to only do the washing up/put dishwasher on and no other cleaning on departing our holiday cottage?

Oh and empty bins?

Just having a week away in a not inexpensive cottage. Have to be out by 10 on the last day, am planning to leave nothing dirty lying around (apart from sheets, obvs) but shan't be doing any actual cleaning either.

That's not unreasonable is it?

Any reputable company would insist on a professional clean between lets. Can you imagine turning up to someone's slapdash efforts?

bibbitybobbityyhat · 01/06/2016 20:36

"I think it is common courtesy to leave it visually as you found it."

I'm not interested in common courtesy tbh. Presumably something is going on here between the 10am check out time and 4pm check in time.

Eurgh - I'd be very displeased to rent a cottage and it not be thoroughly cleaned professionally before I arrived. That's why you pay £500 for 3 nights surely?

Dishwasher should be on or emptied and bins emptied.

I strip beds (and do in hotels too)

AverysillyoldHector · 01/06/2016 20:37

If you rent a cottage out to 6 people do you expect them not to use the toilet?!

No, but I would never expect anyone to leave a toilet dirty either...

We strip the bed if requested, wash up, empty bins, a quick wipe round the work surfaces and a very quick vacuum round if it needs it.

3amEternal · 01/06/2016 20:38

It pisses me off when I rent a cottage for 2 weeks (double the price of 1 week obviously) and don't get a clean and change of linen halfway through.

Caravanoflove · 01/06/2016 20:41

Avery, it wasn't dirty (as in soiled) but seriously are you expected to do a proper bathroom clean when you've paid £2k for a week and there are cleaners included in that price? Do you clean hotel toilets?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/06/2016 20:42

Lynda you strip beds in hotels??

Motherinlawsdung · 01/06/2016 20:47

Wow Lynda I've never heard of stripping beds in hotels! But in holiday lets I clean every surface, put dishwasher on, mop hard floors, strip beds, put out rubbish and hoover carpets. Bit illogical really.

Pyjamaface · 01/06/2016 20:47

I'll strip the beds, dishwasher on with the last of the dishes, wipe the kitchen and empty the bins.

I'll hoover round the night before as well.

Any more than that and it's not a bloody holiday

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/06/2016 20:48

Sorry bibbity, to actually answer your question:

I think different places have different "rules" and the owner or letting agent needs to let you know what the expectations are. Super cheap let probably means a bit more work on leaving day. Expensive one probably means they have professional cleaners and you can leave with minimal cleaning and tidying.

One thing is for sure. If someone lends you their place for free, you leave it SPIC AND SPAN with all laundry done and no nasties in the fridge. Along with a nice bottle of wine on the side in the kitchen with a nice note I'm talking to you, friends of DMum

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/06/2016 20:49

I strip beds and put them in the bath along with dirty towels. Dishwasher on and empty bins. I've never been anywhere that asked for more than that.

Hulababy · 01/06/2016 20:53

We leave the dishwasher running generally - if check out is 10am, then we don't have time to have breakfast and then do a full cycle, and I don't feel the need to wash by hand that day - never been an issue despite years or renting cottages and villas.

I only strip beds if it is in the welcome pack to do so.

We empty indoor bins and recycling and take them to an outdoor bin.

We tidy in that we pick things up and leave things straight.

I wipe round the bathroom and kitchen with a cleaning wipe normally, but don't use products or anything. I wouldn't leave anything looking dirty but its in no way proper clean - just a wipe round.

I don't usually vacuum or mop. Though, if we are staying somewhere a bit more 'messy' such as near the beach or in muddy fields we would sweep the floors near doors/hard floors - we don't wear shoes inside anyway so it's not likely that it goes further. Obviously if we dropped/spilled something we would vacuum/mop it if necessary. We would do that during the week though, as it happened.

I expect cottages and villas to be properly clean and tidy when we turn up. I expect that someone linked to the property itself has been in and gone round it. No reputable renter would leave it to the precious guests surely? Isn't that way check in (about 10am) and out (about 3pm) times leave a good chunk of time in the middle - so everything can be given a good clean, bedding changed, etc?

RatOnnaStick · 01/06/2016 20:54

I've never done more than wipe round after breakfast, empty bins, dishwasher on/washing up and no disgusting mess anywhere.

HemanOrSheRa · 01/06/2016 20:57

No No No! We pay our Housekeeper over £100 per changeover to clean and replace linen! Please don't get yourselves all stressed out by cleaning at the end of your holiday.

Roonerspism · 01/06/2016 20:58

If you are out by 10am them there are cleaners in before the next arrivals at 4pm

It's expensive to rent for a week and I would expect proper cleaners in.

I generally set the dishwasher, wipe the kitchen surfaces, leave the oven clean, brief wipe of fridge. Quick Hoover of main living room. I leave the loo in an acceptable state.

I do not strip the beds. I do not feel clean anything. I'm on holiday!!!!

LyndaNotLinda · 01/06/2016 21:08

I do strip beds in hotels, yes! But only because I was a chambermaid when I was 15 at a massive Hilton hotel chain and I know how stressful it is trying to turn round 40 rooms in a few hours. I don't expect most people to do that but I know how grateful I'd have been if just one of my rooms had done it. And yes, I do know it's a bit bonkers :)

I don't clean holiday lets - I just don't leave them as a pit. They're tidy, but they need cleaning.

Spudlet · 01/06/2016 21:09

Leave the dishwasher running, empty the fridge and bins and leave the place tidy and not totally minging (no muddy foot / paw prints, loo visually clean, no hair in the sink etc). Thats it. I'd strip the bed if requested but have never stayed in a place requiring this. Never had any problems.

I'm on holiday, I'm not scrubbing floors - or toilets!

ohtheholidays · 01/06/2016 21:11

We stick the dishwasher on,wipe the sides over, empty all the bins, empty the dishwasher and put the bits away.
Strip all the beds and stick the bedding all together and we put all the towels together as well.

My DH will have stuck the hoover round the day before anyways.

HippyPottyMouth · 01/06/2016 21:12

We came home from a cottage yesterday. We emptied bins, washed up and left the kitchen and bathroom clean but not deep-cleaned. I wanted to hoover but we ran out of time.

987flowers · 01/06/2016 21:14

I never strip beds!!! I make sure it's tidy, clean surfaces and sweep the hall/lounge and leave the dishwasher on.

TrashPanda · 01/06/2016 21:15

At the ones I book for check out is 10am and check in is 3pm to allow housekeepers to go in and do a full clean. We don't ask that the beds are stripped, but we do ask that bins are emptied and dishes clean/dishwasher at least on. I would expect to leave it in an alright state, no massive skids in the toilet, wiped down worktops etc but I wouldn't be dusting or hoovering.

blueskyinmarch · 01/06/2016 21:20

I have a holiday let. Some people leave it tidy with bins emptied and dishwasher on etc. Some leave it in a bit of a state. Professional cleaners go in after every let and clean it all. You will be fine with what you are doing.

JeffVaderneedsatray · 01/06/2016 21:21

When we depart holiday cottages I make sure kitchen surfaces are vaguely clean, I strip beds if asked and I will run the dishwasher after breakfast.
If we have moved anything I put them back and if there is any sand anywhere I will hoover or sweep (but I'd do that as we went through the week).
I don't clean bathrooms (unless the loo needs attention - but again that would happen as we needed to do it)
It is stressful enough to get DH, DS and DD and myself out of a cottage by 10am without the stress of cleaning especially when I've paid for it to be cleaned as part of the fee!

MrsKoala · 01/06/2016 21:23

All the cottages i have stayed in the cleaning is part of the cost. But i do the normal things that are requested like bins, towels and bedding stripped and in the laundry, kitchen wiped over and washing up done.

The only time i cleaned the place top to bottom was when DH got chicken pox while we were there and the lovely owners drove him to the doctors and got medicine and supplies for us and let us stay on one extra night and leave late (only a couple of hours before the next people arrived) so on the departure morning dh went to die quietly nap in the car while i cleaned the place.

expatinscotland · 01/06/2016 21:30

Jesus wept! Strip beds, hoover and dust?! It's a holiday let, they're not doing you a favour letting you stay there for free. I wouldn't leave it a state but sure wouldn't do any cleaning aside from a wipe down of surfaces. It's why I prefer Premier Inn/Travelodge - cheaper and they don't expect you to clean (and you get fresh towels and bedding every day).
