Hi our neighbors next door have a dog fair enough however the fence has a massive hole in it 4 weeks ago dd 3 was playing in the garden and the dog jumped up a poked it's head and paws through and nearly made it over it to our garden was barking dd was so frightened she wet herself she was screaming never see her so scared

Every time we even step foot outside it comes to the hole pokes it's head a paws through and barks wildly dos to frightened to go in the garden now

So last week dh said enough is enough asked nicely if they
Can fix there fence tbh the whole lot is rotton and could come down at any time they said yes

Then Monday's just gone said it would be fixed by the end of the week just gone out today to hand the washing up more barking however they have simply tacked a old trelance to the hole witch means the bloody dog is still baking at my daughter or who ever goes into our garden but cannot poke it's head right though

I going to give them till next week as the trelance maybe temporary however it still means dd won't go into the garden

What can be done if they don't sort it it may seem trivial to dog people but my dd should be able to play in her own garden with out being barked at for the duration she is out there

Have
A photo this was taken today as soon as I open my door to hang the washing out it started

^^What is a trelance?

It's like a valance only made of treesSmile

Two poles in the ground with some black polythene fived to them in front of the gap so the dog can't see in should sort it? And something like Cotoneaster that will provide screening could be planted.
I think they're responsible for securing their dog but have no responsibility to cater for a fear of that dog. Which is difficult for you.

IamaBluebird · 06/06/2016 00:46

They don't seem to have secured the dog that well though. If you own a large dog I think the fence needs to be a strong one that will ensure he doesn't get out. If the Op was sure this was the case then she could use some of the screening and planting ideas.

ColdTeaAgain · 06/06/2016 01:08

Just not fair that your child can't enjoy their own garden because of neighbours dog. It sounds pretty unlikely they will agree to sorting out decent fencing given the poor attempt at fixing the hole. I think I would cut my losses and invest in really solid fencing and go round and explain how the barking and jumping up has frightened her too much now and that you will be erecting a new fence so that she can play in the garden without feeling threatened.
Your child's safety is far more important that what neighbours think.

Build your own fence and teach your daughter not to be scared? Too simple? You're a parent, that's your job!

free2getin · 14/09/2016 17:54

my neighbours own there property and i rent mine the fence to the left of our house is there fence and is old unprotected and brittle due to a very windy spell the wany lap of one of the panels collapsed leaveing a hole approx 2 feet in diametre there solution to this was to put up a bamboo style roll sheeting on bank holiday this year my dog chased a cat into there garden and killed it i retrieved the dog from there garden and expressed my appologies i replaced the broken panel with a new one i have spoken with them regarding the condition of all the other panels but they will not commit to answering if they intend to replace them after this incident they have reported it to the police (who as yet have not been near or by) and the our landlords its now two weeks since this happened
we had a visit from our landlords yesterday and told us that they can only act on there propertys and as i had not told them that i have a dog i am in breach of my tennency and therefore have given me 28 days to re-home the dog or my tennency will be terminated
im a law abiding citizan and except that i have made a mistake in not telling them they told me to appeal against the decision stating any measures to make sure this will not happen again to which i will be asking to erect another fence close to the existing one and sonar alarms around the garden to deter the cats from entering also putting arris rail strips on the top edge of the fence to hinder there balance again to deter
despite agreeing that these steps would be sufficient i was then told that they have never and will not alter there decision once made the only exceptions being a dog for the blind or to help with dissabilitys which is not in this case my dog is a very loveing dog loves attention and would not hurt anyone however with one exception and thats cats i know my appeal is futile as i have breached my tennency rules i am however seeking citizans advice as im outraged that the homeowner has no resposibility they took down the original wire fenceing to erect there one had they not have done this i would not be faced with loseing my home

Rumpelstiltskin143 · 14/09/2016 18:13

Did you tell your landlord you had a dog? No, then he has every right to tell you to get rid of it.

You're losing your home because of your actions, don't blame someone else.

dalmatianmad · 14/09/2016 18:25

Op I recently had a similar situation, next doors dog bashed a hole in the fence and dalmatian went to see what was happening and their dog attacked dalmatian dog.....
We had a big fall out, they promised to buy a new fence (it's the side that's their responsibility) but after a couple of weeks they came up with excuse after excuse.
My lovely dad came round with a brand new fence and put it all up against the old one. I'm sure it looks really shit from their garden but I don't bloody care! My dogs and dc are safe Smile

GiddyOnZackHunt · 14/09/2016 18:26

You need to seperate the two issues.

  1. You are in breach of your tenancy for having a dog. You are being evicted for this.
  2. Your dog killed a cat. No action is being taken against you for that.
YelloDraw · 14/09/2016 18:27

Just put a fence up on your side.

LazySusan11 · 14/09/2016 18:28

Get one of those bamboo screens and put it up against the fence where the hole is. Dog probably isn't being aggressive however if you dd is frightened that's not fair on her.

justilou · 14/09/2016 18:32

Perhaps you should contact the local council. There are noise abatement laws, etc. Also recommend a bark-busting collar that sprays citronella oil in front of dog's face when it barks. They have a good success rate.

I would' personally give my child a water pistol.

Here's a link to smells dogs don't like, I would spray the fence with vinegar in the hope it would keep the dog away from that area until something could be planted/built as a screen.

This is old now.

No they don't, they just cause the dog anxiety, stress and fear. They're also likely to be activated by other noises around the dog. It's a vile thing to do to a dog. Far better to focus on training your dog properly rather than using aversive and cruel gimmicks.

Blackfellpony · 14/09/2016 19:04

Water pistol is a stupid idea.

  1. If the dog is barking due to being fearful or territorial your scaring it or annoying it making it more likely to bark.
  2. If it's playing your interacting with it making it more likely to bark.

Any trainer will tell you, ignore negative behaviour to stop it.

Put a fence up, ignore dog. Teach child dog barking isn't end of the world as it can't get through fence.

AnnieOnnieMouse · 14/09/2016 19:30

There should be someone in the local council to deal with dog noise. We had a neighbour with an Alsatian that would bark for ages and jump up alarmingly whenever anyone went past. I don't know who reported it, or what was said or done, but the barking stopped. Worth a try!

MonsterINTHECupboard · 14/09/2016 19:37

If you have a dog you are legally obliged to make sure it stays in your garden. Therefore you need good fences. If it's their fence they need to repair it. You should not be having to put up your own fences within your boundary. Why should you?
