Bagged dog poo hanging from various branches in parks.

I keep seeing this and think AIBU to wonder why someone would bother to clean up after their dog and then tie the plastic bagged poo to a tree or fence. Wouldn't it be better to let the dog mess in an overgrown area where it can biodegrade? Surely leaving it in a bag means it won't breakdown. Am I missing something?

Apparently some people do this as a form of dirty protest - as in 'I'll pick it up because it's the law and I'm liable to be fined if I don't, but I don't agree with it because it's only poo and will eventually wash away or be eaten by flies, and as such I'm going to make it harder for the authorities to clean it up by bagging it and tying it to a tree'

Not sure if there is any truth to that, but I can imagine some of the more precious owners thinking that way.

Somewhereundertheduvet · 31/05/2016 11:13

I hate seeing dog poo with a passion, even though I have a dog.
Like MardAsSnails I have a special carrier (Dicky Bag) clipped to my belt to put the bagged poo in and it's the best thing I ever bought. I have even been known carry other people's poo bags on a walk as it is so convenient. (Polishes haloHalo )

What makes me really cross though is dog shit left on a country path.
Even if you haven't got a bag it would take 2 seconds to flick it into the hedge out of the way, but no. A big pile of stinking plop is left there right in the centre for all and sundry to tread in. Who does this? Angry

onlyjustme · 31/05/2016 11:41

I saw an answer to this once...
I saw some kids who were picking up the bags of dog poo left on the path (someone MAY have been planning to pick it up later...)
They picked up the bags and threw them in to the tree.
GRIM.
As I jogged past I said "I bet your parents are SO proud..."
(Then hoped that I would be able to outrun them or that their aim wasn't great if they decided to react to my comment!!!!)

This would work if the bags were bio-degradable.

Horses eating bags of dog shit? Only accidentally or if they were absolutely starving - no self-respecting horse will willingly eat plastic...

And yes to the picking up the bags on the way home - my dogs all tend to shit miles away from the bins on the hottest days, and flies already follow me around, they don't need any more encouragement.

So it's ok for other path/park users to look at and walk past a festering fly attracter?

There is a beautiful stretch of tow path near me that I jog along in the evenings, this is unfortunately being spoiled by a prolific spread of shitbag trees.........I so wish I could catch someone doing it and bollock them, it's a filthy habit.

I once had to frogmarch a man back to the steaming pile of shite that his dog had just deposited on the try line of the rugby pitch that I was about to play a game on. It literally did not occur to him that some of the thirty plus players warming up a short distance away from him might be a bit miffed at the prospect of getting covered in a faberge dogs egg.

Yukduck · 31/05/2016 12:11

Flower here I am! I only did it once when we were out walking in the forest with the dog, and there were no poo bins that we could find anywhere.

I hung the offending stinky poo on our car's tow bar and completely forgot about it, and we drove about 10 miles home that day! No one tooted or flashed us. They must have had a laugh though as it was clearly a bag of swinging dog poo in a bright yellow nappy sack!

Zaphodsotherhead · 31/05/2016 12:17

captain - sorry, I don't walk paths or parks, only deepest countryside!

MyNewBearTotoro · 31/05/2016 12:21

I hate this! See lots of it out and about and you can tell most of the bags have been there a while so no-one's planning on collecting the bags on their way back. And that's a flimsy excuse anyway. Dog-owners need to be prepared to carry their dig's bagged poo until they reach a bin or get home and should bring a backpack/ larger carrier bag/ anorak with deep pockets to carry it in as necessary.

I think the whole point is that the bags are not biodegradeable, and therefore make more mess hanging on a tree than a dog poo which eventually disappears (even though both are revolting) - although as the bags bio-degraded they would just deposit the old shit on the ground below

Yukduck · 31/05/2016 12:29

Somewhere Thanks for the name of the smellproof bag (Dickie Bag). I will grab one next time I am at the pet shop. I do carry plenty of scented nappy sacks but I must admit I hate them swinging from my hands during the actual walk if you can't find a poo bin.

If it clips to my handbag or belt it would be so much better walking back from the walk through town and past shops or cafe's where people are eating/drinking/food shopping.

Akire · 31/05/2016 12:33

It is gross surely you bag up poo then put in bigger bag/rucksack lined bag u til you reach a bin. I imagine not plesant but that's part of having a pet.

Somewhereundertheduvet · 31/05/2016 13:11

Yukduck

I've never actually seen Dickybags in a pet shop but they do sell them online.
They are quite pricey but I've had mine for over 2 years and it's still going strong and it's sooo useful Smile

Somewhere many thanks. I had a look at the website and I am going to buy one. Looks like I can keep the poo bags (empty) in the Dickie until I need them too.

I would have bought one years ago had I known about them. Can't understand why they are not promoted in pet supply shops.

EveryoneElsie · 31/05/2016 13:38

As a lifelong dog and cat owner, the only right thing to do is bag it and carry it home.

Anything else is just being a fucking nuisance.

Somewhereundertheduvet · 31/05/2016 13:39

Yukduck

Happy to help.
Yes the unused plastic bags can be neatly stored in the lid out of the way, I can fit over 10 in there.
Just make sure you get the right size Dicky for your dog/dogs though. I bought one when we had a puppy not realising that the amount of poo would increase so dramatically. Sometimes it's a bit of a tight squeeze getting that 4th bag of poo in. Grin

I think there should be much more dog poo bins. There aren't enough.

SirChenjin · 31/05/2016 13:43

There are loads of multi purpose bins round our way that you can deposit poos in - and usually a dog poo on the ground approximately 3 feet away Angry

hmcAsWas · 31/05/2016 13:47

I walk in the New Forest. There are no bins of any description in the car parks. I regularly walk around Fritham and there are dog poo bags adorning one particular tree trunk v. close to the car park. I have some sympathy with that - its like the dog owners are saying to the New Forest verderers and wardens (of which a couple at least are based in Fritham) - 'get a frigging dog poo bin and we'll gladly use it'
