To be a bit shocked at mummy pig (lighthearted)

Looking after DGD yesterday and watching Peppa Pig.

Peppa, being bossy and telling George what he shouldn't do to the computer pressed all the keys and made the computer go a bit funny. Immediately, mummy pig called to daddy pig asking him if he could come and mend the computer for her, which he did by turning it off and on.

What the hell. Why does a competent woman like mummy pig need daddy pig to rescue her from computer hell, especially given that daddy pig generally comes across as a bit of a buffoon.

Although, this is lighthearted, I must admit I was rather shocked to see this in a modern children's television programme. Surely Peppa pig wasn't made that long ago.

I can jolly ds1 (3) out of a whingefest by telling him he's being Peppa. Or Norman Price.

The porcine --sandwich- brat is so vile to her brother we use her as an example of how not to treat baby ds2.

Ben & Holly is ace. Paw Patrol is shit but a little less obviously misogynistic. Bing is OK if you can stand Flop and everything being a fucking Bing Thing Hmm Blaze and the monster machines is brilliant and goes through all the proper scientific language although yet again most of the characters are male.

Bluewombler2k · 02/06/2016 19:57

Watch it enough and pretty much every comment above has a point!! I got the hump with the one where Mummy Pig was trying to work too. On Youtube there is a dubbed-over one where Daddy Pig is left with the kids and bodges up hanging a picture. It's worth watching just for the "shitballs" moment when he makes a hole in the wall. I think if that everytime I start getting annoyed by it.

GeoffreysGoat · 02/06/2016 20:00

ready I'm a reasonably intelligent adult forced to inhabit these worlds on an incessant basis. I can't just abandon a toddler and a baby and lock myself away in silence to read Worthy Tomes. So I'm keeping my brain in practice for when that becomes possible again by analysing what little fodder I'm able to get my grubby neurons on.

camelfinger · 02/06/2016 20:04

In the fire engine one Daddy Pig is patronisingly dismissive of the Mummies Fire Service. Then the Daddies are stereotypically shit at barbecuing. Daddy Pig makes a slightly passive aggressive comment to Miss Rabbit at the end about her "kindly flooding the garden". Well put out your own barbecue fire then!! LOVE Ben and Holly. We have actually watched an episode when the DCs are in bed.

Bluewombler2k · 02/06/2016 20:07

I'm weaning dd 6mo onto Doctors. She does tend to get excited when the theme tune starts and always gets excited when Mrs Tembe is on...and Al for some reason

Buggers · 02/06/2016 20:10

I detest peppa pig, George is the worst though! That cry whenever he doesn't get his own wayAngry. love Ben & holly though jelly floooodGrin

Janecc · 02/06/2016 20:55

And the password to get in a Peppas playhouse is "daddy's big tummy" or some such. Daddy pig gets it worse off overall. He also can't read maps. He is a structural engineer at work though. So he's got plenty of failings.

Busybuzzybumblebee · 02/06/2016 21:09

I have a strange love hate relationship with Peppa pig, on the one had she is an appalling know it all with a bad attitude but I also love it as reminds me off baby ds and how he was mesmerised by it and it makes me all nostalgic. He loves blazes, I have seen every blood episode a million times. Try to get him back on Ben and Holly which is the best

readytorage · 02/06/2016 21:53

geoffrey Hahaha I get the feeling you really hate the little porker.

To be perfectly honest, what annoys me more than anything is that I never came up with the idea for a little piggy who, like her friends, has an alliterative name. The creators banked £47 million for selling their stake. Baaaaaaah I wish it were me

I loathe peppa pig, the whole programme but her in particular. It's banned in this house.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 02/06/2016 22:16

waxweasel I'm glad we aren't the only ones who shout insults at children's TV characters. For some reason we had Bing on when our DD was napping the other day and I- in a moment of irrational hate- said "fuck you Flop!" And my husband quick as a flash said "why are you so small and weird, Flop?"

We realised there and then that we needed to turn the TV off as we are both losing our shit Grin

AliDran · 02/06/2016 22:19

My twins are going through a huge peppa phase at the moment, and I cannot stand it. I keep craving bacon sandwiches at the moment as well which I blaming on the bloody pig. (I might also fantasise which cut of pork could be made out of each pig. George is perfect for chipolatas...)

Ezzie29 · 02/06/2016 22:35

I don't mind Peppa Pig too much but I do get annoyed by the stereotypes - yes it's just a kid's show but kids are impressionable and the gender stereotyping thought process starts at a young age.
I prefer Ben and Holly but I get irritated by THE REALLY SHOUTY LADY who does the voice for Nanny Plum and also Miss Rabbit on PP.

reallywittyname · 02/06/2016 22:39

Ahhhh but you see Grampy Rabbit makes it all worth while.
"I miss cheese"
"It's better than real, it's pretend!"

Smooshface · 03/06/2016 08:41

Grampy Rabbit is excellent, as is Grandpa Pig (when I wrote excellent then it was his voice in my head 'the pirate's handwriting is excellent').

We have been watching Shaun the Sheep (it is cbbc but not for any particular reason I can see), which Peppa obsessed 2 year old will ask for when we have made it clear nanny doesn't have peppa pig in her kitchen. She also likes twirliwoos, and will tolerate Charlie and Lola and Horrible Histories (i guess for the songs)

NoCapes · 03/06/2016 08:49

The thing that annoys me most about Peppa Pig is -
Peppa Pig
Danny Dog
Rebecca, Richard, Rosie & Robbie Rabbit
Candy Cat
Zoe Zebra
Pedro Pony
Emily Elephant
Wendy Wolf
All fine
Then there's -
Suzy Sheep
George Pig
Chloe Pig
And fucking Baby Alexander Pig
Why!?!?!
If the whole thing about the names is alliteration at least be fucking consistent!! Ooo it enrages me!!

2nds · 03/06/2016 08:54

Miss Rabbit has too many jobs, she works in every job imaginable how is this possible?

I agree with Peppa being a spoilt brat, there has been a few episodes that has displayed that. What bugs me the most about her is that she often just thinks of her little brother as a pain in the arse.

Neither Granny or Grandpa pig could work a computer in the episode where Mummy pig gets a new computer, why not? My mum Skypes when she manages to not smash up whatever device she has, and my fiancé's dad is 81 and is more tech minded than I am.

Another gripe I have with this show is they are constantly feeding the little ducks cake and bread. Why can't they show Peppa and co giving the ducks food that has much better nutritional value to them? Kids learn from these shows and they copy what happens.

I disagree with Ben and Holly being better, Holly is a crap friend who forgets Ben's birthday and her daddy is a lazy sod.

TheCrumpettyTree · 03/06/2016 09:01

What about the Peppa Pig episode where Peppa puts her dress in the washing machine with the white washing, and dyes Daddy Pig's football shirt pink. Which he then declares he can't wear because it's pink. Wtf?

I love Ben and Holly, it's genuinely funny. Has anyone else sadly noticed that on the episode where they go into space the control room is full of post it notes with cups of tea lists.

cuntinghomicidalcardigan · 03/06/2016 09:14

Ah Crumpetty see, after an unfortunate incident where I dyed my white team shirt pink (accidental addition of red sock to the wash) then I couldn't wear it either - because the team plays in white, not pink. So I missed that as a potential reference to it being a 'girls' colour.

Agree that Ben and Holly is much better though. Love nanny plum and the wise old elf's love hate relationship Grin

NoCapes · 03/06/2016 09:30

Nanny Plum & Wise Old Elf have definitely shagged!

Janecc · 03/06/2016 09:52

But what all of these shows are showing in their unique and very basic way is that as humans we are fallible and confusing as well as being very confused. Yes Peppa is a spoilt brat, some of the fairies and elves are either plonkers or know it alls and yes Daddy Pig gets a raw deal and is a bit pompous but they are soooo much better than some of the programming for the next age range. For example are a bunch of sickly American tween soaps like Good Luck Charlie that predominantely girls seem to go for. Yuk yuk yuk. DD was off school ill for a few days and she watched crap like this non stop. Then got bored of that kind of trash - yeh! These don't even have the great two levels of humour that make these cartoons for littlies bearable.

pigsDOfly · 03/06/2016 12:40

I remember some of the programmes my DCs used to love - older than Peppa Pig's viewing age: Danger Mouse and Avenger Penguins were two I used to really enjoy watching with them.

Some of the pre teen shows were good: Sabrina the teenage Witch was a favourite with my DDs and Sister, Sister, both good fun imo, but then you'd get the really ghastly stuff such Saved by the Bell: awful sexist rubbish.

CruCru · 03/06/2016 13:02

I hate Peppa Pig's voice. Mummy Pig always sounds irritated and condescending. I do like Daddy Pig though.
