To hate the stupid rabbits

So MIL and FIL have gone on holiday this week. DP said we would look after the rabbits while they were away without asking me.

The rabbits are house rabbits and currently in a hutch in the kitchen stinking our whole house out Angry

DP said because I am on annual leave this week I can clean out and look after them....
I went to change the water this morning and one of the fuckers bit me Angry

So I am leaving them and DP can clean them out when he gets home. The whole of the downstairs of my house STINKS... DP says we are a team and I should pull my weight when it comes to helping family!

Please please tell me I am not mad and unreasonable... Sad

You're a team but he's clearly the manager and you're just a player.

TheCraicDealer · 02/06/2016 19:56

I wouldn't do a button more. Tell him he made the commitment, not you, and that if he wants to look like Mr Generous to his family he can put the graft in. You didn't take annual leave to look after bloody rabbits!

If you don't make it clear you'll not stand for it he'll keep doing it. In twenty years time you'll be taking leave from work to take your MIL to the podiatrist or some shit because he said you would.

Vodka my rabbit had a stuffed friend. He would regularly try to shag it and drag it into his cage. He was castrated but had a soft spot for Betty Bunny Grin

VodkaValiumLattePlease · 02/06/2016 20:03

Ha they try to shag each other, it's a bit awks really...

TroysMammy · 02/06/2016 20:07

When we had visitors my xh used to let Rolf out of his cage and let him have his wicked way with Betty Bunny. It went a bit far when he allowed Rolf to show his party piece to my parents Shock

HairsprayBabe · 02/06/2016 20:09

This is the hutch normally they only go in it in the night and are free range in the day

OP, I'm not surprised the rabbits are unhappy sharing that small cage - and to be honest, it baffles me that their owners were happy to leave them, knowing they'd be stuck in there - they don't have nearly enough room, poor things.

Bearcatt · 02/06/2016 20:39

I looked after my friends rabbit once .
His cage was in our large back living /dining room. He didn't smell at all.
(The cat was very interested in him but they were kept apart).
When he was let loose though he was jumping on & off sofa & then back of sofa & decided to hump the back of my headShock
Friend told me after that he used to do that to her DD.
He has long departed this world now & friend never had another rabbit so never had to do it again.

NewYearNewToads · 02/06/2016 20:42

Shock That cage is tiny. Poor rabbits.

HairsprayBabe · 02/06/2016 20:49

I didnt ask for judgement on how they are kept... they are not my rabbits... and the bitey one is always grumpy even when free range. There has been no change in their normal tempers.

DP has cleaned them out now and agreed it wasnt fair to ask me to clean them when he had offered to look after them.

They will be going home at the end of the week and will be free range again, I dont think half a week in a small hutch will scar them too much. Thanks for all your replies Smile

Their cage is way too small, that's why they're being arsey. Rabbits are more like puppies tbh. They need masses of space.

vodka my late house rabbit used to hop along the window sill and watch people.

harshbuttrue1980 · 02/06/2016 20:51

That hutch is disgustingly small for two rabbits!!! I know it isn't your fault as they're not your rabbits, but please say something to the owners. Even if they are only in it at night, it is FAR too small. You (rather, the owners) can get closed in runs attaching to the cage. Rabbits need to run and jump, not have a tiny patch of space all on one level. There are no toys, nowhere to burrow and hide, no space to run and jump... no wonder they're biting!! :-(

nuttymango · 02/06/2016 20:56

That's smaller than the cage that we have one guinea pig in! I know it's not your fault OP but tell your PILs. Our GP is free range all day and the cage door is open all night so she can come in and out of her cage at will.

InUseAlready · 02/06/2016 21:11

Rabbits are cunts. We had one once. It was awful.

HairsprayBabe · 02/06/2016 21:11

They have one each at home and they only go in from 10pm to 6am FiL is retired so they can hop about hapily all day, but i will mention it to them... and next year when they go on holiday they can check them into the bunny hotel!

We have a rabbit and she is obsessed with my feet, even more so when I'm not wearing socks, she'll happily jump around my feet and sit there whilst I rub her with them Blush

Nothing wrong with adults keeping rabbits.

BigbyWolf · 02/06/2016 21:16

InUseAlready Grin

ratspeaker · 02/06/2016 21:18

Another one saying the cage is far too small. A rabbit needs to be able to stand on its hind legs, have at least 3 hops space and a place to hide.
So no wonder they are grumpy confined in such a small space it must be torture for them.

ratspeaker · 02/06/2016 21:26

Oh and I think its very unfair of your DH to expect you to care for a pet that you dont have an affinity with.
Would it not have made more sense for the rabbits to have been left in their own home running free in one room and your DH to go along to feed, water and clean them

HairsprayBabe · 02/06/2016 21:32

Probably rat but this was all decided before i knew anything about it
they were dropped round on wednesday morning when i wasnt in and we cant easily get them back to PiLs as we dont drive

SuburbanRhonda · 02/06/2016 21:38

I've taken my cat to the vet in a taxi once (in her carrier). Mind you, I did have to argue the toss with the taxi driver, who wanted me to put her in the boot Shock

glueandstick · 02/06/2016 21:39

They might be territorial about their cage and bitey if you go into their space. Would explain you being bitten when you put water in

I'll also say that the cage is far too small.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 02/06/2016 21:40

Rabbits are cunts

Now we love our rabbits dearly but that ^ is a pretty accurate description Grin

DaveCamoron · 02/06/2016 21:42

Rabbits will chew through absolutely anything so I'm a bit Shock that someone suggested letting them loose in a room at PIL's and just going back to feed them.
