DS is 13 weeks, 8 corrected. In scbu for 17 days. Tube fed with breast milk but my supply dwindled by discharge time. He has severe silent reflux and mild cmpi. He hates lying on on his back and hates his crib. He is on rantidine gaviscon and neocate. He was settling for first part of evening in pram carry cot this has now stopped. He will only sleep upright on us, he startles very easily to and is not napping well. I have a wrap I use during day he sometimeS naps well. Myself and DH take it in shifts in the lounge for sleep, we have 2 bed bungalow and dd is becoming disturbed by DS. We have plans to do loft extension next year.,I start my day around 3/4 as I won't sleep on sofa with him. However obviously I think he is becoming used to sleeping on us. DH has a stag do coming up and work nights away and I don't know how I will manage with sleep especially as he won't no tolerate his pram cot for a few hours. His crib and cot are raised , he won't lie on his tummy. He won't even settle on a pillow upright in our bed! I have resigned myself to him sleeping on me in bed! But this is obviously not safe. We are consultant privately for his reflux and he is due to move to omprezole . Anyone any ideas?

Sleepyhead pod?

The pod can go on your bed up high with your and Dh pillows out the way. It will cushion around him to stop startling awake, and he will be safe as you or Dh can't roll on him

Also swaddle him to reduce him startling awake

Just to say omeprazole worked wonders with my 29 weekers reflux too. That and a hypoallergenic formula without dairy in it. Worth trying Nutrimagen or Neocate for formula if you haven't already and the omeprazole hasn't shown an improvement within a week or so... Good luck and Flowers for the sleep. It WILL get better.

Amby nest baby hammock. Cradles them so no flatness, it's like being held. Mine has got me through 3 kids, none of whom slept in their cots...

Are you wrapping him for sleep, to stop the startle reflex?

MerryInthechelseahotel · 03/06/2016 22:03

Carobel upset my fd 's tummy too but she went onto another thickner and that was much better. Can't remember which one now, sorry, but don't give up on thickners because of the carobel.
It's such a difficult time but it's not forever..hold onto that thought! Once he starts on solids you will notice a huge difference hopefully.

Onthedowns · 03/06/2016 23:16

Thanks will look st other thickners where do you get them from? I do wrap him it he kicks! It's a nightmare

Sleepyhead could help, makes them feel snuggled.

Not much help now but a friend who had a baby with bad reflux was recommended to wean early and it made a massive difference.

Onthedowns · 04/06/2016 18:49

Thanks are there cheaper versions of sleepyhead? He's only 13 weeks but already very long so I think he will be out of first one soon

I know you said he wouldn't lie on the bed, but might he do it if he was on his side, with his head in the crook of your elbow? This was the only way I could get any sleep with my silent refluxer.

MerryInthechelseahotel · 04/06/2016 19:02

Just can't remember the name of the second thickener that worked really well. We got it from the paediatric dietician. The bottle used to look and smell so unappetising with the Neocate and thickener but it was magic! Hang on in there and start solids as early as you can.

Artandco · 04/06/2016 19:30

I think the main sleepyhead is the only one approved for overnight sleeping compared to cheaper ones. They are £100 but should last until 9-12 months as the bottom opens out. Worth it imo if it helps the next 6+ months. Can use even longer if they like the close contained feeling
( as an idea my then 3 year old laid in a friends one and still looked comfy but legs obviously long. He could have happily napped in it if on another soft surface like bed/ carpet floor)

Onthedowns · 04/06/2016 21:25

Thank you maybe his time in scbu has affected him also !

Flowers for you op, it's awful when nothing you try makes a difference. Poddle pods can be good and don't cost too much. It worked great for ds1 with reflux but DS2 seems worse and Is not a fan so it's not a guarantee.

This is more spending, but we have started seeing a cranial osteopath who can apparently help with reflux, my ds doesn't sound as bad as yours though but am mentioning in case.

Sleep is getting a bit better here but for a while he would also only sleep on his front on me and I felt hugely guilty and worried about it not being safe. The thing is though, you've GOT to sleep, and at least if you plan it you can make it as safe as possible, in bed.

Good luck and hope your poor ds starts to get some relief soon, and all of you some rest.

stopgap · 04/06/2016 23:37

My first had atrocious silent reflux which lasted until he was close to a year. During that time, he went in his Uppa Baby stroller, slightly propped, and I had to vigorously rock him back and forth for thirty minutes until he fell asleep. Have you tried rocking the stroller?

And screw the "bad habits" train of thought. You need to do whatever it takes to survive silent reflux. (To add a tale of one that may give you hope: my first son is now close to five, and is a brilliant sleeper, and has been since 15 months, when he finally outgrew his digestive woes.)

Onthedowns · 05/06/2016 04:10

Thanks everyone it's pretty tough and people unless you have a baby like it don't get it! My dd was pretty mild compared! It's really affecting my health and DH too plus the negativity on my dd. It's frustrating going through everything and nothing working!

Artandco · 05/06/2016 07:13

I don't think the poddle pods are approved for overnight sleeping ( due to the fabrics not breathable enough I think)

Diddlydokey · 05/06/2016 08:43

I would do exactly what stop has suggested. It may also be helpful, purely anecdotally, that ds always cried before every sleep - car, pram, cot, on me... so I'd try pushing the pram and allow for a period of crying but wait to see if it passes.

Ashpan26 · 07/06/2016 21:50
