to ask if its worth ever buying scratchcards?

I know any form of gambling is a mugs game, but I have stopped buying lottery tickets and now and again buy a scratchcard
I have literally never won even a tiny amount
Does anyone know someone who has won any kind of significant amount on these , or is it never worth buying a scratchcard?

I agree with hopelessly - spending money on a faint chance regularly is a bad habit to get into.

I have never lost on one but the most I've won is £16. I never rebut with the winnings, one shot only.

Beepbopboop · 29/05/2016 14:15

I have never bought a scratch card, only a few lottery tickets. I personally think they are a waste of money. And I have horrendous luck.
However, someone I know won £1m on a scratch card. You have to be in it to win it.

Ellybellyboo · 29/05/2016 14:19

I won £100 on one that came in a Christmas cracker - friend made her own crackers and put scratch cards in them. Out of 16 I was the only one who won.

DH buys a couple once in a blue moon, and usually wins back what he's spent so the odd £1 and £2 win

notamummy10 · 29/05/2016 14:25

The most I've won on a scratch-card is £50! I buy them every so often, just like I play the Euromillions when there's a massive rollover.

But if I don't win, then that's it until next time!

Janefromdowntheroad · 29/05/2016 14:26

God MN is so fucking sneery at the moment.

I'm sure she means a little hobby as something he looks forward to if he has a little change in his pocket. Which you clearly knew but decided to do the whole wide eyed 'do people really live like that' shit.

Most I've won is £50. I buy a couple a week and usually win.

NeedACleverNN · 29/05/2016 14:27

I can see how people get themselves addicted to them.

It's the thrill of the win.

Neighbour two doors away won £20,000 on a scratchcard several years ago. That's the only person I know personally who has won a significant amount on the Lotto or scratchcards.

FuckOffJeffrey · 29/05/2016 14:34

I occasionally buy scratch cards and I usually win a couple of pounds or sometimes £5. I once won £20 but never had a big win.

I only buy them if they catch my eye or DH will sometimes bring one in for me. I think gambling is fine if you are sensible with it and don't spend huge amounts. I look at a scratch cards the same way as I would look at a tombola or a raffle.

I was at university doing a statistics class when the lottery started. My statistics tutor said the best way to play the lottery was to put the pound you'd have spent on a ticket (or scratchcard) in a jar every week and then at the end of the year, you'd have £52 to go and treat yourself to something nice!

I do the online ones every now and then, will normally put about £40 in that I'm happy to lose, once managed to get to the daily limit which was about 75 IIRC, so theoretically spent £375 in one sitting, but walked away with around £200 at the end.

MardAsSnails · 29/05/2016 15:42

I usually spend about £25 on scratch cards once a year when I'm in the UK. If I win anything, it goes straight back on. The £25 is what I'm prepared to lose.

I had a run once where that £25 won me the same back. I put £15 on the lottery and £10 on scratch cards. Won £20. Anyway, I left to come back home and left the 'winnings' with my dad for weekly lottery tickets with a
Max of £10 a week. It lasted 11 weeks with a few winnings here and there. Alas though, eventually I had feck all left

AppleSetsSail · 29/05/2016 15:46

Their expected value is negative.

topcat2014 · 29/05/2016 15:51

When the lottery started, it was once a week - to prevent problem gambling. Scratchards were ruled out at the start as they were deemed problematic, in that you could just keep buying.

The banker always wins.

Although I confess I am a charity trustee, and our small charity gets grants from the lottery - so have a little bit of divided loyalty.

nippiesweetie · 29/05/2016 16:34

I had a spell of buying scratchcards and later switched to online games. I won small amounts at roughly the rate the odds indicated. I could afford it but began to think it was a bit silly and a waste of money and stopped.

It did bother me that there are no reports of prize distribution for these games. With the lottery tickets you can see how much has been won for each level of prize but with these other games you have to take it on trust that a proper proportion has been paid out.

I think Camelot should be upfront about money in and money out even if more information would result in fewer people buying these cards or playing these games.

Shannyfanny · 29/05/2016 17:04

I never won anything but 50 quid on the health lottery. I don't bother Anymore with these things.

eyebrowsonfleek · 29/05/2016 17:11

My local Coop has scratch card posters that say the top 10 prizes of £1m have been claimed but inviting you to try to win a smaller prize.
I haven't seen these posters at supermarkets and other places so I wonder how many people are buying assuming that they have a shot at the big prizes.

Lndnmummy · 29/05/2016 17:12

A good friend of mine won 250k a few years ago.
