver looking completely perplexed as to why the bus driver kept tooting his you're too fucking close horn.

MrsHathaway · 06/06/2016 18:21

About ten days ago, so bad I stopped and rang 999.

Coming into our village there's a steep descent then an incline through mature trees. It's effectively a tunnel and very dark past dusk. Road is dual carriageway (70mph).

As I came over the brow of the previous hill, I thought I could see hazard lights on in the inside lane, so I pulled out into the outside lane. Ahead of me I saw cars reacting rather more slowly, swerving into the outside lane with only a couple of car lengths to go.

Tsk, I thought. Read the damn road.

It became clear that a car had broken down in the inside lane and was waiting with hazards on (but no other lights). When I got about a car length away from it I realised the driver had his door wide open, and the passenger was standing beside it, chatting to him. Both wearing all black clothing.

I had to swerve to avoid hitting him.

Anyway so I was pulling off very shortly afterwards so pulled off, parked up and rang 999 who were extremely interested and sent a car on blues and twos. The accident/breakdown hadn't been reported to them at all until I rang.

frankie001 · 06/06/2016 18:34

Today I saw someone approach a roundabout in the incoming traffic lane. Twat.

frankie001 · 06/06/2016 18:35

Oh and the woman eating noodles with chopsticks as she was driving! That was many years ago now.

RaspberryOverload · 06/06/2016 18:49

My commute includes a motorway stretch and a section of dual carridgeway.

I've seen numerous low level incidents. One time, I was driving on the dual carridgeway in the outer lane of 2, when an AA van pulled out in front of me so close I had to brake sharply to avoid hitting it, being mere inches away. I was lucky there was a reasonable gap behind me at that point.

So I emailed the AA, giving date, time and road number. I got a reply a few days later, they had identified the driver and "upheld my complaint". Good. As I wrote in the email, it had to be bad for me to be pushed to write to them.

From observing other drivers, I believe a sizeable number now appear to have the belief that putting an indicator on gives them the right of way to go ahead with their manoeuvre, regardless of whether it's actually safe to do so.

sashh · 06/06/2016 18:58

Not recent but visiting my parents, there is a junction, you come down a hill and there is a turn with two lanes joining the main road, one going right and one going left, then a after a bit of a traffic island space for cars turning right from the main road.
I went in to the left lane, another car went in to the right, we had respective indicators on and were waiting for a car to pass when it turned up the road between us.

We both watched him and then looked at each other.

I once saw a driver come round Piccadilly and on down regent St, for those of you not familiar with central London this is a wide street, three lanes going the opposite way.

As he got to Jermyn St a Taxi almost hit him and he started blowing his horn and shouting. I didn't have time to wait to see what the taxi driver said.

Myusernameismyusername · 06/06/2016 18:58

I was driving on a 60mph dual carriageway yesterday at 50 when I came around a reasonably blind bend on the inside lane and found a cyclist, poodling along in full Lycra gear. I do not know how I did not hit him, as there was a car directly next to me and I couldn't move over or brake without the car behind me too close slamming into me.
It was that moment of hope and prayer. Maybe it was my bad driving but it was the last Road I ever thought a cyclist would be using and very unprepared

The worst one I have had is a girl realising at the last Moment this is her junction on the M1 and just driving across the chevrons at me, there was a bloody lorry next to me so couldn't move. I had to slam my foot on the accelerator and hope she got in behind me and not clip me

RaeSkywalker · 06/06/2016 19:08

Oh another- on the M6 heading north, traffic crawling through roadworks. We're in the middle lane. Signs are telling us to stay in lane. Out of nowhere, an estate car to our left pulling a caravan tries to nose into gap between us and the car in front. DH makes "what are you doing?!" gesture at other driver. We both assume he hasn't seen us and will stay in lane.

Caravan man goes apopleptic with rage, continues revving his engine to move forward. He's suddenly bright red in the face, window down, screaming obscenities, making gestures at DH... Seems that he knew we were there and thinks we should've let him bully his way in. There was no need- the lanes were all moving at the same speed, there was no blockage, we were nowhere near a junction.

DH was determined not to let the arsehole in but I asked him to in the end, because caravan man had 2 young children in the back of his car who were witnessing all of this.

Great guy, was caravan man... Angry. I wish I'd taken his registration number because he really was a danger to himself and others.

EsmeraldaEllaBella · 06/06/2016 19:37

Selene please don't use the word blind as an insult

Always see boy racers turning into small road from main road at speed crossing the lines into my side, makes me nervous approaching the junction
