to think you don't need to list your school achievements on your CV

If you're over the age of 21?

I'm proof reading a CV for a friend and we're having a spirited discussion about how much of their school career/achievements to include. She thinks that, even though she's a professional in her 40s, she should include the 6th form scholarship, the senior chemistry prize and the 5th form physics prize. I think they have no place on a CV and would have very little place even on a UCAS form.

AIBU to think we should put professional qualification, degree and A levels down and leave off the rest? Or am I being a curmudgeonly bugger and should I let my friend celebrate her achievements?

Every job I've applied for in the last six months has asked for an application form, not a CV. And every application form has asked for every qualification since GSCE level (or O level in my case). I've found that my CV is pretty much redundant.

I'd say that it depends on the circumstances. If you have won a best in school type award on leaving I think it's worthwhile, especially if you went to a fancy school. People who went to eton etc will list whether they were a "scholar" - as far as I'm aware that's pretty normal.

Somebody from Eton was complaining today that forcing people to put their school on their cv might lead to discrimination against people from independent schools - so presumably it depends on the job!

Very true merry. I was thinking of old Etonians who end up in professions that are anything but discriminatory against private schools (the bar/the city etc).

You're definitely right, OP. Professional qualifications and any recent achievements only. I'm in recruitment and would be more than likely to disregard your friend's CV with all that on sorry!
