Humour me here please.
My original ring has disintegrated back has split and one ( v small diamond) has fallen out and is now lost.
Now I never thought I was a jewellery type person ...but... Now I find I'm noticing other people's rings and feeling envious.
So, if I were to put my original ring plus a few bits of trivial hideous 80s stuff together what would I need to come up with to have nice piece of bling???

Definitely look into preowened. I run a jewellers and it doesnt always mean "worn before" as many of our items are stock from jewellers we have bought out, or gifts that have never been out of the box. Therea no vat of manufacturing costs involved so can be up to 70% cheaper than new. New jewellery has such a big mark up and engagement rings are the worst!

(if youre in South Wales, give me a shout and i can help!)

I have learnt the hard way that it should not be not be more than you can comfortably afford, or it will simply be a burden, not the daily pleasure it is meant to be. My engagement ring from my first husband was eyewateringly expensive, and also hideous (think heavy, yellow gold setting). It was big, brash and show-offy, and also (something we don't always think about) dangerous to wear around. The ring from my second husband is worth less (about £60,000), but the difference is that I chose it, it's very me, and I love wearing it every day. Also, unless you care very much about where it comes from (Cartier, Tiffany etc) - do what I did and buy a loose stone direct from a diamond dealer and have it set yourself. You'll get a lot more bling for your money!

There is no "right"amount. It's what you can afford.

Mine was £7000 which would would be too little for some people but too much for others but it's what DP could afford.

My engagement ring is an heirloom piece left by my grandmother. She had some amazing jewellery so we decided not to spend money on yet another ring. It's worth about 4K. I did get a diamond set wedding band to go with it but since we had saved on the engagement ring we didn't mind spending a bit more on the wedding ring.

I like to think my granny would approve of my husband and it's a very special thing to me to wear her ring. It's not even the most valuable of what she had but I love it.

I don't buy jewellery as an investment as such. I never pay over the odds, that's for sure. I nearly always buy secondhand now, or in America where prices are so much lower.
In the case of the ring I bought on eBay (paid £600 and valued at £6000) after I picked it up from being valued I took it straight to another jeweller, who buys, and they offered £1500 first time without any haggling. If I could have nearly trebled my money in three days, I decided to hang on to it and enjoy wearing it in the meantime. I'm sure if I eBay it one day I could realistically price it around £2500-3000. That's better than any interest in the bank!!
I have eBay'd a lot of jewellery over the years and have made myself a nice little earner on the side out of it.

Mine was 2.5 K Blush

My wedding ring (we have just had made) cost 1.7 K Blush I am a magpie.

My first wedding ring cost 1K (I had it made) I got it valued recently and it was weighed by 2 places and worth £170.

There is not always a lot of value in second hand jewellery (if you are selling) but you get a lot for your money if buying.
