I have just turned 40. Where am I supposed to be buying my clothes?

I like Monsoon but can't really afford it. And I like Marks and Spencers but apparently I am ten years too young for that? And I like NEXT but it is getting harder to find things that suit me there.

Can anyone help?

You buy your clothes from any shop you want to buy them from regardless of your age.

Think of all the slebs who are over 40, you don't see them suddenly sporting a twin set and pearls.

I am over 40, I shop in Primark, Debenhams, Next, H&M, New look.

ghostyslovesheep · 02/06/2016 22:09

Next, Zara new look river island marks etc but to be honest just bloody buy what YOU like and stop being a big pansyoh and avoid joe Browns and the shite stuff unless you want to look like a stereotype!

troubleinstore · 02/06/2016 22:09

There is not an age to any shop. They all have clothes that suit different people for different occasions. I don't understand this 'age' logic. You can dress well and badly from any shop whether it be Top Shop or M&S. It all depends on what and how you wear it.
If you like it, it looks good then buy it, wherever it's from.
Go in every shop, try everything on that you like and decide from there. Don't be dictated to by somebody telling you what you should or shouldn't do.

Shenanagins · 02/06/2016 22:12

Just shop wherever you see things that suit your style.

I'm in my 40s and shop in river island, top shop, oasis, mango, Zara, m and s, h and m, gap and so on.

Just because your 40 doesn't mean that you've given up on stylish clothes!

troubleinstore · 02/06/2016 22:12

oh and I'm pushing on 50 and wear Zara, Mango, Top Shop, H&M, Tu (Saino's), F&F (Tesco), Mint Velvet, New Look, Boden and Primark

228agreenend · 02/06/2016 22:13

I'm in my 40s and look at M and S, Fat face, Next, Boden I've got a couple,of nice pieces from Dorothy Perkins recently.

Buy clothes that suit your shape and colours that suit your skin tone, and you'll be fine, wherever your shop,

monkeywithacowface · 02/06/2016 22:18

River Island, Top Shop, H&M, Mango, Warehouse, Next (mostly shoes from next)

DailyFaily · 02/06/2016 22:27

I'm 42 and my go to shops are Oasis, Fat Face, White Stuff, Next, Warehouse. Phase eight often have nice stuff and I also have a bit of a thing for French Connection at the moment

Pedestriana · 02/06/2016 22:29

I'm nearer 50 than 40. I shop all over (when I can afford it). Most frequently end up in H&M or New Look. I am fortunate that we have a lot of good charity shops locally so I can pick up Next or Monsoon stuff for a fraction of the cost. There's also a fair bit of Phase Eight, LK Bennett and Boden too.

Misnomer · 02/06/2016 22:38

Gap, Zara, H&M, the occasional bargain in TK Maxx, sometimes White Stuff (though there colour palette is not always great for me), occasionally Seasalt but I don't like their current season.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 02/06/2016 22:42

Monsoon is a headache made in polyester and viscose!

Have bought this year from Fat Face (love their boyfriend shirts), Next, Seasalt (a coat), Laura Ashley (have been a fan since my teens, though the quality isn't quite what it used to be) and M&S (jeans. Lots of skinny jeans), Landsend (good basics)

Pipbin · 02/06/2016 22:43

I'm 41 and I'm afraid it's Fat Face, White Stuff and Sea Salt for me.
But then I am rather dumpy and don't much care.

SlowComfortableShrew · 02/06/2016 22:45

Where ever you damn well want...

Chlorella · 02/06/2016 22:49

M&S for jeans, love Phase Eight. Boden occasionally, but sale prices only. Sainsburys has some good stuff for work. I have big boobs so Pepperberry also. I also shop at John Lewis - brands like Mint Velvet, White Stuff, Fat Face etc. I'm early 40s.

Judydreamsofhorses · 02/06/2016 22:55

I'm 43 and buy loads in Topshop. Otherwise Whistles, Warehouse, Zara.

Plumpysoft · 02/06/2016 22:57

I agree with Saigon - don't change!!

MidnightLullaby · 02/06/2016 22:57

Fat Face, White Stuff, Mantaray, Rocha John Rocha, New Look and DP for skater dresses, Namaste, make stuff myself...

Only wear DM boots/shoes, Birkenstocks, and ballet flats.

Still wear hair braids and have piercings.

I'm 41.

MidnightLullaby · 02/06/2016 23:00

Chlorella, I don't have big boobs, but I am an F cup and I find it really difficult to find clothes that fit my boobs. I've just had a look at Pepperberry after reading your post. What joy!!

purplebud · 02/06/2016 23:04

H and m, gap, John rocha. Also I seem to like next - but only from charity shops. TK max. I love the colours of fat face and sea salt but the cut really doesn't suit me. Laura Ashley sometimes.

Notcontent · 02/06/2016 23:04

My number one rule is to buy less, better quality and try to stick to natural fibres (subject to some exception),

I get things from Uniqlo, Whistles (look out for sales), the odd item from Boden and J Crew. Used to like Cos and Zara, but not so much now, although still look there.

I never shop at M&S, Next or Monsoon!

belleandsnowwhite · 02/06/2016 23:06

My mum is 58 and shops at miss selfidges, River Island, Top Shop etc.. I don't shop in them anymore though. I am not as daring as my mum and I am a bit boring.
I am 35 and like Mango, dp, h&m, basics from Matalan.

oobedobe · 02/06/2016 23:06

I'm overseas so different shops than UK, but I am also turning 40 soon and I am happy that I have a few reliable decent quality 'fav shops' to rely on. Also good to have ones where you know their sizing fits your shape.

I like J Crew Factory, Loft, RW&Co.

lulatalula · 02/06/2016 23:08

I've always loved buying clothes. In my 20's and 30's spent tons in Top Shop and Warehouse. Now i'm 48 most of my stuff comes from Zara, &other stories, Cos with a bit of Whistles thrown in. Just buy what suits you and enjoy it.

Krampus · 02/06/2016 23:10

If it suits you, you like it and you can afford it then buy it.

I am 47 and shop anywhere.

jellybeans · 02/06/2016 23:23

I go to Matalan, M&S and Sainsburys mostly. Occasionally Littlewoods if I am very busy.
