Internships raffled and auctioned at independent schools give unfair advantage to privileged students

I think so.

Life and career-changing internships are regularly auctioned and sold for raffles by Old boys and Old girls at top independent schools giving students an unfair advantage. I know it's normal..... but that doesn't make it right.

I thought the charities (like schools, political parties etc) were ruffling/auctioning internships.

Though they might also provide the ones they auction. Is that the confusion?

NewLife4Me · 30/05/2016 19:25

Isn't this what they pay for? An unfair advantage.
These come in all shapes and forms and in all walks of life.
It happens in teaching, market stalls, card shops, supermarkets, just that I have experienced.
There's always somebody who has a mate who can get you a job, it's just at different levels.

I used to work for a company where one or two internships a year were auctioned at charity events. That's one or two out of, I should think, about 200/ 300 that were given out each year. Each intern was judged independently according to how well they performed on the job, and repeat internships (which could lead to jobs) offered accordingly. The children whose internships were 'bought' for them very seldom had the drive to do well in the industry. Potentially, everything had always come too easy to them. But which ever charity the money had gone to benefited enormously.

It's worth speaking up if you think it's unfair. Worked here.

Yup I've seen internships auctioned at industry charity events. Crass in the extreme and just so wrong.
